I took your advice before I even got it! I am going out my door to shoot my first job with Nikon Z6 III and grip today. I upgraded from a Z6 ll ! I have been a professional photographer for the past 55 years. I love the new technologies and I try to keep myself updated. Your videos are very entertaining and educational. Thank you for all the hard work that you put into them! I continue to look forward to your content and insights. This video couldn’t have dropped at any more convenient time 😊

The job went very well, thank you! I need to make a few tweaks to the settings, as you would to any new piece of equipment. I'm very satisfied with the overall camera, especially the speed and accuracy of the Auto Focus. I think that is a vast improvement over the Z6 II. I have to get use to the "Flippy Screen", I can see some of it's advantages, it's just NEW to me. The files are wonderful (as expected from Nikon). I use my Z7 II for my studio and portrait photography. I don't think that there will be a Z7 III, I think that has been replaced by the Z8. Jules

My first mirrorless camera was a Z6 years ago and I still use it most of the time for my magazine shots. I suppose I gravitate toward it is because I know where every button is and I can depend on it as it's never let me down. I use a Z9 for sports and a ZF because I like the look and feel of an old school layout. I also use the Z6 for my high school banners. It's like your favorite fishing lure. Thanks Matt for all you do, it is much appreciated.

Thanks again, Matt. My Z6II did not have "bleeding edge" AF. I waited, waited ... for the Z6III, but I gave up & bought a Z9 in June 2022. At least with the Z9 I didn't have to buy a grip like I did for my D800 & D500. The Z9 fits my hand like a glove. I will admit, I do shoots birds-in-flight & sports a lot. But the "bleeding edge" AF does also help with grandchildren doing backflips into the pool. Cheers.

Absolutely Worth it!!! Our Studio has benefited in an Amazing Way!!! The Partially Stacked Sensor, The Video Production is Exponentially Better!! PGA, ESPN, & Other Opportunities gave me the confidence to take it to full use!! The Completeness of the camera lineup range (Z9,Z8,A6III)is surreal!!!

I purchased a Z6 III the day it became available. I was an early adopter of the Z Series with a Z7 when it was released in 2018. I added a Z9 to my kit as soon as I could. I use them all regularly. Different horses for different courses. The Z6 III is my choice for event, Z9 for concert/dance/action, and Z7 for portrait. They are all brilliant. Cheers Matt!

Evening Matt from UK... just caught with this Vlog, thanks for the comparisons on the Z6 trilogy. I own a Z6. I came from a d7100 so kept the 24 megapixels but just went full frame. I absolutely love the size, weight & ergonomics of the z6 & it suits & serves my amateur photography brilliantly. I've recently coupled the z6 with the 40 mm f2 & love this combination in size & weigh for walk around in the city & street photography. The z6 despite being 6 years old, is in my view still a great camera, for my needs. Coming from an older DSLR the image stabilization is great, it's very good in low light, auto focus is much better than I was used to & ample for my needs & the glass for it is so good. I won't be getting rid of it anytime soon. I'm very happy with the 1st iteration of this super little camera. All The Best & Thanks for the Vlogs 👌🏻👍🏻😊 David

I just upgraded from D600 to Z6 about 7 months ago. I bought used, obviously. Very happy with it. I do mostly nighttime, so AF deficiencies aren't a concern. However, I'm still very impressed with AF capabilities of Z6 vs D600. Even with my first F to Z adapter, which was Viltrox brand, I was getting faster performance than I did with my D600. I quickly upgraded to the Nikon brand FTZ, due to issues with aperture control with several of my F lenses. The fact that I can get faster AF through a lens adapter than with my old DSLR speaks well for it. I just wish Nikon would make a lens adapter with AF functionality, because some of my F lenses are now MF-only on the Z6. I don't see myself upgrading to a Z6iii anytime soon. I do wish I had dual memory, but I'm surviving without it. The one thing I hate about mirrorless is the pitiful battery life. I'm glad I can attach a power bank and have direct power.

Excellent and insightful discussion on the Z6 lineup and history 👏🏻 I've had all three models, loved the I & II models and the mark III is just a whole different level. The combination of the fast electronic shutter, mechanical shutter, subject tracking options, and amazing video capabilities easily makes it the most versatile body I've ever had. I added the battery grip and it's such an ideal setup. Re: dynamic range - For what it's worth, I shoot a LOT of low-light / high-dr / fast action stage events. Plays, dance, concerts etc. In mixed lighting as well. I'm not seeing ANY real-world difference between the Z6III / Z6II / and Zf. Regardless of chart data. I can pull RAW's straight out of the Z6III, process with basic edits, no noise reduction needed in post, and deliver super clean JPG finals with no fuss. Comes down to knowing your light and how to best utilize a dual-gain sensor.

I have the Z6III, and I think it’s worth it, but I believe the S5IIX is of better value. It has better IBIS, a shutter angle, dual card video recording, and the ability to record to an external SSD. The Z6 III has araw 60K recording, but it may not be as practical as the Lumix.

I kept the Z6ii after the Z9. The Z9 deals with tasks where the Z6ii can’t. I love the tiny size of the Z6ii as a walk around with one prime and one zoom in a small shoulder bag. It is very unlikely I will upgrade to the lovely Z6iii anytime soon. Yes I would like it but I simply don’t really need it. The image quality from the Z6ii is very good indeed. I would rather buy a nice lens or two. If I didn’t have the Z9, I would immediately go to the Z6iii.

I started wading into the mirrorless waters cautiously while still keeping my D4's and F mount lenses and buying a Z6ii earlier his year...When I was convinced that the Z series worked for me, I purged all of my DSLR gear and jumped into the deep end of the pool and bought the Z8......to join the Z6ii....However, the Z8 is so good I always grabbed it because the differences in the bodies so great, I always felt like I missing out. The Z6iii fixed all the issues. Especially the button placement and menu systems......Now the ergonomics are close enough that the Z8/Z6iii are much more enjoyable and allows me to switch between the camera's easily without having to thinking "Hey why isn't this working?" It goes without saying that all of the upgrades are stellar and the performance of the Z6iii allows me to grab either body without fear that I am missing out......Now it's a matter of how many pixels do I need? The Z6iii is a monumental upgrade over its predecessors. For Z8/9 owners looking for 2nd body......The Z6iii transitions seamlessly.....

As usual, a very sensible conversation. Up until July of this year, I had a Z6 and a Z7ii - using the Z6 for faster moving things, specifically air shows. The Z6 was however sub-optimal for airshows due to focusing issues and viewfinder lag etc. I bought the Z6iii to replace the Z6 and it makes a world of difference. The focusing capabilities on fast moving planes is on another level compared to the Z6. I also find the viewfinder is much less laggy with less noticeable blackout between shots in a burst. If it wasn't for the photos of airshows that I like to shoot, the Z6 and Z7ii are perfectly fine cameras that do the job for me for the remaining 97% of situations, such as landscapes and cityscapes. I'm not fussed about 1 vs 2 card slots or video. Cheers from Canada. 🙂

Unless you need 4K 60p, the Z5 is the best camera to buy for hobbyists, beginners, and even vets who're transitioning from DSLR. If you're not shooting sports, or fast moving objects the Z5 is easily the best option especially used. You can enter the real estate market, events market, stock photography market, street, KZbin, etc. Make enough money from it and you'd figure out if you need a Z6iii, Z7ii, or Z8. You might even want the Z30 if all you need is a talking head camera or the Z50ii if you want to just shoot birds. The Z5 would check folks ego at the door.

I have my Z6 since one year now. I had a Nikon D610 which was working well but it is bulky and it doesn't have that WYSIWIG approach of a mirrorless. After trying a Sony APS-C mirrorless, I decided to sell my D610 because I wanted to see my exposure, to have IBIS and focus peaking. Since then, it changed my photography. I have much keeper with the autofocus. High iso are wonderful (I can shoot even with iso 12.800 without a lot of problem, compared to my D610). Seeing also my exposure with manual lenses help me trim it if the camera messes with the right exposure. It feels also sometimes like cheating because it's now so easy to have a good exposure and fantastic focused photos. If you're doing only portrait, landscape, streetphotography and not sport or bird photography, you will be good with this camera. The only thing that I miss is the double card and SD compatibility. Cf express type B is expensive

i went with the ZF for 75% of the price of Z63, happy with it, I rarely do much video and when i do it's in 1080p with the occasional 4k if i need to crop in post. raw video seems great but it'd mess with my workflow and consistency aesthetically. if i want stellar video i'd be looking more at an fx3. it depends what we aim to use the camera for and where the footage will be displayed. good enough for youtube is most use cases. broadcast, another thing imo.

I made it from the Z6 to the Zf (didn't wanted to wait for a Z6 III) and do not regret it, there is nothing in the Z6 III that would give ME a favour as I'm not doing sports or video. The only thing which I really see as a big plus of the whole Z6 family is ergonomics. Without a handle the Zf is effectively not useable with a slightly bigger lens, but I loved to get used to the wheels and buttons. Nevertheless the Z6 has a joystick which is more powerful compared to the cross, and would make a big difference if I would use the camera professionally.

Yes Matthew, it is worth the upgrade. Its best not to purchase gen 1 of any tech. The Z6ii was.... is capable, but it has shortcommings. Not as many as mark 1, but it seemed as though Nikon called it quits on it in 2022. Had the Z6iii been between 32 and 36 megapixels and more focus poinrs, I would have bought before buying a Z8.

As the upgrade path gets ever faster and faster, as camera companies attempt to gain more of the Public’s cash, I think we need to take a step back, meditate or contemplate on what camera upgrade does everybody, really need. The surprising answer is, the most important upgrade would be the P1000 upgrade to a 20MP 2.3 sized sensor instead of the 16MP, 1/2.3 in current stock. Also a lift in software to about D5600 level wouldn’t go astray. I dare say most people with a camera are not Professional photographers and so the enthusiast group being somewhat bigger needs more attention. In the enthusiast sub-group of SuperZoomers there is a fanatical zeal for the Superist Zoomiest cameras possible and we actually want more. Even a Superzoom that “only” goes from 24-1800mm but with better sensor and software, I think would be a huge hit. Now my current Z6(1) is still doing a great job and I’m still happy with it. So, Z6II or Z6III for me will not be happening anytime soon. Cheers Y’All

I have owned all three of the Z6 models, and currently have both the Z6 and Z6III models to complement my Z9. I love the compact size of the Z6 models and find myself often taking the Z6III over the Z9 for that reason. While the Z6III is a bit upgrade AF and video wise, I do not like the flippy screen of the Z6III, and if I could do it over, I would just take the jump up to the Z8, not just for the screen, but to also have the similar controls of the Z9.

In my honest opinion, the Z6III is actually Nikon's gift to the world. For what it has compared to the price, its a no brainer. Nikon peg it at USD 2500, which tremendous value to its owner. If you're preference is landscape, then I opt for the Z7, Z7II, Z8 and the Z9, simply because of resolution of a higher pixel count. The Z6III do achieve great results for landscape. Only if you're the type who likes to pixel peep and need to print large, then obviously the 45 pixel bodies are the ones which could provide that need. Coming from an ex D850 and Z6II owner myself, I would get the Z6III had I not gotten the Z6II 3 years ago. Now, since I'm with the Z8, I'll keep my Z6II as a backup, no need trade it for the Z6III. What is also exciting now is that we have more 3rd party lenses for the Z mount, especially those from Tamron and Viltrox. I'm testing Tamron's 35-150 f2 - 2.8 and I'm amaze at this lens. It is as good as Nikon's native lens and I know in my heart I have to have it. Anyway great video Matt. You're spot on as always on your assessments

Thanks Matt, useful video. If money was no object I would buy the Z6iii with 24-120 zoom (offered as a kit in UK). In the real world I am more likely to consider used kit. Here in the UK, used Z6ii is below £1,000 now, and only a few used Z6iii at £1,000 more. That £1,000 I would want for Z glass. So I will probably wait a while until I can buy used Z6iii body + 1 f4 S zoom + 1 f1.8 S prime + 1 f2/2.8 prime for the same price as a new Z6iii body.

I have a Z6III and I really like it. I have tried the pixel shift several times. It is quite difficult to get a good 96Mp image using it. You need a very well behaved subject, a tripod, a sharp lens, calm conditions, and you either need a fast shutter speed or you need to insert delays between the shots to let the shutter vibrations damp out. But, if you do all of these things, you really can get a much higher resolution image. I like the flippy screen but it does interfere with a right-angle bracket.

Maybe I should have but I just hesitate to spend so much money on a camera when I travel with it, and stay in hostels as well. I got worldwide insurance but that doesn't change my feeling much. And actually, insurance for all this new gear would cost a bit more as well (though not that much more either). AF-wise I believe the Z6 II may still be behind the D750 when it comes to 3D tracking.

You were far better off using Nikon's previous generation of DSLRs. So, I waited for the Z6III, and it's pretty much perfect for my use. I prefer 24mp to 45mp (45mp is great, but the files take up a lot of space and are slower to process) so my Z8 sits unused as a backup. Someday, when I have time, I will use the Z8 for personal wildlife photography. So, for me, the Z6III was the only viable starting point.

Fantastic to hear the Z6III is working so well for you. Fast dogs and horses is action for sure, the Z6III makes sense :)

I'm considering the Z6III, but one important area where the Lumix cams still have the edge is dual card recording, this in invaluable to me for pro work. I've had 3 or 4 cards fail throughout my career, it's rare (15+ years) but it's a gut wrenching feeling that I'd rather avoid. Still, I may opt for the Z6III soon as Lumix seem to be dragging their feet with the flagships.

Shopping for a Z6 to backup the Z8, but KEH and MPB don't publish shutter counts, which makes no sense. I returned an "Excellent" Z6 to MPB because it had 120K shutter count.

MPB sent me a lens with broken focus motors. That says a lot about their grading and testing protocol. You might have better luck on forums like fred miranda or nikonians.

My sports photographer friend has consistently complained about the Z9 EVF (he simultaneously uses the D850 and D4). He just bought the Z6iii on sale (despite my warning that it lacks bird detection) so it will be interesting to hear his thoughts on the difference he sees in the EVF's. Unfortunately "content creators" seem to be the only users that matter any more so any camera less than $3500 will be plagued with the cursed flippy screen. It will be interesting to see if Sony puts their beautiful multi-angle screen on the A7V (I doubt it). I am old enough that I use the LCD to "get low" and that flippy screen has led me to abandon my Zf, which I love in every other way, in favor of the Fujifilm X100VI, which has a screen that doesn't constantly annoy me.

Was very keen on seeing the spec's and perhaps getting one - then it came out and the price and improvements were a bit off: For its' place in my kit. It actually pushed me to use my Z7 (and to a less degree the Z6ii) more. The new Z50ii comes closer to being a better fit in my kit but the timing is a bit off (Christmas, woodworking tool needs etc.). Now, if in the mean time Nikon comes out with a Zfc mark 2 with color choices (based on the Z50ii) I'd probably be on it like stink! I'm pretty fortunate to be very well kitted out in gear right now with no real needs. Just some minor wants. I still think Nikon is missing an opportunity to bring out digital versions of their old range finders.

I just bought a Z6ii as my first camera because of the Black Friday price. $1400 felt more reasonable for a novice interested in travel and family photos vs the Z6iii at $2300. Maybe by the time I get the hang of photography, the next best thing will be a Z6iv hahah

All three are great cameras. But as a professional, I don't need any new cameras from Nikon at the moment (I have 2 Z 9s, among other things). I would like other high-speed lenses such as the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S or later a NIKKOR Z 24mm f/ 1.2 S, this would be much more important for me, but unfortunately we don't hear anything about it from Nikon. After some important innovations in 2023, unfortunately they haven't brought anything new to the market this year for my professional needs. I hope that things will be different next year 😂

If you are shooting kids or events where you have to capture moments..yes get only the Z6iii .. Z6ii misses focus in 7 out of 10 frames.. Now i shoot only 2 shots instead of the 10 i used to because I know I have it in focus. If you are shooting slow subjects.. posed models.. macro..landscapes..it doesn't matter which one you get..in fact you should get the older camera because the files are less noisy..more dynamic range ...

Great, informative video! (as always). As a keen amateur, I have the Z50i, Z6i (plus others😁). I am thinking of the Z7ii instead of the Z50ii or Z6iii; more detail(?) ability to crop. I shoot everything wildlife wise (birds, deer, flowers etc) plus planes. Would love to know your opinion. Thanks for the channel

@bobamarmstrong
@bobamarmstrong 2 күн бұрын
If your lenses have an internal focus, they will work much better with mirrorless. Also, it is the same with manual lenses because you gain IBIS, real time exposure and focus peaking. But if you have f mount lenses with screw drive motor for focusing, there is no adapter made by Nikon so you'll have to focus manually

If you capture still or slow moving subjects, portraits, or landscape with higher detail of 45mp, Z7 II. If you want to capture faster moving subjects or have the better autofocus system with slightly better dynamic range over the Z6III, and a different style camera, ZF. If you want the modern camera body to capture very fast moving subjects, better autofocus system, the best video features, all around great camera, the Z6III. I wouldn't consider the Z6II due to the lack of performance of the autofocus system and your budget is $2,000. I own the ZF and Z7II and both are great cameras to shoot with. I use the Z7II for portraits and landscapes. I use the ZF for everything else. To me, the ZF is more like a Z6 2.5 with a retro style body.

Again n again Nikon end's up by scoring self goals. Whilst it's customer's are waiting for the replacement of D500 with a APSC Z body with 33MP/ 45MP Sensor, dual card slots ( CFExpress SD), EnEl 15c battery. Instead what we see is Z6III, Z50II bodies !!!! It sure is a let down... Nikon's competitor's are all the way laughing away to the bank with their APSC bodies Ex Canon R7, Fuji etc etc.... Wake up Nikon before it's too late!!!!

The old dynamic range nonsense. KZbin viewers love a good story to repeat, in the hope that somebody will believe it's true. Photography is not about examining specs. There again, I learned on an Olympus OM2n that had two watch batteries to power the meter. :-)

@ it cant compete with a micro four thirds camera in some key areas of image quality , z6ii is better in this regard also so in my eyes its a fail. Its not better than some apsc cameras in anything so why pay full frame prices? Image quality , especially dynamic range is very very important. Great features alone dont do the trick. You dont need 120frames slomo or 6k video everyday but blown out highlights are a no no always. All of the competitors are better in this regard.
