I'm a hobby potter. I have spent the last year trying to replicate the process of making mimbres bowls ( classic and post classic period) with only materials from the mimbres valley. Has anyone ever suspected one location for production? Or white slip origin? Knowing pottery chemistry to some degree, I have some viable suspicions , but I do wonder if anyone has solved this question already?

The Thornburgs, who made very good Mimbres pottery replicas said there was one source for the clay or for the slip (not sure which). However, Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) of over 5000 sherds from the Mimbres region has shown conclusively that the pottery was made in many different places both within and outside the Mimbres Valley.

@@archandhist thank you ! And yes I am familiar With the Thornburg's work. Pots recovered from the lower Mimbres Nan ranch area hold my interest most so I will assume to be authentic as possible I will collect clay and minerals in that area . A dear friend of mine use to own the kipp ruin , I have collected some white clay from near there but it's not exactly the best. Anyway it's been a challenge unlocking some of the secrets !
