We had neglected 1/3 of our back yard during the house remodel and it became a staging material area, fire wood storage, rock storage, and morass of yard tools, boats, iron fencing and general crap. It was not a useful space and sort of a black eye behind the house, so after finishing the house remodel (mostly finishing) we decided to make it a space where we could both entertain (a fire pit with benches) and have a separated dedicated space for my forge.
We had to haul the junk out, remove dirt, put in a weed barrier, bring in and compact rock and build a couple go gabion-style reclaimed cedar benches.
