While not a Capcom game, this whole game kind of reminds me of an old PS2 game called "Spy Fiction" that had a troubled directionless production and resulted in a game that tried to be Metal Gear Solid at first and then turns into something else.

honestly I wish capcom had the guts to ignore the fan backlash. Sometimes fans just can't see the full picture until they have it. Imagine if Wind Waker changed it's art style in response to the backlash from western fans. That's not to say "never listen to fans" but, you know, sometimes they're wrong.

That Saturday morning cartoon aesthetic with the playable commercials sounded really fun and at the very least it would have been a lot more memorable than the final product ended up being. Capcom is such a critical company to the game industry. It has shining examples of both what to do and what NOT to do when making video games. I feel like anyone looking to get into game design or starting their own game studio should study up on their Capcom 101.

I mean the Capcom fans didn’t like a game that was on a console most of them didn’t take it seriously anyway. So tbh I don’t understand the need to throw out the unique original ideas for things that were generically popular just to appease a demographic that wasn't the target. They took an IP that could’ve been a cult hit and made it less known than ninja breadman, good job Capcom.

Spyborg's original Saturday Morning Cartoon themes and aesthetics sounds so incredibly interesting and engaging then what they changed to, it's honestly a shame. If they had stuck to the original vision, I doubt it would have been an instant hit but I would instead see it become something more akin to a cult classic like Psychonauts that would have racked up fame and goodwill over time.

another comparison would be wind waker (kinda). At release it got bashed for the cartoony artistic direction and slow pace leading to a slow sales start (although it did reach a decent level of sales). However it's had a reevaluation that's been happening with a lot of games from that era and has become somewhat of a success story (the somewhat being nintendo continuing to shoot themselves in the foot and not releasing the HD edition on a MORE POPULAR CONSOLE!).
@angelthingjenny

Oh man, who would've guessed that overreacting to backlash from people that aren't necessarily your target audience and crushing all the interesting or unique ideas out of a game with like a year to launch would result in a rushed, bland game? Honestly I think the biggest mistake they made was presenting it at Captivate first, and making it stand toe to toe with the legacy franchises. If it had just, say, been a quiet extra on Nintendo's show floor that year, the idea of it "not being capcom enough" might have been alleviated more.
@HAZRE.
@HAZRE. 2 жыл бұрын
They should've stuck with the original theme. It sounded like it had real character and was unique, especially in comparison to its finished product. This is why you can't pander too much to players' or their opinions, because often the loudest are the short-sighted minority. I don't see what's so bad with having a game for a younger crowd, because that crowd will become the adults that grew up with Spiro or Rachet and Clank, etc. and will be loyal to a great game for years to come. Seems like Capcom shot themselves in the foot with this one. A little less micromanaging and a little more faith and they might have had a fleshed-out franchise with a dedicated fanbase.

But our fans--who probably aren't your target audience anyway--want it to be darker and more combat focused. Let's dump all that lighthearted character nonsense." "Um... okay, we'll just throw away all that work and focus solely on the brawling. Does this work?" "Great! But now it looks like a boring budget title, and frankly, we aren't interested anymore. We're cutting way back on our investment and we expect you to deliver whatever build you've got ASAP. Looking forward to working with you again!"

I've been catching up with the What Happened series for a little while now (I've seen around 80 or so episodes so far, and I'm hoping to be fully caught up by late March/early April), and-real talk-it's become my new favorite series on KZbin! I love absolutely everything about it...the information, the humor, the entertainment value, the editing, the skeletal avatar...all of it! I just cannot help but find myself coming back to see all the episodes I've missed over the past four years, as well as all of the new ones as they go live. They are as entertaining as they are informative, and it clearly shows that you and your team put a ton of effort into these videos (with great success, I might add). Needless to say, I look forward to continuing to catch up with all the What Happened episodes I have yet to see, rewatch the whole series likely later this year, and check out each new episode as they come our way. You have most certainly earned my subscription and my patronage, Matt...keep up the fantastic work!

So to summarize, Capcom: 1. Stripped out the main thing that made the game unique, forcing a bland samey world (which was then torn apart by critics because it wasn't unique). 2. Attempted to extort free labor from the studio by withholding their funding. 3. Barely advertised the game. 4. Went behind the back of devs (who were still on schedule), to ship a beta version of the game and completely kneecap the project. I'd agree that the failures of games around this time contribute to Capcom's current incredibly safe business style, but this was 100% on them. They took a promising young studio and fought them at every step of the way. Capcom killed Bionic Games and they killed them hard.

Capcom USA did do some online promotion for Syborgs beyond the mini-series, and it was really weird. They tried to hype it up as a sort of modern-day return to the old-school beat-em-ups of yore by talking about all the stuff that Spyborgs carried over... Like an elevator level. Yes, Capcom USA literally used "Every great brawler has an elevator level!" as a way to help promote Spyborgs.
@Rangaisia
@Rangaisia 2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, a lot of classic brawlers did have elevator sections, all classic Final Fights had one, as did all the classic Street of Rage games (SoR2 had like 3 elevator sections). Though not all great brawlers necessarily had one, Capcom's own Warriors of Fate for instance.

I remember buying this game shortly after it's release only because I stumbled across it in a store and thought it looked cool. I still think it's pretty fun and I like all the playable characters, but the mixed score is very accurate. I keep mixing up Spyborgs with Disney's Spectrobes franchise at first glance; their covers both have that "generic sci-fi action surrounded in blue" aesthetic. Speaking of which, Disney's original output in that era of gaming is ripe for exploration. The aforementioned Spectrobes, that Clue homage Guilty Party... imagine how things would be if they still had enough faith to pursue unique game-first properties like that.

I never got this game, but I definitely remember it in the lead up to its release. The Wii was quite starved for quality third-party stuff even by Nintendo console standards, so even the faintest whiff of something that had even the slightest hope of being decent would catch the attention of Nintendo stans of the time (myself included). The promise of a new IP from Capcom got people excited and they were really hoping for something that was a bit darker in tone (something that the Wii was also lacking in). The disappointment at the initial reveal makes a lot more sense in that context, but the backlash was kind of a shame since it seems the final product was much worse off for its resulting shift in tone.

"It was originally more cartoonish but it then was changed to be more gritty and serious" this basically defines so many things around the late 2000s early 2010s. No wonder Indie games eventually exploded when it seemed like all AAA developers (sans Nintendo) basically forgot the "game" in the word "videogames". It's like both people playing and the guys in charge of decisions for games just forgot to have fun because they wanted to be the next Call of Duty, God of War or whatever.

The original concept for Spyborgs sounds more interesting than the game we got but it's unfortunate that it didn't turn out that way. Almost reminds me a lot of Insomniac's Overstrike before it got changed to Fuse when EA's test audience didn't respond to it. That game deserves it's own What Happened? episode. Oh neat, the ad for this game in Nintendo Power was my first introduction to Capcom alongside one of their Mega Man 10 articles.

Picked up this game a couple of months ago and had fun with what I played. Reminds me of the X-Men Legends/Marvel Ultimate Alliance games with its mechanics.

That quote at the end is so cheesy good it just radiates earnest hype. Love it.

Not appreciating the subliminal NoHo sass. But I love how the editor put the studio’s sign on a restaurant

The first version sounds like it could probably be fun, nothing groundbreaking but a fun little title.

Thank you Capcom fans from the 2000's, you're why we can't have funny Capcom games anymore, good job getting excited over Bionic Commando instead

I know Matt doesn't do mobile, but if someone could Patron an episode on Dragalia Lost now that it's ending, that would be cool.

The problem with Spyborgs announcement and reveals, fans were expecting 90s-early 2000s Capcom quality but, Capcom showed off a game in line with late 2000s-2010s era Capcom. If only Capcom fans at the time knew the horror of things to come.

13:17 Never would I have ever guessed you'd bring up MySims Agents of all things. On a related note: MySims Agents is really good and you should definitely try it.

I remember buying it for $10-$15 a few months after release but wound up selling it (along with a bunch of other games as I needed the money to pay bills) a few years later without having played it. It was released in a time where I think every game dev was trying to make & release the next Gears of War, Wii Fit/Wii Sports, CoD Modern Warfare, Guitar Hero/Rock Band type game be it in art direction, gameplay function, genre, gimmick, etc. Spyborgs got caught in the shuffle of that console era and never stood a chance.

Honestly the original game sounded a lot better then what we got. A Saturday Morning esque platformer with a focus on multiple gameplay styles sounds great. I wish we got that game instead

Bionic: Makes a game that's deliberately tongue and cheek and a send-off to saturday morning cartoons with graphics and gameplay tailor-made to the Wii's audience Capcom fans: It's not enough like Devil May Cry!
