As someone who has taken classical piano lessons as a youth for ~8 years, I can read notation, play Chopin, Bach Inventions, and all that - BUT this is such foreign territory....jazz, soul, improvisation. This is a beautiful and malleable art while classical is so strict. People think because we classical people can play piano, we can do this. NOPE. Matt has said he can't read notation. I would trade my sight reading skills in a minute to be able to improvise. What's more, it also feels like we classically trained folks are handcuffed to NOT be able to do this. Neo Soul and jazz concepts feel like an answer to a question we can't figure out how to ask because we classical folks have played other peoples music all our career. The only embellishment we add are dynamics, rubato, and phrasing. After that it's just other peoples chords and melodies.. Hard to explain why it's so difficult. Being a classical pianist is like knowing how to read a book. Being an improvisor is like being able to AUTHOR a book.

Love how you break it down. Visually easy to see. Need to tell you about a soprano sax player I once met in college. We were at City College of New York taking an improvisation class with John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet. The guy played circles around the entire class. One day Prof Lewis asked him why he was taking huis class and the sax player said he didn't know how to read music and wanted to start from scratch so he could understand what he was playing. Prof Lewis said there are 2 players. One's who wants to learn to play and the other is one who knows how to play. He then told the sax player not to let not knowing how to read music stop him from pursuing a musical career. He told him he was the most talented musician he had ever met and should be proud he had such a God sent gift. I mention that cause you mentioned that you are self trained and don't know the correct names sometimes. I say you are (and this is speaking from a guy who is retired but has 50 years playing as a pro) you are phenomenal. Your playing is so fluid and your ideas all sound from the heart. Going to save the chord names and play them in the new future. Great to learn a new skill. Even though I am not a piano player I do play piano mostly to accompany myself singing. These enhancements may open a new path for me in my singing. Hey I'm 69 and don't perform publicly anymore but every now and then I play for my guests. I young 16 year heard me singing recently told me he thought an Angel was in the room singing when I was playing the piano. haha Guess I still got it...

Thank you for your contribution to Jamiroquai, Mr. Johnson. Jamiroquai’s rhythm section has never sounded better in my opinion. Derrick has been with Jay since ROTSC and is absolutely the driving force behind the “Jamiroquai sound”. However. When yourself, Rob and Paul joined Jamiroquai, the music was elevated to a status never before achieved. To put it succinctly, all of you gave Jamiroquai a refined and mature sound. The Jamiroquai band is “tighter” than ever before. Seeing you describe in this video how you put your sounds together is a clear explanation of why Jamiroquai is where they are today.
