Of course, An Jae Hyun deserves everything to get to the semi-final of the most prestigious TT Tournament. But he was far from rock solid from both sides. An was good only when he got an easy ball to attack. Anybody can do that. From start to finish, An outright lost many points against Mattias's forehand and his inexperience showed up big-time for not able to do something or adjust to it. His compatriot, Jang Woo Jin would fare a little better against Mattias Falck.

@@joshyang7226 No, I don't think so. 4-3 seems very close, but it was not close at all from the perspective of the last game. An Jae Hyun just couldn't handle Mattias's forehand. Even if they play again, as long as An does not have an effective way to counter Mattias Falck' forehand, Falck will triumph over this kid again.

Falck 's biggest advantage is the fact that no one expects him to beat Ma Long. This will allow him to play more freely and hit that forehand at the first chance.

An Jaehyun: a very spectacular tournament for him esp after starting at the qualification round and good job for beating Wong Chun Ting, Harimoto (making him cry), Jang Woojin but sadly your run had to come to an end. Mattias Falck: Congrats on making history for being the first Swede since Waldner in 1997 to make the final, the first European since Werner Schlager in 2003 and making the final equivalent to 1987 Worlds when a Chinese and a Swede faced each other.

Respect to both players. Very very well played! An Jaehyun should win 4-2, if he won the point at 9-6 in the fifth set. He is more active and decisive, but unfortunately, he is still young to control the rhythm at the crucial moment. Playing with short pips on the forehand side is not easy at all. I've watched Mattias Falck playing at the pro-A in France. He played very well, but can still lose to some top 20 World Ranking players, if the opponent knows to change the pace of the game. Playing with speed, high-risk shots, aggressive is a new trend now. Not only at the women games (like Mima Ito), but now we have Mattias Falck for the Men's side. I hope that he will be a great example for the youngster in table tennis for this "unique style". I have explained the advantages and disadvantages of this style here: pingsunday.com/falck-mattias-equipment-and-playing-style/

I guess the way to beat Falck is doing some soft short balls because he's pretty far back from the table, and play in the middle to avoid giving him too much angle... or maybe you just have to be... THE DICTATOR

Slow spinny balls are always more effective against pips than a drive. If you don’t take the ball on the rise or at its peak with pips, your chance of making a decent shot are greatly diminished. That said, it’s hard to change that on the fly when you’re used to transferring your weight a certain way instinctively to produce a powerful shot. Most of the time it happens, like in this game, when you’re out of position and just looking to make a safe play. But it’s more effective than a strong loop drive where pips can play off of the pace easily

You shouldn't hype him up too much, he just happened to be in the best form of his life in this tournament when usually his results are very mediocre. Maybe once he performs more consistently throughout the years on pro tours like Harimoto, and not just in one tournament, you can say that. And i know that he beat Harimoto in this tournament but like i said he just happened to be in his best form while Harimoto wasn't playing anywhere near his true level. On average Harimoto would beat him most of the time.

@@hillsideonly Yeah. I think his highest world ranking was 19. I played him at the US open in 2005 and he was 48 in the world at the time. He smoked me. His forehand is one of the most deadly I've ever come across and his footwork was super fast. His serves had about twice the spin rotation of someone typical at the 500 level (world ranking). In North America I can safely say there is no one who plays like him, at least not at that level! He is very very difficult to deal with. You'd have to have an amazing receive for him to prevent him from smokin' you. That's why typically European players are much easier to play because they do higher spins with longer rallies. Where as notice any Asian player that is well trained will have a very strong forehand.

@@dickn.ormous1064 But aren't those bullet forehand shots from Falck the real danger? People aren't used to opponent using short pips. With normal rubber in opponent's racket, you can still anticipate the timing of the shot because you're expecting a loop, you know the action. But with short pips, there's no loop, there's just a cannon fired at you at a much faster pace and in a much shorter time. It threw many opponents off balance because though they were prepared for a an attack, they weren't expecting it to come so fast. But who knows, we're talking about the dictator here.

@@rishabhdubey374There has never been a player who can win points consistently when he's constantly on the run.Ma Long can try many placements but attacking the crossover point is of pivotal importance.Anyway, ML's serve and 3rd ball attack combination alone will suffice to tackle Falc,he doesn't need to exert too much effort.

It doesn’t need analysis. The only way Ma will lose is if he’s having an off day. Part of the problem for non Chinese to beat someone like Ma is they don’t have the consistency, forget about overall shot selection and making few mistakes, or poor footwork compared to Chinese players. But the lack of overall consistency is one of the reasons why it’s so hard for non Chinese to beat Chinese players. You can see in this match both players had runs of being good, and runs of making a lot of unforced errors. The top Chinese don’t make unforced errors, so unless you clean your game up tremendously you’re already starring down at least a game on overall points, maybe two. I used to include Fan in that conversation, but now it’s really more just Xu Xin and Ma Long, fan varies match to match

Just to be a little glib with the comparison, Persson has added to Mattias the way Lendl added to Andy Murray. Mattias this year has his same game but more resilience, more consistency with the backhand and no fear. Every time it looks like the opponent has worked out his short pips hitting, he simply tightens everything up and plays better. A great run. Ma Long is a different class and is almost certainly a bridge too far. But then, Murray beat Djokovich in the US Open final for his first major title at a time when Djokovich was dominant and unplayable by anyone. So, maybe the Swedes can dream a little longer.......Just seeing Jorgen in the corner and I have flashbacks of him playing like a God at the Sidney World Team Championships to beat both Kong and Liu Guoliang to lead Sweden to the title against all the odds, against the strongest Chinese team ever assembled (Wang Liqin & Ma Lin on the bench for heaven's sake!). Goosebumps.

An should have been more aggressive after 6th game. And i was a bit disappointed with his last game. I know this is his first big stage so he got tense in every matches. Next time he will be the king !!!

There would be no next time. His game has too many deficiencies.Players like Waldner and Persson had solid technique equal or even better than the Asian players of their generation and they invented new techniques such as backhand looping, the serve grip, away from the table lobbing etc. There are no shortcuts in table tennis. Swedes should develop players with good forehand technique and efficient footwork like they did in the 80's if they really want to revive their former glory.

Beating Ma Long using a top spin looping game is virtually impossible for Europeans which is why players like Boll, Ovtcharov, and Samsonov has such bad records against him. Not saying Falck can beat him, but at least it is giving a different look that might have a puncher's chance. Go big or go home....
