Matt, it is so funny listening to you talk about the foam cannon discussion and watching people. I’ve thought to myself for YEARS that I was the only one that got super irritated at people doing anything and doing it in a way I deemed not the correct way. To be honest, most people just don’t give a crap or atleast not as much as me and I constantly have to remind myself of that.

Same here brother… I’m a Tesla Nerd and I cringe every time I see a Tesla and the owner didn’t install the factory license plate frame correctly so that the screw tabs are behind the plate and unseen. I want to carry a screwdriver and fix it for them myself. Maybe Matt can recommend a good Snap On Phillips head?

Matt, that car is stunning in person. I was so fortunate to visit OGHG last Thursday as well as a quick stop by your home garage. Thank you for allowing us to see the finished garage and lista cabinets installed. The parts I picked up on Thursday at OGHG will get me a bit closer to my vision of a great space to enjoy my cars and friends. Thanks again to Daniel and Matt for the time.

Matt, another thing to take into account is that some people will likely never be able to make those kinds of purchases kind of by choice. My fiancé is a teacher, on her own she may never afford to buy a house. However I’m an engineer and make a lot of money at a young age. She can make the choice to “not eat chips” but she won’t be able to make the choice to make something of herself as a teacher to the point that she can buy a house, or in our case, spend a lot of money on what is essentially a big toy, the way I am/will be able to. In other words, the 40 year old guy making 80K a year doing sometime he absolutely loves will probably never buy the E92 M3 he’s wanted for 10 years. Different situations/perspectives matter, you can’t really equate not being fit and making bad dietary decisions to not being in a situation where you can afford an expensive toy

I also wash in the garage for the last 3 years after sealing the concrete. The sealing helps so the water isn't absorbed by the concrete. When I replaced the garage door with an insulated one this made a huge difference. I use a portable ac and open house door when needed as well. Perfect temp year round.

Matt, your thoughts on form are so right! I was a full time athlete my whole life and always found myself amazed at the general standard of people. From the smallest things such walking, carrying things, moving or even worse people who can’t swim! People are generally so disconnected to their bodies. I do think doing anything athletic growing up is so important. Follow up….. I’m so glad I’ve found your channel. I completely resonate with so much that you say. You’re whole brand is spot on. for the rod bearing conversation, there definitely is plenty of evidence out there to support the claims. as for your specific examples of e92’s… well they just haven’t been driven enough to be effected by that issue. in most engines, rod bearings should last the life of the car, in s54’s, s65’s and s85’s that just isn’t the case. the tolerances are extremely tight, the 10w60 viscosity also accelerates the wear on cold starts. there’s a lot more to it than someone just saying “you need to change them”

I think excuses are being made for the supposed need. One being lack of maintenance on a sticky old version of the car. You'd really have to work at to keep an older, high mileage car nice.

Honestly I think the "beater" car comes from owning and living with that car for a long time until it becomes closer to just another car you own even if you like it a lot, then you would start letting go. I found out that it will be more nerve-racking to drive when it's new and doesn't have built its "personality" with a bunch of scuffs and marks everywhere. After a few years these imperfections become part of the car and you can still fix the most apparent things anyways.

There is literally thousands of documented cases of extreme bearing wear on cars from 60-160K miles. In most cases it was caught and done in time, in others it resulted in catastrophic failure. It all comes down to how the car was maintained and since most people that own these cars bought them used, there is really no way to know if it was maintained properly. With all that being said, I pulled my bearings out at 60K miles on my 2012 and they were in great shape. So the bottom line is - no, you do not have to replace rod bearings on an e9x M3, however it is very possible to spin one if they are worn prematurely as a result of improper maintenance

Matty rod bearings in e9x m3s are a real issue. Think of it like this, its a ferrari level engine build by bmw. Basically saying the quality of materials are not the same and the tolerances of the engine are very minuet. It usual happens to engines with higher mileage than that m3 might ever see but its an issue.
@ObsessedGarage
@ObsessedGarage Жыл бұрын
My problem is that everyone just says that, so we are supposed to take it as gospel. "You should do the rod bearings because everyone said so." I just don't do well with that kind of thinking. I'm not saying it's out of the realm of possibility that it could go wrong, but I don't buy it.
@NoName-st6zc
@NoName-st6zc Жыл бұрын
@@ObsessedGarage Rod Bearings are indeed a known issue on the S65 and with saying "known issue" i don't mean it's gospel that came from a bunch of dorks who panicked because a single S65 blew up at one point. Here comes the twist on this whole thing though : it's a problem that's usually only occuring on somewhat high mileage cars (usually anywhere between 100-170k kilometers) and even then there's no guarantee that it'll happen whatsoever because the entire rod bearing problematic is very highly dependent on the car's life. See : if you're the person that, like yourself, puts barely any mileage on the car and additionally, again : like yourself, also barely any engine load then yeah, chances are actually really good that you will never ever have problems with the rod bearings. However, the other side of the spectrum is having an E9x M3 as a tracktool which is obviously a scenario where the engine is constantly under heavy load. If you're then additionally putting some solid mileage on the car, especially track exclusive mileage, you will need to take care of these road bearings or they will be gone and on such extreme usage scenarios you better don't wait the usual 100k kilometers before changing them. I can totally see where you're coming from though. You have a rather sceptical nature and that's fine, i'm that way myself. However, look at it this way. Around the Nürburg Ring there are a lot of BMW Tracktool Garages (for the lack of a better word) like Team Schirmer for example and they all recommend somewhat frequent rod bearing replacements. Now you could argue like "yeah but they are mechanics, of course they'll recommend that because that's how they're getting your money". Well, fine. I'll give you that. However, here comes where that argument fails. Garages like Team Schirmer still have a bunch of cars with S65 engines themselves, obviously, and believe me when i say that they monitor their own cars very closely and guess what they'll do when they start to see excessive wear and tear on their rod bearings, they'll change them of course. Nobody pays them labor for changing the rod bearings on their own cars and nobody pays the rod bearings for their own cars either. It's their own time and it's their own investment and you can rest assure that they'd be rather working on customer cars than changing rod bearings on their own cars because some people on the internet said it'd be a smart thing to do. No. They do that because they monitor their cars and therefore know when it's time. This knowledge is then of course directly transfered to their customer base, resulting in even more frequent rod bearing changes than on their own cars which is simply because they don't want to take any chances on customer cars. The bottom line is : the rod bearing topic isn't gospel, it's an actual issue that's well monitored and well documented by the upper echelon of BMW Enthusiast Garages. However, as i've mentioned before : it's very highly dependent on how the car gets used and in your case : the car gets barely used anyways, especially under high engine loads so yeah, no reason for you to be too concerned about it anytime soon as long as you're doing very regular or premature oil changes and don't stomp on it everytime when the car is cold. Depending on how much mileage and load you put on the car over the next years i'd just have them checked in like anywhere between 3-6 years from now by a reputable BMW Enthusiast Garage and might as well directly change them anyways. If i was you i just wouldn't want to take chances either, certainly not on such a unicorn like you got.

I love the quote many good attorneys use... "Objection, assumes facts not in evidence." Where's the data that says these statements are factual? Rod bearings, etc. It's a great "check" when you find yourself or others jumping to a conclusion without sufficient data/evidence, which happens way too often.
