I played classical piano for 13 years and while it was fun and challenging learning different pieces, it ended up feeling like homework. I stopped playing for 2 or so years and only started again after watching some of your funk keys tutorials and wanted to try out all those licks and techniques. You've made me fall in love with playing piano again I'm so much more of a confident and flexible player now. Seriously cant thank you enough for this content, you're actually a legend.

These such amazing practical videos. I've been playing piano professionally for years in clubs, bars and hotels and this lesson should be given to any keyboard player needing clear and effective direction to play and make money in modern music. You are a great teacher and a generous musician. Thanks and blessings.

Wow! Just wow! Even as a complete beginner ( just bought a workstation for my 60th- after years on the tenor Sax) I find this inspiring. I can relate so much through my Sax journey. I totally agree on finding the tonal centre and playing in one key (rather than following the Chord changes). I found this totally inspiring. Enthusiasm doesn’t diminish as you get old. (Referring to my age and others like me). What a brilliant and natural teacher.

This is invaluable. Been in and out of playing. Done some composing, rock, blues, classical etc, but never gotten to the point where I can solo and elaborate. My dream to sit in a bar/restaurant and entertain people, and be able to do solos, without getting boring. And of course play with a band. There's this guy, Carli Muñoz, who played with lots of wellknown artists, Wilson Pickett, Association, George Benson - and my favorite band the Beach Boys. Now he mostly entertains people with jazz music etc in his bar in Puerto Rico. Wonderful! So thanks a lot for your videos! Awesome! Now I have some practising to do....😊😉👍👏🎵🎼🎹

Great improv Matt. As a smooth jazz saxophonist, I practice in my recording studio and learn my own licks. I come up with a groove on the keyboard, add bass and drums and play along with it. I hear a lick in my head and sing it. I then practice the lick until I can play it. I usually record while I am practicing and put together melodic solos this way. Once I have it under my belt, I will learn it in all keys. Really expands my playing and has helped me develop my own style and sound. Thanks for your continued inspiration. Luv your sound. You badass man...

Master your own style … based on your personality ….pace yourself …build excitement . I,like that approach .. really good food for thought . Inspirational. . I’m an acoustic guitar / mandolin blues player who can only play keys in Cm so I kept away from keyboards ( which I love) but hearing your words ( and your soloing over altered chords) has helped me decide . I really need to get myself a decent keyboard and go for it … thanks for giving me the push forward I needed.

This episode is so important to me as I can do the theory and chords and wanted to get the gist on soloing. All good I thought until 3:20 onwards. Matt, I don''t know if you're still reading comments after a year you uploaded this video, but I'm 58 years old, I play keys since I was 4 or 5 and learned a lot of music theory in those years, the original blues scale has also 7 notes, seen from the major scale of natural minor scale the 3th and 7th tone are between the flat and major. Other influences is Irish music who used the seconde mode of the major scale. for the blues scale listen to Rapsody in Blue and the Irish just listen to Clanned. But don't worry, I still learn a lot from you!

This is such highly valuable and useful stuff, Matt... I've never been much of a jazz musician, and always thought (or rather: was told) I had to study jazz to be able to play like this - extending chords and building solos on thát. There's a lot to learn from, and I will. Cheers 👍😉🙏
