Enjoyed the video. Functional without going overboard. As someone who is borderline OCD I admire your ability to line things up by eye and drill holes without worrying if they are half a degree out Most of all I love your total lack of respect for the health and safety nanny state. And you still have all your fingers!

Do you have a tool holder for your level? Oh wait...you don't seem to have a level. XD
@neelode9 жыл бұрын
He uses a water level: a length of plastic tubing with colored water in it, and a ring of color around each end. Put the rings next to each other and fill the tube with the colored water until the water comes up to the lines. Put one end somewhere, and fix it there (or have your wife hold it, if you have one of those tools), and then when the water at the other end matches the line on the tube both lines are at the same height. Awkward, but it works, and makes your wife feel wanted and useful and all sorts of good things like that. DO NOT SHOW THIS POST TO YOUR WIFE, or your name is mud... Don't worry about me my name is already mud.

The only issue with leaving pliers hanging on that rod is that when you go to pick them up quickly you can end up pinching your fingers as the arms close. Happens to me anyway.

Thank you so much for this video, Matthias! This is a very timely video for me, since I have been debating on whether to use some pegboard that I already have for my tools or homemade hangers and hooks. You just inspired me to not use pegboard. Now I just have to find a good use for all the pegboard that I have. Maybe a downdraft table.
@rustythevibeguy8 жыл бұрын
I like that you are not overly "fussy" about things that really don't matter. Much of what you do here could be easily adapted to a pegboard system (for those who already have it installed) by using plastic drywall inserts in the holes and then screwing the 'holders' shown here to the pegboard,
@matthiaswandel8 жыл бұрын
+RustyCas Or I could just screw it on between the holes. In which case, a pegboard with no holes would actually be better, and if it were plywood with no holes, that would be even better. Which, coincidentally, is what I actually used.

I had a key that used to fall out of my old contractors saw so often it finally broke so I had to trip the safety mechanism inside with a screwdriver to get it to work. That ended up breaking it entirely so I hardwired it to the plug. I didn't have to money to buy a new one and it wasn't that good of a saw anyway. I wish I had thought of putting a screw in it.

I did what u did about 20 months ago and it made a huge difference. I can see and grab tools easily. Before using pegboard I had to move tools to get to the tool. Another way is French cleet so u can move individual holders if need arises. Good skills I like your simple ways of making holders look up scale. I really like my pliers holder where bbn I have them from small to large instead of a drawer and had to shuffle stuff to find what I wanted. Have a friend retiring and building a shop and hope he sees these tool holders. With a new blank shop a guy could really lay stuff out to make life easier

Making shelf for drills is WRONG. (IDK, maybe you already understood your mistake and fix it.) One awkward movement - and all drills fly all over workplace. You need at least rubber band to prevent falling of drills' holders.

After 25 years in business I have come up with a conclusion I don't like drawers or pegboards or any kind of hanging system for small tools. Here's why how many projects do you have that are on the workbench? Here's the solution it's so simple, Go get a bunch of tool belts hang them in front of your bench with some simple hooks that's it. Then if you have a job at your bench it's in the ideal position to grab the tool if it somewhere else you grab the bag and go.

Have you considered making a bunch of small hexagons instead of using those little cups. I imagine it would save a little space and it could adjust to different spaces because, you're using a bunch of tiny hexagons that you could shift around and whatnot.

Very tidy. I think one of the worst things I ever did was to put drawers under my workbench. If you have the wall space though, yours is the way to go!
@henrikmikaelkristensen47849 жыл бұрын
I am about to put drawers under my workbench. Can you explain why that was a problem for you?
@OllyParryJones9 жыл бұрын
Henrik Mikael Kristensen Over time, my drawers became very much like Matthias' at the start of this video - jam-packed with everything; very hard and frustrating to find the tool you actually want. I would now always favour a dedicated storage system, where every item has its own place. Instead of making a space that will take anything and everything! But it depends on what you're looking to do and also what wall space you have free.
@henrikmikaelkristensen47849 жыл бұрын
Olly Parry-Jones: Thanks very much. I might change my mind on it and go with some more dedicated wall storage.
@deezynar9 жыл бұрын
Henrik Mikael Kristensen Drawers under workbenches can also be a problem if you clamp something in the vise, then realize the tool you need is in a drawer that's blocked by the item in the vise. The only things I keep under my bench are bench hooks, shooting boards, and hold fasts. They're stored on simple, open shelves.
@henrikmikaelkristensen47849 жыл бұрын

Pretty new to your channel and really enjoying the walk down memory lane. I don't do much wood work now a days. I do have a question concerning the Band Saw. Do you weld your own blades? I used to get blade stock in 250 foot rolls and weld my own. Also: Did you have much of a problem leveling your band saw table i.e. 90* @ teeth and side of blade? I had to have my Craftsman table machined down.
