The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle.The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts.If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

​@@mykarma0011 Google "insolation map". That will tell you how "sunny" it is where you live. If you have basic math skills, you can actually calculate the upper limit of what you can get with your rooftop solar. PVs typically operate at like 25% efficiency, I want to say.

It covers my electricity bills for 90% of the year and I'm in NY in an area that gets more Grey skies then Seattle which is known for its dreary weather. I financed most of it and my payment matched my electric bill. However with Covid everything went up in price including electricity (about 25% increase) and now I'm saving money. It should add value to my house, the roof under the panels last longer as they aren't exposed to the sun, and honestly I think it looks pretty decent as 90% of my garage roof is covered with all black panel/grid. My only concern is in the winter the system doesn't have a melt feature so snow can stay on the panels and not generate. I have since gotten a rubber roof rake to clear them but a melt feature would have been nice

We had this installed a few years ago. Our underlayment was shot so needed to be reroofed. I got 4 bids on reroofing with new underlayment but with my existing 25 yr old roof tiles put back down. When we looked at the Tesla option it was a no brainer. We will realize enough cost savings that the roof will pay for itself in 12-14 years. And it only takes 4 years payback to get to what the traditional re-roofers price was. And it's a brand new roof adding resale value. Very happy with our 8.5K system and no electrical bills (So. That is probably why they have generating panels and non-generating panels. Use the non-generating panels around penetrations and they can be handled the same as regular metal roofing panels. Try to get all of the penetrations at the same level and just install a couple of rows of non-generating panels. That way if the roof is smaller, all of the other panels can be generating panels.

With 25 years in the solar panel industry not one single manufacture of this technology has ever survived and there are many many homeowners who have tried this technology and have ran into problems and are unable to resolve them or claim warranty. I would never touch it even though solar pays 100% of my income for the last 25 years.

As a installer of this product I can tell you I’ve broken 3 tiles of all size’s during installation. It is tempered glass so hitting the edges together will break them and accidentally stepping on a top clip will also make them explode. All in all I do think they install pretty easily and look nice when completed

Pete, you’re a bit cynical. With all early adopters of new technology, There are always unknown issues. Costs of purchase and issues of longevity are unknowable. Ranges of cost are 3-4 times the cost of standing seam metal.

The problem is everyone having these independent systems connected to the grid, and they want to because they always want the grid as a backup and/or they're too cheap to put in a system big enough to meet their needs to be complete off grid, this causes chaos in the total system grid. The electrical companies have an extremely difficult task of keeping the grid operating at the correct frequency, 60hz in the USA. As supply and demand changes throughout the day, they must adjust output. With everyone having an input like this, the amount of chaos significantly increases and makes the entire grid more unstable. Plus, who pays for the upkeep of the grid once everyone decides to do this? This will cause electricity to get more expensive in the future.

I tried to work with Tesla here in California for a year between 2021 - 2022. They had a lot of issues to iron out. Their customer support all had full voicemail boxes, and constant turn over of staff. After about 6 months of silence, I went with another product. But it's great to see them on that roof! Do you live in commiecalifornia? Depends on your state and/or your electric supplier. You can go completely off grid. But in many areas if you want to "sell back" your electricity back into their system, you have to shut down when the power goes out.

As an Architect and someone that just finished building a custom home, this roof is super awesome.....for those that can afford it. Our roof we installed is a high-end concrete flat tile, we priced a tesla roof, and it was 4 times the cost of the tile roof. With that kind of price increase it really is just for those that want the bragging rights or truly have money to burn for the new cool tech. I think it will still be a decade or more before you see this type of roof incorporated into everyday home construction. Don't forget, you don't just have the cost of the roof that's 4 times more, but then you need the power walls as well.

@@InfluentialStudios We could never ROI per our estimates. We would never save enough power to offset the cost of the Tesla solar roof. With a 20 year excepted production lifespan, we would never ROI before the panel production was too low and needed replacement. The Tesla roof might have a 30+ "roof" warranty but the panels start degrading production the moment they are installed. By 20 years you are already in the 30% production range. Cost of entry is still too high for most consumers.

I'm building a new custom home in GA and wanted to get the Tesla Solar roof. The math just didn't work out--and I'm a retired accountant. Then there was the short supply and not enough installers to contend with. The roof plus the Powerwalls wouldn't start saving me money until after I'm dead. In some states, electricity is just too cheap for this version of the solar roof too compete. Perhaps in 10 years the cost will make more sense. I agree, it just for those that want the bragging rights.

Had to replace the roof, and it ended up costing us about what metal would have, or twice asphalt (after incentives and insurance payment). The ROI changes every year. We originally thought it was ~15yrs. Last Fall, we got a software update for the batteries, and now it looks like our ROI is cut to ~7yrs. Depends on energy prices, and if you have an EV etc. That's not factoring in gas savings and future energy savings improvements. It also felt like an opportunity we couldn't pass up on, and was worth it for style reasons. They've also hiked the price since then, and people have much larger and more complicated roofs than ours.

I just read a story a few days ago about power grids nationally that are at capacity for people connecting their solar to the grid. People took out loans and can't hook up their solar panels to the grid. Over 10,000 homes waiting to connect to grid. This set up is amazing, off grid.

So cool, we are currently in the preparation stage of installing 15 kwh of Tesla solar panels and 3 powerwall 3's in our Nashville area home along with 1 Span distribution panel. You can come come take a look when it is being installed this summer if you're in the area.

What about costs? This type of system could easily cost $120,000 plus to install and with the tax credit that drops to $84,000. Let's say the electric bill is $500 a month and these generate 100%. That is a 14 year payout and this does not include additional insurance or other costs. That is considering that the house faces the correct position for the panels. I had 2 people come by and give me basic solar estimates lately. The 1st one was honest and we crunched the numbers to find out that I would be paying $258.00 per month for 20 years to save $208.00 per month in electrical costs. That leaves me $50 a month negative over the costs. The 2nd one came by and tells me they can generate 100% or my elecricity and we have a 400 amp service. He wanted to put 60 400 watt panels all on my house on every direction. Then told me it would generate $500 per month in electricity and would costs $260 to pay at 20 years. The guy was a snake oil salesman who wanted me to sign now and worry later. These are the people who give solar a bad name. Either it is going to be a good investment or the rates will be so cheap that it will not be a payback in the time expected, simply like that. I am an EC who spent $15,000 on a Skystream 3.7 back in 2010 and they went out of business in 2014. Now that 15k investment has generated at the most $2500 in electricity and now it is broke down and they are gone. The worst investment I have made in a while. There are stories out there everywhere that people are buying solar because of promises which do not get fulfillled. Don't be afraid to say no to solar scams. If your rates are around 10 cent per kwh it will be hard to generate the spent money back.

My guess is this contraption with all the Power Walls and generators is $250000. From what I’ve seen the Power Walls and solar make since in Cali where the market is messed up, but not so much here in Texas. The Power Walls will need to be replaced in 10 years at most, $100000 and some labor today. You’ll have to do that 2 times before the roof starts to slip according to the 25 year warranty. Then do you replace the working tiles on the roof or the whole thing that cost 3 to 4 times a standing seam metal roof?

How long will it take to recoup $350,000 in electric bills. At 30 years that is $972.22 per month for electricity. Do they really think they are going to pay that much for electricity for 30 years? And this is if the system last for 30 years.

I had these panels installed in August 2020. But it's nothing compared to this. I've only got 6.43kW and one PowerWall. But it's still awesome. I'm close to breaking even - meaning zero electricity costs over the year with one Tesla MY charging daily from it. I'm estimating a payback in about 14 years but that includes the cost of replacing a defective roof that needed replacement anyways. Plus I don't buy gasoline. The one negative in So. CA is because there's no rain for most of the year, the beautiful black glass panels get covered in dust over time. The little rainfall barely ever washes it off and there's always a brown line across the bottom edge of each roof tile. That's noticeable from close up but not from the street.

Solar roof estimate was more than double what we ended up paying for a reroof, 9.8kwh of modules and 27kwh of energy storage. Also, our power company limits the amount of PV you can have connected to their grid. I've seen a few solar roofs installed in my town, it looks like a shiny black plastic roof. Tesla was supposed to produce several types/looks but never did.

Solar roof is always going to be more expensive and less effective than the alternatives. Placing solar panels behind glass panels inherently reduces the efficiency. Not to mention that these are hooked up to string inverters rather than better performing micro inverters or power optimizers. You’re looking at a product that requires many more panels to perform at the same level. It’s much better for everyone to use metal roofs and and attach regular solar panel setups, or even better we can utilize solar farms that are cheaper per kW.

i was a crew lead with tesla worked for them for 5 years . its a very cool product. The product is designed well for the most part. I will say though I would never have tesla install these them selves. they they cut so many corners on installation because incentive there employees for speed on misquoted jobs and there turn over rate is so high that a majority of there installers do not know how to roof properly. I would make sure you use one of the verified 3rd party contractors. The only bad thing about this product is the tesla RSD (rapid shut down devices). they have a extremely high failure rate. and because of how these systems are designed its horrendous to do maintenance on and cause leaking issues when people are popping up tiles as the feet of the panels get pulled up 5%-10% of the time. If they get there failure rate down though this wont be a problem in the future. Another product that is better designed in that regard is timberline solar although it is not as astatically pleasing.

You need to have another episode discussing the VAST difference between working with a roofer trained and certified by Tesla to install their product, vs working with Tesla directly. I was told by one such local roofer their price would be twice of what Tesla charged me (but it was no walk in the park working with Tesla, even though I am a licensed architect who understands the challenges of construction). The 3 to 4x price of standing-seam metal roof is a shocking multiplier, but it is also not qualified, thus unfortunately gives a very erroneous impression. It's NOT representative of what a homeowner would incur if they were replacing an old roof with new metal roof vs Tesla Solar Roof. In my case in DEC 2021, it was $36k TSR without a battery vs $19k (the cheapest possible quote, plenty other went multiples of that) for metal roof before federal & state tax incentives. A more apple to apple comparison, esp. for a brand new custom built house, would be to compare the combined cost of a 50 kw PV system on top of a metal roof, using the same capacity of batteries, chargers AND generators SO THAT the premium that a Tesla Solar Roof commands relative to the more typical PV+metal roof can be isolated. Furthermore, it appears that in this case, the same roofer would have installed either metal or TSR, which would most likely not be the case on other projects, meaning his metal roof cost would be an honest, transparent cost to the GC. I suggest so as not to discourage or scare off other homeowner considering TSR by the 3x to 4x multiplier quoted, you should do one more episode performing a much more accurate and meaningful comparison, not unlike the one you did on HW heaters.

To make a fair comparison you have to compare a conventional metal roof + a conventional solar power system with a Tesla roof (which includes the hardware to control the power generated by the roof, but does not include storage, unless you decide to add it). If you want to include storage then you need to add battery storage systems to both sides of the equation. If you don't want solar power then obviously there is no reason to consider a Tesla solar roof system. But if you do want solar and want to compare costs, then see the first paragraph.

The panel makes a gap between it and the roof below, so while it runs hot, it should keep the roof cooler ,especially in hot sunny climates.

There’s an air gap between the plywood roof and the panels. And it’s not insignificant either. Iirc they actually mention it but cooler air naturally circulates underneath it. It’s probably way better than asphalt.

I would very much love to see how things are at the end. We installed panels with Tesla Power Walls and Tesla Power. We veto deliberately overbuilt as a hedge against unplanned circumstances and technology in the future as well as to be able to sell power back to 1) help support the grid during times of energy stress and 2)to help defray the overall cost of our system. A solar roof not practical for us--yet. As much research as we've done on the subject, I'm astounded at how much more we've learned with this video. Please continue through the end of install. There are no doubt many, many more things we can learn from those who actually do the work.
