I tried to redo this watercolor painting of a cute store we saw with Kana in Karuizawa last fall. We went there for some Ghibli inspired location hunting and I took many photos of interesting retro buildings.
I painted this one, once already during a KZbin live stream that you can watch here:
• LIVE Sketching a shop ...
I also uploaded this painting to my Society6 account if you want a print!
society6.com/m...
Tools:
- Mijello 26 colors watercolors set
- Waterford white 300g HOT pressed watercolor paper
- Blackwing pencil
- Conté à Paris Pierre Noire 2B Sketching Pencil
- Color pastels for finishing textures
Music by Epidemic Sound.

I know you said you wouldn't use that black pencil for this type of painting again, but I like how it brought parts of the building into the foreground with the dark contrast. I also think it's cute when you say you're using a bigger brush to avoid temptation to add too many details - because I always consider your paintings amazingly detailed :D

Hello, Mateusz, Thank you for a longer video, it is a lot more educational that way. I hope you could make more content in that format in the future. I am going to paint tomorrow because this video was so inspirational. I got some cheap watercolors to get started. I really liked how you did not paint in too many layers - any part of the painting was touched with one or two watercolors, yet the overall image is so realistic and communicates as a whole. Thank you again for the video!!!!

Hello, I like the painting! Thanks, also the unusual video length is nice to capture more of your fine work. About the watercolors, did you use the pure pigments series of Mijello? How do you like that brand? Some people complain about their lack of flowing on the paper, I would like to know your idea about that. Have a nice one!
@mattjabbar
@mattjabbar 5 жыл бұрын
Yes I used the pure pigment set, I quite like the paints so far but I have to test them more to really get the feel of them. So far they seem very good with high saturation.

Takie może głupie pytanie, ale czemu teraz ostrzyłeś ołówek nożykiem, podczas gdy wcześniej używałeś automatycznej temperówki :)? Chodzi o to żeby odsłonięty rysik był dłuższy, czy jak?
@mattjabbar
@mattjabbar 5 жыл бұрын

Hello!! I have a question, how do you maintain consistency when it comes to doing pencil lines? Its really hard to retain a certain level of smoothness in lines when it comes to using watercolor paper because its rough, and using different levels of pressure to produce darker lines and different grades of pencil makes it even harder, we have a similar approach in doing scenery but im more on pencil lines rather than ink, im an avid fan!
@nathanhungate2552
@nathanhungate2552 5 жыл бұрын
The paper you use really matters. Hot press paper will be smooth whereas cold press paper will have a toothy texture
@mattjabbar
@mattjabbar 5 жыл бұрын
I tend to use cold pressed paper most of the time so it’s not such a big problem. Id differs a lot on the paper type and also how soft your pencil is I think.
