In German, we can simply build a new word out of other existing words, if we don't have it yet. Like in this case, which is a concatenation of 3 "simple" German words: Becken + Rand + Schwimmer. The Literal translation to English would be *"pooledgeswimmer"* .

Really? I don't think he's trying at all. It's not that hard: Shwaighofer. Just practice your guest's name a few times before you come on stage - seems like common courtesy. Almost makes me wonder if Jimmy is making fun of the whole "Americans can't pronounce foreign words" thing, I mean that's how bad he's messing the pronunciation up - it is not that difficult!

@@eva-w „Schwaighofer” is exactly the way Jimmy pronounced it. Because that’s how Americans say it. It is hard, especially for a foreigner. And there’s “ö” in his name so you should pronounce it as “oe” not just “o” if we want to be precise 🤷‍♀️

@@truskawkozaur Ok, your ears and my ears must work differently then. I hear Jimmy say: Shwaihahfer. I'm not asking for perfection. I know that the 'ö' sound is hard for Americans. But they can pronounce an O, like in shore, and certainly they can do a K. So Shwaikhofer is absolutely doable, and a hell of a lot closer to the correct German pronunciation than "Shwaihahfer". People just need to be willing to try. But I'm giving Jimmy the benefit of the doubt, he might have been messing around. And it's irrelevant how the average American might say it, Jimmy is a tv host of a long running, popular late night show, who sees countless (international) guests, I expect a little more effort and interest from him than from any Joe Schmoe on the street

Beckenrandschwimmer is rarely used litterally (the literal translation in the quiz is of course correct) . In most cases it just refers to someone with a very frightened attitude. A person that always takes extra precautions to be safe and doesn't treasure risks.

As a German I can tell you that these words aren't that commonly used in daily life. At least not in mine 😅 The fun is that German allows you to create these chain words. You can put many nowns after another and they still make sense together. Which makes it seem very complicated for speakers of other languages but the truth is we like to keep it simple 😉 Although the "hard and strong" pronounciation with our "t's, p's and r's" makes it sound differently 😄

Gotta hand it to the man, he found a way beyond the disillusioning gates of our German film "industry" - big quotation marks! I've never even been much of a Schweighöfer fan, but of course he didn't get to show many facets of his acting in Germany's 2000s-2010s cultural landscape. It seems the man got range and strict work ethics! I'm glad to see it pays off after all those years of mediocre cliché-ridden romantic comedies.

Ich kann's nicht mehr hören! Als hätten Deutsche Regisseure nix anderes rausgebracht in der Zeit als alberne Romcoms. Gab nicht nur Til Schweiger Filme "damals". Doris Dörrie, Tom Tykwer, Fatih Akin, um nur n paar Regisseure zu nennen, die saugute Filme zu der Zeit gemacht haben. Aber Matthias Schweighöfer ist eben kein Moritz Bleibtreu -muss er aber auch nicht sein, hat ja ne Sparte für sich gefunden. Aber tu' nicht so, als hätte es keine schauspielerisch interessanteren Filme gegeben.
