As far as mounting bearings onto shafts. If you use the green aircraft grade loctite, believe it or not you will almost destroy the bearing trying to get it off. Actually you typically do destroy it removing it. If you want i can go out into my garage and find the Loctite number. Its expensive but you can buy tiny bottles of it. I have a few ounces that have lasted me 10 years so far. I even use the stuff to mount small flanged bearings into hardwood and they NEVER break loose. Its also nice for setting nuts onto threaded shafts in set positions. you have to take a blow torch to them to remove them if you find the need.

Matthias, new subscriber here. loving your videos man, really well done across the board. i'm sure someone has mentioned this but roller bearings can be ordered in almost limitless id and od in both metric and imperial, precision ground drill rod as well, through mcmaster or the like. get rod that is .001" oversized for your bearing id and simply press on with a clamp. sticking the rod in the freezer overnight helps as well as gentle heat on the bearing race and a drop of green locktite. thanks again for the videos and keep up the great work

If you are still considering the shaft + bearing addition, you can always try putting the shaft in the freezer and heating the bearing with a heat gun or hair dryer. As long as the shaft was slightly too large at room temp and now fits when cold, it should lock in well once returned to room temp

Ran across a video I think it's in your archives, of a guy in Ireland who was using dual pantographs to carve wood frames for mirrors. Still waiting on the CNC pantorouter, look forward to seeing someone build one of those. Apparently there are these speed screws you can buy so that the system operates as fast as the commercial ones do.

Couldn't you make a longer shaft for the bearing guide so the router doesn't hit the brackets? Or make a C channel that the router can fit thru?

Do you think it is possible to make a small pantorouter on your pantorouter?
@AliKemp111 жыл бұрын
Matthias I have had a lot of success of mounting a bearing on a metal shaft. Make sure the shaft fits the bearing snugly, saw a few shallow groves in the shaft, use Pratley Steel for assembly. Once dry it is quite sound and because there is not a big load on the bearing, it lasts. I used the same method in construction of the machine lifts which I also built according to your design!
@matthiaswandel11 жыл бұрын
If the bearing fits snug, it's easy. The problem is you need a metal lathe to make the bushing to go between the bearing and the shaft.
@gjdewald11 жыл бұрын
Matthias Wandel Does the bushing have to be metal?
@12345NoNamesLeft11 жыл бұрын
Matthias Wandel Precision ground drill rod is on size and will do a nice easy press fit onto a bearing. 3/8" rod is still pretty cheap too. and bearing R62RS 3/8"id x 7/8"od fits $8 for 36" of rod and $2 for a bearing "SR6/1-OD Radial Bearings" will give you a 1" OD on the same 3/8" shaft No machining needed, Hacksaw the rod to length to cut it, file or sander to chamfer and smooth the edges. It presses in with a vise. You can do the same with metric sizes too. The cheapest import bearings are fine, for this stuff.

For swapping over your template followers, you could use some brass tube to make a roller. For example, 6mm bore x 8mm OD can simply slide it onto your bolt.
@Woodentoolcompany211 жыл бұрын
They are both very nice machines but I think I'd pick the metal one. Buddy did some job making it. I'm guessing he bought your plans and went off them to make it. It's got some nice features that make it more user friendly.

If you are seeking to incite jealousy, you have succeeded. The precision that is obtained with both machines is very impressive. The tool maker in me would prompt me to purchase the aluminum pantarouter. The tool maker in me would also prompt me to build the wood one, just for the challenge to see how accurately I could make it.

Well that just sold me on the commercial Panto-Router! I'm utterly amazed at the time & effort he wastes renderng' tools' in cheap wood that have already been designed better by others in durable wood. In effect, he just made a compelling argument for not wasting time with plywood, hand-made cranks or drawer slides. He's a complete dork. A very nice, intelligent dork....... but a total dork nonetheless!
@MrStrizver11 жыл бұрын
Just because the value judgement for *you* is to spend the money for the commercial product in no way supports your assertion that Matthias "wasted" his time and effort building one. For others, greater value is put on the pride of building something beautiful, functional, and inexpensively.
@Jaboney6911 жыл бұрын
MrStrizver I appreciate and respect your opinion. Yet, if you really listen closely to what Mr. Wandell says, he himself essentially all but negates most the value of his wooden version. It's like building a wooden wheel that isn't particularly round, even though a perfectly round wheel can be had. It allows USE of the tool for something, rather than simply spend time and effort, only to make an inferior tool. I understand and support the "Journey, not Destination" point of view. It's just that sometimes, it's more useful to actually get somewhere.
@MrStrizver11 жыл бұрын
***** Guess we'll just disagree. I did listen to Mr Wandell. He said, "I guess the biggest difference is one of time and money" (6:22 in). $60 vs >$600 and a lot of time vs mere minutes. Additionally, with a few design tweeks his homemade machine could easily incorporate the commercial version's features. I think that a $600+ savings can't be so easily dismissed; the feature deficiencies are not that great. Multiply this by 10 tools, and a woodworker has saved $6,000--definitely not insignificant. In case you haven't watched any of his other vids, he does use his machines, including this one. They are quite functional and do "actually get you somewhere".
@bobberw732210 жыл бұрын
***** I think you have it wrong. The metal design was based on Mr Wandell's original design. See the post from Andreas Ihring... We wouldn't have the option of a manufactured metal one (@ >$600) if it weren't for the time and expertise of Mr. Wandell in making the wooden one first. If you have the necessary tools and wish to spend the time fabricating your own, you could save the ~$500. What's the materials and your time worth to you? Besides, then you could say that you have made something that in turn makes something.

To get a bearing on a metal rod, you either heat the bearing up with a propane torch and jam it on the rod or simply jam it on the rod without heating it. You could also use a bolt through the bearing and hold it in with nuts.
@matthiaswandel11 жыл бұрын
You assume the hole in the bearing is the same size as the rod.
@TheEvanovitch11 жыл бұрын
Matthias Wandel its very very simple, just use the JB weld stuff for metal, since theres no real pressure on the bearing it will stay on with ease, if the hole is not the same size, shim it, and also put jb weld on the shims. it wont hold on if you put high pressure on it, but you're just using it to follow a template, so it will work
@12345NoNamesLeft11 жыл бұрын
Or use a long screw that snugly fits the inside of the bearing and using a file and a lathe or drill turn the protruding part of the screw down to the size needed. But, as I wrote at first, this entire thread is afflicted with the dreaded N.I.H. syndrome
