Matt, it is mind-blowing how a few differences in Specs can push people to consider switching systems and potentially losing money. This is exacerbated by KZbinrs with giant followings propagating hype to gain clicks because you know we all need forward flippy screens and eye AF good enough to use on spiders. I previously switched from Nikon to Sony by going from a D810 to the A7RIII & A7III thinking the grass would be greener. However, I messed up by holding a Z6 after its release and remembered how good holding a Nikon felt and realized the mistake I had made. I sold the Sony's and went back to Nikon. I lost money in the process and learned a lesson. If the systems works for your user case stick with it.

I shoot sports 95% of my time and my Nikon D5 does a superb job and on a dark winters night with awful floodlights, I will shoot at ISO 16,000 to 20,000 and be very happy with the results, I also use a Nikon D500 for the same thing but mainly when the light is good. I've looked at the D6 and to be honest not much different to the D5 so I will keep shooting with the beast lol

Exactly. The best lesson I learn’t was when I was on a course run by a professional photographer. The first thing he said after greeting the class was to ask us all to switch our cameras to Manual and there they shall stay for the next 5 weeks! It’s about the image!

Matt, completely agree its about the use case. But it is hard to break the habit of specification-ego management. I was convinced I wanted a high megapixel camera (D850, Z7, etc.) but when I really thought about it I realised that the 16 Mpixel sensor on my old Fuji X-t1 was enough. I just don't need a 45-60 Mpixel sensor, or 8K video (my ego gear-head just wants one). My Z6 does everything I actually need and leaves me money to spend on more useful things to help my photography.

I sold all my Nikon DSL and F lenses, leaving me cash rich. While the intent was to get the Z series, I found with the cash that I wasn't locked into any brand. Hasselblad? no - out of reach, but I tried them with lots of others too. So I went with the Z6 with the excellent 24-70/4 leaving enough in the pot for the 70-200/2.8 +TC-2. Why? for me, ergonomics and brand familiarity, plus, and importantly a great menu system. The new lens IQ was too of the list. I'm an amateur. and I'm a bit of a gear head and ai get GAS a lot! LOL. If I get something, I usually get the best...thats just me. But I also believe that the best photos come from the photographer's skill and imagination. Damn. But the point is that you're right Matt.

Cheers Patrick, well the Z6 is such a strong allrounder, I have been taking artwork pics this week, art repro, and the files are just so easy to work with, and image IQ is just so good. Nothing to fault from my perspective. (Artwork also does not move, does not require two slots, nor a vertical grip) :) Cheers matt

@@MattIrwinPhotography You asked? I think you should dust off an old film camera or two and go shoot. I am digitizing many of my old slides / negatives from the 60's on up and I'm finding I used to take more time on the shot (due to cost) than I do now when I can rip off 6 frames in a second. I actually miss my old 4x5 graphic and the "sport" of photography - finding the best location, angle, etc, etc. That to me WAS photography - it wasn't a race.

I’m just a hobbyist, but have bought quite a few F-Mount lenses over the years. I have pretty much decided to go full Z from here out, but still can’t bring myself to sell my F-Mount glass as it will be at such a loss and the FTZ adapter allows me to not have to. I know my 70-200 vrII is not worth much and is the lens I spent the most on when it was new. It hurts my wallet to know that if I sell all 12 of my f-mounts, I might be able to buy the z 70-200 and maybe a tc for it.

As per usual, great info, content and perspective for us Matt. As great as this video is, you literally could have stopped with you’re opening statement and titled it “Use case” 😂 “Stop comparing cameras to each other and simply compare them to ones USE CASE”. I love it. Absolutely love it. I’m sure Da Vinci and Michelangelo didn’t compare whose brushes were better and they painted all of Europe. Lol. You continue to subtly highlight the difference between KZbinrs and Photographers (Actual creative artists) with great subliminal eloquence. Can’t say enough, thank you for creating for those of us actually interested in the beautiful art that photography offered us. Also, we should take note here.... Nice to wake up to "G'day" and another thoughtful post here. The ongoing camera-spec battles remind me of when I was a teenager, not yet old enough to drive, meeting with my buddies to compare the latest 0-60 mph times of current cars we admired. "Zero-to-60" was the King of car performance measurements, or so we thought. We couldn't wait for the next issue of our favorite car magazine whose cover had close-up photos of smoking tires, proclaiming, in big red letters, another "Showdown" between cars. We quickly flipped to the cover story and upon learning that a Pontiac just beat a Chevy to 60 mph by 0.2 second, jumped for joy that a new king of the strip had been crowned. Little did we know that the outcome of a test might -- just might -- depend on the skill of the driver, among other things. I see lots of parallels between my teenage car comparisons and camera comparisons. You nailed it, framing things in terms of one's use case. Not every driver needs to scorch the road to hit 0-60 more than a couple of times, just to feel like they got their money's worth and say, "That's nice" (thinking of your 8K comment). Not every photographer needs a shot of a "ball-on-bat" if they shoot portraits and slow moving or stationary subjects. Some people do, and that's what's great about photography having different genres and use cases. As others have said here, I'm also tired of the many videos whose thumbnail teasers have garish headlines in red or green on yellow backgrounds, a person with his or her mouth open and eyes wide and hands frantically waving, just to get a click for mostly hollow content. For my use case, your comments and channel are the real deal. Thanks!

Once again, very well said Matt!! I am so fed Up with these KZbinrs on hype alert and rapid firing auto focus syndrome... as if without the latest and the greatest, photography couldn’t be done!! Nobody talks about the difference between a beautiful shot and a great shot, lousy light vs great light (and its use to achieve a desired effect), great storytelling as opposed to dull (but apparently properly composed images). Etc... in short there is way too much talk about the container and not enough about the contents. GAS can be dangerous... it tampers with thinking straight! Thanks Matt, you’re really ahead to everyone else with your channel.

I started with Nikon and was then attracted by Fuji a few years later. I bought the X100T and was a disaster. It was slow, soft wide open, and eventually had hardware failure. I sold it at a massive loss, and never touched Fuji again. I'm sticking with Nikon now, never had a single issue aside from wear and tear that is normal. I'm glad I made this mistake during the booming years. Now in the recession I am even more careful what I buy. I'm basically postponing my Nikon Z purchase until the prices go down and the economy goes up a bit, which may be in 2021 or 2022... Until then I will continue to enjoy shooting with my D810.

Had the same experience with Fuji. Bought the EF1, a camera which by then Fuji knew it had a design flaw but kept selling its inventory. Fuji 'fixed' the camera under warranty after it died 6 months after purchase by replacing it with a refurbished unit that had a 6 month warranty thus canceling my original purchase's two year warranty, and of course the refurbished unit died after 8 months. Matt - well said yet again. I've lost so much respect for these "Camera gear review" channels. Here's what I'm seeing: Let's talk Nikon. Nikon releases the Z-Series - these channels "No two card slots" - can't use this for professional work at all, it's a fail. First of all they are XQD - NOT SD - totally not the same thing. They slammed Nikon over and over for the one slot - it was the only thing they could talk about.. Now fast forward - Sony releases a Camera with 1 slot - and to top it all of it's a crappy SD card slot, and we all know those fail far, far more often then XQD. Those same channels don't even mention it - like it's a non-issue. I'm a photographer and Cameras are tools to me, so I lose all respect for these people slamming on Nikon, when Sony does the same thing but they say nothing. I've owned 2 late model Sony cameras, and found my Nikon Z to be the better camera by far. Nikon has always stood on their own merit. I'm glad Nikon doesn't pay for reviews like that. I've sold my 2 Sony cameras and have my D850 with my Z6 now, and my Z6 is with me all the time - love that Camera as a tool. Final thing - I have ZERO problems with the focus on my Z6 - and I have taken hundreds of pics of birds-in-flight and sports with it as well. Thanks for the great video Matt! Stay safe - Chris from Canada

Those channels aren't saying anything cos they have all the models with dual SDs. And of course, sponsorship. They're rich. As hell. They have more gear than an entire family would ever own. Consumers on the other hand don't have such luxury. So they hate it. I don't have anything against their bias due to sponsorship. I would do the same if I had the chance. Cos money. And although XQD is far more reliable than SD cards, wanting 2 of them isn't wrong. As safe as planes are, people still buy travel insurance. As safe as harddisks and SSDs are these days, people still invest in RAIDS and NAS systems to backup files. It's not about the quality of the card. It's reducing the % of failure from 0.001 to 0.0000000000001. And like insurance, it probably is a scam by mathematical calculations, but sells like crazy cos people are generally paranoid to a certain extent.

From what I've seen, the reviewers complaining about single card slots in the Z6 and Z7 have no intention of buying the Sony A7C - they'd get the A7Siii or A7Riv. With the upcoming Z6ii, Z7ii, and Z9 all having dual slots of some sort I don't think those reviewers will care if some future entry level Nikon has a single SD slot. Their hate for Nikon is because Nikon doesn't currently have *any* camera that meets their needs. Reviewers who complain about the Z cameras lacking a flippy screen also complain about Sonys and Fujis which lack a flippy screen. Reviewers who complain about Nikon's autofocus also complain about Fuji and Panasonic autofocus (if they even acknowledge those brands exist). The problem I have is with reviewers who say (essentially): this camera isn't suited to my use case; therefore, it's complete rubbish and nobody should buy it. It's far more helpful when a reviewer points out uses for which a camera is well suited and ones for which it's poorly suited.
@professionalpotato4764

@@Dennis-vh8tz That's why people have to watch multiple reviews to prevent bias. I mean like, every single video review published. Truthfully speaking, apart from challenging sports, wedding, or wildlife environments, most of any cameras produced in the last 5 years will do a more than enough decent job. At least for consumers, but I'm sure pros will still be able to produce some decent results. Flippy screens I can agree though. I do lots of low angle portraits, below waist level, and I wish I had a flippy screen to compose more easily. Nikon's AF is getting really reliable though. People still complain? Panasonic I can understand. Apart from stills, it's the worst AF system to date for videos.

But if you have been doing this for more than 5 years, then you have known how to create great images before all this tech. Do those skills suddenly vanish. Perhaps for sport and wildlife, continued improvement is welcome. Most other subjects - portrait, street, landscape, still life, product, event, glamor, fine art, etc the level of focus today with all modern cameras will do what you need. So I suppose we need to know what percentage of photographers out there shoot sports and wildlife ... Cheers Matt :)

Matt, I've just made my first major camera move in many years. I had been wanting to move up to FF (what I grew-up calling small format) ever since I switched to a digital camera ~2000. This increase in sensor meant I had to change out almost all my old Canon kit (the digital kit) even if I stayed with Canon. In researching it I realized quickly how absolutely crazy you people on KZbin can get, and so I'm glad to hear you acknowledge that all these systems can do the job. The two things I knew I wanted were FF and mirrorless. I decided to go with the Nikon Z6, but the truth is that it wasn't the camera that convinced me but the glass. I wanted a few high quality zooms and primes that were f/1.8; others might want f/1.2s, and that might be nice but is outside my price-point. And I love the specs on the z-mount. I waited until the z6 ii was being talked about so my refurbish z6 was almost the price of a z5; once the z7 ii has been out for a couple years and the z9 is around I may want the higher pixel count, but I can't imagine I will make another major system change for many years... may change my mind for medium format ;)

Howdy Matt. I love your videos and this one was outstanding. I worked as a Metallurgist and industrial photographer for many years before retiring a few years ago. I'm a film guy and only recently got into digital photography. After working with Hasselblad and 4×5 film camera's, I purchased a Nikon D7200 and have been very happy with the purchase. It does exactly what I need when I take photographs. It's always tempting when seeing the next latest and greatest offerings from camera manufacturers. But, I have no need for changing what I have and use. I do believe that most who are buying or switching from one manufacturer to another are not working pro's, but enthusiasts looking for something that could possibly knock the end results up a notch. And this is what manufacturer's are depending on to keep them in business. Imaging what that industry would be if no one purchased new gear and just used what they had. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your renewed interest in film.

Matt, I find your logic refreshing. Use Case is applied to justify every one of my gear purchases. I've been around long enough to sample many camera brands and types/formats. I have switched from system cameras to all in 1s - Film to Digital - Medium format to 35 mm etc... and paid the price in money and image quality along the way. Use Case 1) My subjects are outdoors... landscape, seascape wildlife. 2) My art is still photographs, not video 3) I have to carry my gear on my back for long hikes... (sold my primes and have all F4 or slower zooms) 4) I need a brand that respects its customers so I have Nikon. (Canon left it's customers behind when it switched to the EF mount and has numerous mounts), (Sony dropped the minolta mount and is not a dedicated camera company, ie. Leica, Hasselblad, Nikon) etc... So my own Use Case determines my future purchase of a Nikon Z7??? in three years when I retire.

I think the issue is not about the glass but the tool being able to provide you with the resources needed to make your work easier and more efficient. Yes, Nikon has excellent glass and super IQ. But the fact that, for instance the Z cameras, AF system is not on par with other systems it is disappointing. I continue to shot with D850 because the IQ is just superb. I tried the Z6 when it came out and the AF was really disappointing, at least the eye face/detection and tracking. We/I buy newer tools because they provide newer tech such as eye detect, bigger AF coverage, and not necessarily because I will be getting far superior IQ. This task will allow me to capture the shot I need but when they fail to deliver then you have to consider other alternatives. I recently had the opportunity to shot with Canon R6 and I can attest the Canon overall system is great, simple, quick, and reliable. So I guess at the end depending on the user needs, you need to sometimes move along and despite loving your current glass move to other systems because they offer something that yours don't.

I say use case should determine if you need new gear, not the marketing departments at certain camera brands. Thanks for the great video. I've been shooting Canon for years and don't need the latest R series bodies as the 15 year old 1Ds II and my 2 year old 77D both do very well in the rodeo arenas I go to. They're fast enough and sometimes I have to slow them down even more to convey motion or make a subject look good under harsh arena lights. And then there's the Canon M50. It's not weather sealed, it's only got 1 SD card slot, it's deemed "entry level" by so many KZbinrs it's ridiculous, it's battery life is short, yet it too can produce an acceptable image using it's kit lenses during certain rodeo events under harsh lighting. It's made its way into my kit TWICE as a lighter companion to my other Canon gear.

USE CASE: Sports/Wildlife/Portraits. Amateur photographer nearly 3 years. A fellow shooter in Chicago (I'm in Texas) called me up frustrated trying to auto-fine tune on his Nikon D850 and 600mm f/4 combination. He had spent hours attempting this. Was frustrated with the error messages and results. I led him through it via video and it got me thinking about USE CASE and your video. I often drive 3 to 4 hours at 4 am or evenings near Sundown when going out to shoot. I weighed the time it took to go, spent shooting, processing images, and my frustrations with the 200=500mm f/5.6 zoom's slow and inefficient AF for BIF. Great lens for the price otherwise. When I figured in the cost of my time it was clear that purchasing a used 600mm f/4 would improve my experience, enjoyment, and make those adventures a bit more rewarding (and it has). Prior to my help, my frustrated Chicago friend murmured under his breath "I'm done with Nikon". His friends also shoot BIF and have all switched to SONY. They sold some of their gear to him. Skipping auto-Fine Tune for portraits with razor thin DOF (i.e. f/0.95 - 1.4) or super telephotos would be nice, but not a deal breaker to make me switch brands or upgrade to mirrorless just yet. That said, when you spend hours at dawn driving to get "the shot" and factor in the expense of travel, time spent, and the enjoyment of getting home to find nine of ten keepers of a bird in flight instead of 2-3 then it might just be worth changing systems. More FPS/accuracy of autofocus might just be that important to some. If it makes you happy when you are out shooting, it may be more valuable than money...er...correct? After all, we need a camera/lens in our hands that makes us want to take pictures. So it won't be the 2 lbs less weight of the SONY or CANON 600mm f/4 that gets me there, the speedy AF of the focus by wire of the SONY). It will ultimately be if Nikon can up it's AF tracking game in Mirrorless for my USE CASE. Let's hope Nikon can....and soon.

Hi Matt, interesting thought provoking exercise and I’m with you on this, I’ve never understood why anyone would change a system when you’re already invested in it. I believe we all buy into brands based on two main factors being affordability and ergonomics and truly believe that there are no bad systems and you buy what you need therefore why should that change unless your photography goes in a completely different direction. The only reason I’d move from Nikon is if it never existed any longer and there was no support whatsoever. That’s not to say that I wouldn’t own a different brand alongside because I bought a X100V earlier this year because for me it was the right tool for the purpose I bought it but that doesn’t mean I’m going to switch out systems because it could never replace my Nikon.

Thanks for another great, thought provoking video. Your channel's invitation to comment always feel so much more genuine than other channels that I subscribe to. For myself, after a couple of years trying a few different genres, I found that I most like to shoot landscape and portraits. And the last few years I've been chasing lenses with character for the use case of family portraits and daily family life. Being a Nikon shooter, I found myself to have fallen in love with the older F-Mount lenses (AI, AIS, D) and have collected a few of these. I also have a few Zeiss lenses which I also adore. I tend only to use my newer G lenses for my landscape work, when I need either the 20mm or 85mm focal length (I only own prime lenses), or when I'm feeling too lazy to manual focus my older lenses on the kids. I recently bought earlier this year the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 pancake lens (Japanese market version) and it's easily one my most favourite lenses for daily use. Ergonomics, character, tone/contrast, bokeh, there's not much else like it. It's pretty damn sharp too from f/2.8 onwards. The D750 got smashed to bits in an accident this year and I had the chance to change to the Z-mount. After much deliberation, I felt I would miss the OVF and full metering (which I understand is absent from the Z cameras) and the ergonics just wouldn't be the same as what I'm used to. So I plumped for the D780 (D850 was too expenses and wasn't sure I wanted to hulk it round for daily use around the family) instead of the Z6. No matter what happens in the future, I really can't see myself ever selling my old lenses.

Excellent "stop and think" video. You are absolutely spot on in your analysis, as usual!! In my early years entering the world of DSLRs, I bought a D600 to use alongside my D7100. It was then that I realised how important it was to study the technical capabilities of the gear I was buying to see how it suited my application and style of using it. The D600 was a great camera, but just did not cut it for photographing birds and bird action. I have waited for Nikon to make their Z 7 to be at least on par with my D850, if not better at acquiring focus, tracking, more frames and as good buffering and also shooting video in a more friendly manner. I am hopeful that Nikon will have addressed these issues in the Mark II models. For me, Nikon has been the system that I found most comfort with and I am willing to be patient and wait for them to bring a mirrorless that is worthy of being a Nikon. Thank you for bringing practical and relevant content on You Tube.

Interesting and pertinent topic you raise here Matt, and spot on the money in rather a literal sense! Towards the end of film, I got fed up humping Minolta gear and bought myself a Ricoh GR1v 28mm focal length 35mm film camera and liked it so much that the Minolta gear became redundant. It suited my use case perfectly at that time: an always on you street and landscape camera. Moving into digital I stayed small and light with the Ricoh GX100 24-70mm. Love the portability and image colour. GXR came next, with the M-mount module the lens choice was immense, taking not only my old Minolta glass, but Zeiss, Voigtländer, Leica...and still quite light and portable. Then, impressed with the IQ of my Leica 24mm f2.8 I messed up by purchasing a Leica Q. Ungainly, hard to grip, though aesthetically pleasing from a distance...actually my GRIII is much better simply because it is always on my belt whether I am on a deliberate photo mission or not. Another example of the right tool for most jobs. And Nikon? Well 28mm focal length is quite limiting and the Z6 just felt as though it had been waiting to snuggle into my grasp by whole life. Unlike the Q, I can carry it all day hanging off my arm, it is weather proof so no angst there, and I can even stick my manual glass on it. Ticks all muse case boxes, even ones I didn't know I needed. Like my Minolta and Ricoh history, when you find something that mostly works for (or with) you, working with the deficiencies becomes an enjoyable challenge. Just don't understand those guys who study spec sheets all day, anxious not to be left behind, brand-hopping to achieve their transient holy grail. I am so happy to have arrived at Nikon's mirrorless door at just the right moment. This system meets my needs and likely will do so for quite a while. Eternity sounds a bit grim, so I'll leave it here! Keep up the good work Matt! Appreciated...👍

Really interesting video. I like the way you’re looking at things with regard to all the systems being in great shape by the end of the year. Luckily for me, the Z7 meets 90% of my shooting needs. I do need a 2nd camera for video and time lapse and I’m thinking the Z6 II will most likely be perfect, we’ll see. For now, the Z7, while not optimal for those use cases, is working well there too. Thanks for the interesting content, keep it up!

Well said Matt. I’d argue that camera specs have been mostly irrelevant for at least the last 6 to 8 years. Most don’t really ‘need’ as much as they think they do - it’s mostly marketing hype that we get sucked into. I’m using ‘old’ tech (Fuji X-E2) and still don’t use most of its features.

I the switch from DSLR to mirrorless temporarily mixed things up, with autofocus getting worse then improving, and the potential of video increasing but execution varying between brands. So if AF and video matter to you features do too. For now. But not for much longer. It's obvious that we'll get near parity soon, with brands who can't get there either fading away or finding their own niches where it doesn't matter.

Great conversation starter as always. Love your well reasoned thoughtful topics. For me I am sitting on a perfectly great Nikon D850 and D500. They have almost identical ergonomics and controls, so I can work easily and transparently between both. I definitely want to go mirrorless, but only when it becomes a clear upgrade. I like the idea of what you see is what you get in the viewfinder. My hesitance has been primarily around the focus system, I shoot some action/sports/wildlife so I want it to be pretty crisp and accurate. I am looking forward to the Z6II and Z7II and reading the reviews about how the dual processors and other tweaks improve that. I am a Nikon guy, and their history says they keep working at things till they perfect them (evidence the evolution leading up to the Nikon D850 DSLR).

I am a first time viewer. I think your questions and reasoning are very much on point. However, about 18 months ago I did switch systems. I had been shooting with Pentax for years and just didn't feel they were keeping up. I had the K-3 which came out about 5 or 6 years earlier and nothing significant in a flagship crop sensor came out afterwards. Plus there was significantly less lens selection. I was convinced Pentax was not going to be around in a meaningful way in the future. I sold all my gear on Ebay and slowly bought used Nikon gear on Ebay and from a friend who had switched to Panasonic because he liked the smaller size. I have invested a bit more money but not a lot and have lenses that better meet my shooting style. I believe my photos have improved. I think for me this was the right thing but I thought long and hard about the switch before I did it. I still miss the Pentax menu system that I was so familiar with, but I am getting there. I am now shooting with the older D800 and the recent D7500. I will probably eventually switch to mirrorless but am in no hurry. I love what I can do with my new equipment. Having said all of that your point about chasing the latest specs is very very true. Thanks for posting this thoughtful video.

Why I chose Nikon Z system not a long time ago? I am a hiker and traveler, no pro, 90% stills. I went to a big stone shop and test the ergonomy. I took nearly every camera in my hand. Sony and Fuji was out. Sorry I dont want the camera which I feel uncomfortable in my hands. Canon and Nikon was OK. I like the big flanges of them - precondition of edge to edge sharp lenses - also to cheaper lenses ( not only big and expensive high-end ). I chose Nikon because Canon don´t have appopriate "kit" for me - body with IBIS and small and light wide zoom. I bought Z6+14-30/f4 for 2500 Eur. I am happy and satisfied.

About a month ago I bought a used Fuji xt30. I already owned a z7 and a Z50. Wanted to try the Fuji after all the hoopla I've heard about their image quality and retro styling, and I must say I am thoroughly impressed. Just for the sheer Joy of photography the Fuji with all its buttons and dials blows everything else out of the water when it comes to the fun aspect. Even thinking of just selling the Z50 as having two crop sensors leaves one home in the box not being used, especially now that my small gigs have just dissolved and I don't really need two similar cameras on a shoot. I might be up for getting the new z7 if it had lighted dials and buttons for the night time landscape imaging I do.... But then again, I always have a small flashlight with me.... Sooo. The z7 works just fine for me in most respects.. I have used digital medium format, full frame digital, micro four thirds and anything else I can get my hands on. I always buy used at first, to decide if I want to play with a new system. I was able to buy into the Phase One system because I had an account with Calumet here in San Francisco before they went out of business, and they sold me a lot of their rental gear at a third of the going rate. I like the excitement that comes from learning a new syatem offers, but don't want to pay the price up front. I think in photography as in a lot of other aspects, patients is a REAL virtue. Cheers, Mr. frugal

You are right. I started with Nikon (F801) and 7 bodies later now use a Z6 and Z7. Of course the R5 or the A7RIV look tempting, but in the end there is not enough difference to switch systems. I would trow away so much money it would be insane to switch. And the S-lenses are great... What I am thinking about is building a medium format system next to the Nikons. Not for more megapixels, but for the "richer" look that medium format offers compared to full frame.

Love your insight as always Matt. After all, I believe its the Photographer that matters. I've had no problem with my existing system, and it serves my use-case pretty well. I don't think Brand Loyalty should be a concern for many people, but switching systems right and left, as you said, does cause its overall credibility to be lost. I'm glad that Camera Manufacturers are innovating in a very vast space, but the question still remains, out of all these things in the world, Which one will satisfy you the most?

Selling off lenses is a common enough occurrence but I have to admit that I do not understand it. I started with Canon and I can use my EF lenses with Panasonic, Sony. Agree on basing your decision on use cases. I did change from Fuji to Nikon last year because I wanted higher resolution (Z7) and better edge to edge sharpness which Fuji didn’t offer without having a second GFX system (at higher cost to change as I would need to keep most of my X series kit). The Z7 completely satisfies my requirements and did what I hoped when I changed. I don’t need the projected upgrades of the Z7II, so won’t be upgrading - because of my use case (mainly landscape photography)

Matt completely agree. The rush to get to the other side is mainly pushed by KZbin influencers who are always “switching.” The race of specs is tiresome. Recently I have been purging my KZbin subscriptions away from those who are the palm on head “I switched” and “The Camera to Beat” to those who talk about process, technic, and the art of the image. Saying that, I did just move from a Nikon d3400 to the new Panasonic S5. I have always wanted to move mirrorless and the Panny had everything I wanted at a great price and a free Sigma 45mm.

Hi Matt, earlier this year I chose the Nikon Z6 for three reasons important to me, it handles video well; it is excellent in low light for both stills and video; previous experience with Nikon F5 and F4s had cemented in some brand loyalty; and I was keen to experience mirrorless, as I believe it is cutting edge (and I haven't been disappointed). So in that order, the choice was use-case, use-case, confidence with the Nikon brand, and a desire to surf a progressing tech wave where significant R&D resource is being invested by all competitive brands. Great episode, another thinking piece. Cheers from Auckland.

I am hobbyist photography and been using my Nikon D7200 for traveling, family gathering and chasing the grandkids. Since I am getting older; I decide in the beginning of the year to purchase Nikon Z50 with the kit lens and FTZ adapter (keep my D7200) to lighten the load of DSLR camera. Unfortunately the pandemic has stop all my traveling, so I haven't been able to use the Z 50 for the reason I purchase the camera. But so far I really like the size, EVF and video feature of my Z50. May consider to trade-in my D7200 to purchase another Nikon mirrorless camera, but I don't think I need to go with a FF camera, so waiting to see if Nikon comes out with a D500 replacement. My use case demanded faster auto focus so switched (added really) to a D500 from a Pentax. But like in motorcycles, telescopes, woodworking tools, cars - we can be gadget freaks and love reading the spec's and justifying our choices. But in the end, can we afford to weather vane? But if I have a task that really needs a proper tool I'll try to get that tool. Assuming I have the money. No money - then I'm forced to improvise - which in a lot cases is not a bad thing to be forced to do. In the end we still like talking about the latest gear. It's fun. :^)

Use case wins, however.... you need to know what that use case is! I only started photography last year and dipped my toe in with a M50 Canon. That was to ensure I didn't get too deep and realise photography wasn't for me. Also, considering that mirrorless will be the way forward may as well start there... After a few months I realised it was for me and spent a bit more on the 100-400L lens, cool... now, I realised that I'm in low light a lot, hmmm, a full frame to compliment, in comes the EOS R... By the end of the year I've figured out my predominant "use case", landscapes, motorsport and wildlife (being the majority). I've also realised that the cameras may not be the most suited to that use case, but hey, they still do it and get great shots so oh well, crack on.... By March this year my frustration is growing in aspects on the Canon mirrorless cameras.... so I ditched the M50 all accessories associated and bought the D500 with a single 200-500 lens as my dedicated wildlife set. Now, this seemed like a backward step to some (back to DSLR, 2016 camera etc.) but my god it just worked! Planning to keep the EOS R for more static shooting as I liked that camera in my hand and the files it produced were great. Ok, now the D500 layout simply worked for me and the EOS R button layout almost became foreign... By June all my Canon stuff was gone and bought a D850 because it also fit my use case (all of them) and felt good in my hand. I lost money learning but not as much as one would think as I bought smart with the Nikon stuff. My use case was not certain when I made my first decisions... at least it is now, and I'm happy with my stuff!

I am a Canon guy, and will probably stay with Canon. But Nostalgia to the old film day may make me use Fujifilm cameras with manual dials. Maybe go Canon for FF, and Fujifilm for APS-C. IIRC, you went with Nikon Z because of the shortest flange distance & large mount. This is exactly why I started my digital photography with Canon EF cameras: they allowed me to adapt more manual focus lenses & I was a student then.

I agree with you fully Matt. Camera Co. & their extended Sales team of KZbinrs job is to market camera's. But as photographers we got to select Camera according to our requirements, ease & comforts of operating and affordability. According to me it starts with your Vision. Followed by your knowledge, understanding & how well you make use of Photo-mechanics in various conditions & situations. Apart from basics like Aperture, Shutter-Speed, ISO, Metering, WB, Focusing rests are for Personal Comforts & Conveniences. I am yet to find a photographer, camera & lens manufacturer just by viewing a photograph who can identify & give exact Metadata info of the captured image. As a photographer you just got to enjoy & appreciate an image rather than trying to dig info's on which equipments, what settings, etc. IMAGE is very important & not which Camera, Size of Sensor, etc... & how it was captured.

From where I sit, I think at each price point the cameras available are similar enough in specs so that they are all generally good choices for a general purpose camera. Some are a little better as stills cameras and others are little better as video cameras. Some will do a little better in specific niches such as landscape, street, wedding, etc. So it really comes down to budget and precisely what is the primary use case if you are new to photography. For the rest of us, you are probably best staying with your current manufacturer as you are most familiar with their quirks. I have been shooting Nikon for many years with several different cameras. Switching to another brand means new lenses, new UI, new accessories, and a new set quirks I have to learn. All my Nikons have similar quirks which felt like an old, favorite pair of slippers in an odd way. I was asked today what by a neighbor what I thought was most important in photography. I told him the major manufacturers are pretty much a wash as far as quality of gear and they are all good, so pick one and don't look back. But the most important things are to learn how to use the gear and to learn fundamentals of photography such lighting, composition. Then practice as much as possible. As for switching, I do not think most who do really find they have any better gear overall, just traded one set of quirks for different set of quirks. However there will be a few situations where someone might need to switch with the most likely one fortunately a manufacturer exiting the camera business.

Agree 100% - too many times we find ourselves chasing specs rather than the application. Computers are a good example - processor speed. If your computer does everything you need it to do efficiently does spending thousands to get a new system matter. So it take 5 seconds to load and app - a new computer loads it in 2 seconds - worth it? I think not. However, if you do enough video and the render time is reduced from half hour to 15 minutes THEN you benefit. Otherwise - go get a beer and just wait. Your car comfortable, fast enough, and running well? You really need that Lamborghini? Probably not. I have collected quite a few lenses, bellows, accessories for my old Nikon F2's - if only someone made a digital back for them - why change to another brand? Most of the lenses are not used that often and I've tried them on the newer cameras and they work just fine. ALL the primo brands are good cameras. As they say, "You pays your money, and takes your choice!".

I feel nikons mirrorless are still not mature jet so let's let in 5 years I will be ready to move on if they improves together. I am happy with my current camera system so all I need to work more in editing and capturing to push my skills get best out of my camera.. remember camera is just a tool 🙌

Just found your channel a few minutes ago. Great video, Matt. Pretty much sums up my philosophy about consuming. I am not really into the "if some is good, more is better" mentality of modern consumers. Back in the days, for more than 30 years, my camera was a Pentax LX that came with me during many motorcycle trips. A very large number of photographers used to keep their SLRs for long periods of time. Fast forward to the digital era and, all of a sudden, companies and photographers must keep up with the Jones? As soon as company A comes out with this new awesome feature, company B cameras become obsolete? Many pro photogs still use their Pentax K-1 and produce excellent images that still compare well today. I also own an X-T4 because of its size and weight. It produces beautiful images. I am doing a wedding in 2 weeks and the idea of carrying my K-1 around with grip and 70-200 mm lens scares me. At 66, I've got shaky hands sometimes and I wear glasses. The weight is an issue for me. I guess that it's all a matter of tradeoffs, whatever one buys. I was going to consider the new EOS R5 but, CAN$ 5300, are you kidding me? And glass isn't cheap either. I'm not into video much so all the talk about 8K or 4K, don't get my attention much. Sony? Nah! I prefer intuitive menus. According to a friend who is a pro photog with Canadian Press, when Sony cameras break down, it is a nightmare to get parts and service from Sony. If and when Pentax comes out with a successor to the K-1, I'll consider it and keep my actual one as a 2nd body. If I don't hear anything in the next year or so, I might keep only my Fuji system.

Great information Matt, I still have my Nikon d810, D500 and Fuji Xt3 and a Nikon f4. I looked at the pros and cons of the z series system before investing in Fuji and I decided to wait and I’m glad I did. I will monitor the Z6 II and yes I have used the Z6 my local shop has them for rental especially the movie package. If the Z6 II is what I’m looking for I might take the leap if not, I’m fine where I am. Do you know Matt if the Z6 ii will be backwards compatible with XQD. USE CASE!!!

People get too wrapped up in specs and forget probably the most important aspect of photography (IMO)-the human/machine interface. I've been a Nikon shooter since the mid 1970's. I spent some time with Olympus digital because it worked for me at the time, and when I went back to shooting sports professionally I went back to Nikon. I've shot everything out there. I can get the image with just about everything out there (within reason). But I'm going to be a lot more comfortable, proficient and efficient with Nikon. Not because it's the best. Just because it's what I'm familiar with (now) and what felt right (from day one and all along) to ME. I love the new Sony stuff, but I get tied up in their menu's trying to find stuff for hours it seems. I love the new Canon stuff but I feel like everything is backwards. I can bounce around my D4s and Z6 to a D5 or D6 or Z7 or D850 and I'm completely comfortable just like some people are with other manufacturer models.

I've decided to focus on lenses, and choose camera according to my use case and if the lenses can be adapted. I'm building a collection of Voigtlander lenses, and if I find a camera which works for my needs, which are based around manual focusing and great images, then I go for it. As it is, the Z5 seems very convincing right now. I don't care about video or a fast frame rate. I do care about a good and clear EVF and good manual focus aids, and it seems that the Z5 has that. The only issue I have, is the back screen and that I'm not a 100% convinced about the built for the long haul. I'm very intrigued by Canon's EOS R, but it lacks the IBIS, which also is a strong selling point for the Z5.

For stills a factor that is forgotten , the lag of a Lowpass filter.. in a test you could see some smudge effect on the EOS R5 with far superior very expensive lenses , loosing the finest small details. We tested the Z7 side by side with the 1/3 of the price z lens and it was better., clearer , crisp. WE HATE THE LOWPASS FILTER.. !!!

How much did you have to crop In to see the difference? I agree a too stronger AA filter can kill fine details, but the ones on the canon R5 and R6 Are fairly weak as evendent by amount of moire showing up in the dpreview studio compare tests.

@@haydennettleton3272 In bird photograpy , most photographers need to crop a lot .. Nikon D500(no LP filter) -> 20Mp with 500mm = DX750mm then crop at least 40%or more is common.. You simply can not dictate a bird at 3 meters and use a 5Dmk4 (LP filter) wit a 300mm f2,8 all the time.. So with D850 (45,7Mp Fullframe) you have to crop to DX extra above the 40%

As always, just a heap of common sense! I decided to go with Nikon when I made my first jump into the world of modern DSLR systems back in 2012 - I bought a Nikon D7000. Over the years I expanded my glass and, as my experience grew, upgraded the bodies as well, however, when I look back at some of the shots I took on the D7000 and the "kit" lens, for general viewing - i.e. on my Flickr or SmugMug pages or my Facebook or Instagram, (all taken as jpegs as, at the time, I knew nothing about RAW and post-processing) the better ones are just as sharp, just as bright, as any I have taken in RAW on my D850 and processed via Lightroom / Photoshop. Having said all that, I am in the throes of moving to the Nikon Z system and enjoying the benefits the mirrorless technology is offering - not least of which is the lighter weight (as a 71 year old, and growing older, weight becomes an increasingly important factor!!!). But, most importantly, I see the benefits of sticking with my decision to go Nikon and, for all the reasons Matt outlines, see absolutely no benefit in jumping ship. Thanks again, Matt, for another well measured look at the industry / hobby, we all enjoy.

I replaced a 7100 for a Z5 mainly for its video capabilities (quick to grade flat profile, 4k, 1080p120, smooth focus pulls and good video focus tracking). With the FTZ it works great with all F glass, including a couple of Sigmas I have over here. For photos I really couldn't tell the difference between the 7100 and the Z5 though - IQ is basically the same, even with a slightly lower resolution on the Z5. Single card slot vs two (not a big deal, but good to have), the 7100 has way more physical controls, providing good physical feedback, vs the Z5 which requires looking at the screen and/or using touch for most functions. The 7100 feels like a more pro-oriented product, but at the same time the Z5 is way more technologically advanced. If size and video don't matter - the 7100 wins for me. If size and or video + the amazing (but expensive) Z glass matter - the Z5 is a good choice. The ergonomics of both is pretty good though, with the Z5's touch being pretty great for reviewing shots or placing the focus point while shooting video. The Z-lenses can do amazingly smooth and natural focus pulls, something not many people tend to talk about. But then again, you're not looking for video capabilities...

I plan to stick with my D850 for a long time. Don't believe I'll change to mirrorless for a few years. It's good to hear that Nikon is coming out with the Z9 which Nikon needs to happen. Sounds like they'll be catching up --- but is that enough. I don't think the competition is going to just wait for Nikon. There are several features of their systems which will no doubt be improved during the next year. Will Nikon be either even or ahead of the competition? What does the future hold?

My point of view I just bought a new system camera for the first time in 34 years. At that time I bought a Canon T90 with 7 lenses and an A1 as a spare. I also bought a second-hand Hasselblad with my dad. Photographed all the time and I always dragged with me a large and heavy equipment. The equipment didn’t have autofocus, you had to do it manually. Then I got a family and suddenly it was not as easy to carry all the equipment to photograph my daughter. Then came the digital revolution and buying a new equipment was out. I did not want to drag on a system camera with everything else. It became compact cameras and mobiles instead. Instead many photos that otherwise would never have been lost was taken. The limitations in the equipment meant that you instead had to practice your creativity. I also started painting watercolour and it also gave new angles for creativity. Fast forward to today. Turned 60 and got a photo workshop of my siblings. It was fun at the workshop but the limitations when it came to manual settings on a compact was there as I knew what I was missing. I also went on a 60 years road trip and blogged about it. When I was going to upload photos to the blog, I could only use my mobile because the card reader did not work in the laptop for some reason. Therefore, when I decided to take the leap to a system camera again, I had a number of requirements: It should be easy to carry with you so that you don’t miss any pictures. It should be possible to photograph manually. It should be possible to send photos to social media without having to read memory cards. The system must be future-proof. No systems where you already after a few months missed something as you did with my T90. When I bought it the Minolta 7000 was about to revolutionize the world with its autofocus. The camera must ergonomical to shoot with and everything logically placed. I initially did not want to buy too expensive equipment, but it would be good if there were more advanced solutions to go ahead with if you so wished. After trying in a photo shop, it became a Nikon Z50 because it felt so good to hold, better than Sony, Canon, etc. which I also tried. If you look at the list of requirements, there are no figures, but there are completely different parameters that affected which camera it became. I knew that the technical aspects of all cameras was good enough for my needs. I’m still fond of my Canon T90 but not to take pictures with it daily even though it still works great 34 years later as just the camera house weights more than the Nikon with a 16-50mm lens.

Matt - Im waiting patiently for next weeks announcement. If Nikon put in video and stills backup ill be happy. If they don't do this I will move to Sony - probably the A7S3. I dont have any problems with Nikon its just if Im going to spend £2500-£3000 on a new camera body I want that to offer me some backup security. I lost 60 images last week - it was my fault I pulled the card out while powered up - if id had a second card I probably would have had those images.
