Matti Haapoja personally I try to go into the edit with the end already in mind. It doesn’t always work , sometimes I end up in a totally diff location but in the end the process helps me. I also get on the computer once my 3 year old goes to bed, Dad time is important time 😁

Most basic tip: Have faith in your takes; shoot it once; twice max, and stop the camera asap. Keep the background steady and keep your head steady to make edits easier. Less clips to sort through and less clips to transfer. Less time for shadow files to generate and less time all round. 😎😎 Cheers, Ian in London

FILE ORGANIZATION! Taking the time to organize your files into organized folders and bins can makes it fast and efficient to find what you're looking for when you need it. Also, having folders of files you use in most/all of your videos (intros, music, animated graphics) that you can quickly drag and drop into your projects helps to save time as well. Great vid.

I follow most of these steps since awhile and it really sped up my editing time. I think other factors would be the environment you're working around and the quality of your computer. I think everyone eventually will figure out how to speed up his workflow as it took me couple of years to reach it.

Useful tips! It takes me hours to fully make one video. My process (if anybody cares): idea, buying products, preparing space, filming, transferring footage, proxies, editing, subtitling (this one takes forever), rendering, uploading, filing description, etc., thumbnail, recipe on website, patreon material. Publish. I wish I could at least JUST EDIT and SUBTITLE one video in 8 hours 🤣

I'm so glad you mentioned the Q and W shortcuts -- so many people don't know about them. I find the best time to use them is wuth long clips (interviews, voiceover, etc.) Where you need to find the good stuff and cut out the trash really fast.

I definitely "rewatch" too often. Other than that I think my editing speed is going to come with practice, starting with shooting more precisely. I tend to over-shoot and then burn a lot of time sifting through excessive footage. Also being able to visualize the end product before starting the edit would be helpful too. Not there yet... it's coming though. 😀

Great Video! I'm a pretty experienced editor and do most of what you suggested but even now it takes me anywhere from 4-10 hours to edit a 10 min video talking to the camera. Usually because I like to add a lot of embellishments like images or stock footage to keep the viewers attention. Also because I make lots of mistakes talking to the camera which I cut out haha. If I could get it to 3 hours it would be amazing :D

I work in TV as a producer and we usually calculate 1 hour of edit for every minute of video. But editing my private videos or those of my wife's business, I think your tips will be very helpful to be able to edit a 5min video in less than 5 hours :-)

Working in single steps speeds it up a lot for me. 1. dragging all clips I need into the timeline 2. order the clips according to story, transitions etc. 3. drag the music into the timeline 4. cut like you showed to the music 5. if wanted/needed add transitions and effects 6. sound design 7. color correction and grading 8. titles. Especially having all clips already uncut in the timeline speeds everything up a lot.

Wicked video - thanks Matti! When I first started working at the BBC in the mid 90’s, we used to work off S-VHS edits and worked off a ratio of 1 hour of editing = 1 minute of finished product (on average...). Thank god things have changed..!

Your phone can be such a distraction from life in general, so something I do to stay more focused is keep my phone on Do not Disturb, or better yet turn off notifications in general. That's helped me out a ton!
