Given that you're in Ottawa, this literally could have been my dresser from childhood -- that glue splotch was the kind of repair my dad was famous for. I'm pretty sure this was from Ikea from the late 80s/early 90s -- when Ottawa's Ikea was the smallest in the world. A trip down memory lane!

More than learning carpentry, it shows some of the weaknesses of contemporary lifestyles, in which it is easier or cheaper to put in the trash than to respect the materials until the end of their life. Congratulations is for that and not only that it has so many subscribers.

About 30 years ago I found exactly the same one on the street. these are from IKEA. I stripped it and made a toy cabinet for our daughter with different colored drawers. Now she's in her own apartment and has painted it black with white Draw Puls. this is how you make new things from old things. environmentally friendly.👍👍👍👍👍

My wife and I got an Ikea-style butcher block for a wedding gift. We like it, use it almost daily. But those knock-down joints couldn't hold up to the stresses of rolling it in and out from under the kitchen vanity. Got pretty sway-backed. So I took it apart and redid it with proper mortise and tenons, and enclosed the underside of the cart to keep dust out. Functions so much better now.

Much like your dresser build with the non-matching drawer front a few months ago I like really how this one turned out - it just shows how effectively a discarded piece of furniture can be repurposed to be a useful item again with a bit of effort. I've had trash picked dresser fall completely apart when I put them in my truck but that piece looks solid. In the days before flat pack furniture we could buy unfinished furniture, usually pine, that was pretty fair quality. I have a bookcase in my bedroom that my parents bought when I was 12 (almost 60 years ago) that was finished with an "antiquing" paint kit. Flat paint and glaze. Had to replace the skirting and the bottom shelf has cracked but it's still pretty good shape.

Looks great, I don't imagine it'll ever happen but if you end up sanding down the varnish on the other drawers (or anywhere there is a scratch) try running an iron and a damp cloth over the scratches. I had a bunch of dents on a toolbox made of pine and was honestly amazed by just a bit of steam popped all the dings right out, even the ones from my planer!
@1pcfred Жыл бұрын
Sanding the the finish off would work but it'd be a lot of work. You'd be better off scraping or planing it off. If you were good as scraping or planing, that is. Shavings > Dust. There'd still be some sanding involved but it'd be a lot less. The less you have to sand the better too.
