I want to piggy back on your comment. I could count on 1 hand how many times I have possible wrote a comment on KZbin, and no one may ever read this. But I feel that happiness that is child like when I listen to the sounds coming out of my headphones. I'm at a loss of words. This is the purest and sweetest tone and playing style that I have ever heard. I'm only a minute and 58 seconds into it, but I've been there for 15 minutes because I keep replaying. Amazing job man. You probably converted quite a few people to look into those pickups, Harley Benton, and Blackstar. But your style can't be bought. I just hope that guitar was of age.

Hi Matt, honoured to hear you play. I get the feeling that any guitar in your hands is going to create magic. There are so many guitar players out there (me first) who got a lesson on letting our emotions come out and shine through our playing. Especially let me add Gary would be proud brother. Yep AlNiCo II’s are so sweet, I have them in a Harley Benton E35 plus, it’s one of my favourite guitars to play in my collection. Great demo of the sounds you can get, my favourite was blues clean. I purchased my pickups in the UK made by Vanson, only paid £25.00 for them. I think in any country there will be a small company making good quality pickups, search and yes will find.

Superb demo, your playing and guitar sound absolutely fantastic. Have tried changing the tone control to vintage wiring? If your loving Gary Moore I found it to make a massive difference. The vintage tone wiring stops high frequency roll off when you turn the volume control down. It sounds significantly more natural than using a treble bleed and allows the tone to clean up really nicely. It only takes a single change to each volume pot, the tone contol is connected to the middle (output) connector instead of the left (input) connector which the pickup output is normally connected for the modern wiring. The vintage wiring is how all early Gibson Les Pauls were wired. When I made the change it was one of those moments..... "So that's how Gary Moore was able to use his volume control so much and sound amazing" . There's loads of articles that talk about is, you may see some which also shows the tone control wiring being changed, but that's not need really but if you want to have it authentically wired it's only takes a couple more solders. Thanks for a great video, really try the vintage wiring it you haven't, it really made a unbelievable difference to how playable my guitars are. It's the first thing I check when I get a new guitar.
@mattrobinson
@mattrobinson 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, I’ve actually been thinking about doing the treble bleed so I’m definitely gonna try vintage wiring instead. I don’t like how my guitars get muddy when the volume isn’t on 10 so this sounds like the answer. Thanks man 👍
@marka6414
@marka6414 5 жыл бұрын
@@mattrobinson I know you're going to love it. I never used my volume control before I came across this. Now my normal playing voume is about 7-8, when I want to add some extra agression I push it up to 10. For rythmn I back it off to 2-5, its lovely and clean. It's like being able to adjust the drive control on your overdrive pedal from your guitar. The problem I found with the treble bleed circuits is that high frequencies are always sent to the output, so when you start to back of the volume you find there's too much treble. Vintage wiring on the otherhand the guitar stays pretty much as it was on 10 but quieter. You test this you by playing at 10 then rolling the volume of to 7 and then increasing the volume of the amp so that the volume on 7 is now as loud as it was at 10 and you'll see the guitar sounds almost exactly the same. The reason for doing this is that as the guitar is quieter you naturally hear less treble. At gig volume you don't hear it as the overall volume is so much higher.

Keep in mind with the A2C pickups, if the wind layers do indeed have about half of a typical PAF, the coils will be 2x wider. That has the effect of reducing the lower harmonic strength for each note. That makes each note sound thinner. Fine for reducing lower string muddiness, but the treble strings can sound too thin. I'd instead go with the A4C set for fat sounding bridge tones, and just lower the coils and raise the pole screws for the neck pickup, or get the A2C for the neck
@mattrobinson

Matt, your playing is fantastic! Enjoy any vid I come across from you. Love your sound. I'm leaning heavily to the Toneriders for an LP build project. Any particular reason you prefer the Alnico2 over the 4? Hard to make a definitive decision based on KZbin, but I'm looking for a definitely old school "singing" tone. (Read that as Duane Allman's '59 LP). Any input would be appreciated! Keep rockin' these out there, love to listen!

Michael Bridges Thank You very much Michael, very kind of you. I would go with the alnico ii with metal cover for what you are saying. It really is an amazing pickup. Really dynamic and sweet but snarls when you hit the strings hard, nails all the classic 60s 70s Humbucker tones. The alnico iv is tighter and brighter so works well in the neck to keep things from getting muddy. If I could only keep one pickup for life it would be the alnico ii classic. It beats anything I've tried hands down

Your tone is great with these pickups! I have the same guitar and don´t really like the sound of the standard pickups compared to the wilkinson´s in my SC450 Plus. I have to get a set of these toneriders!

Hi Matt, would like to know if you're using coil split and if so how the neck pick up sounds compare to a strat neck pick up. Cheers from Hamburg
@mattrobinson
@mattrobinson 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, no it was wired for humbucker only. I had the coil split on another les Paul and never liked it or used it. I prefer to just have a separate guitar with single coils.

Hi Matt, i've just recently got my HB SC 500. I wanna use the guitar mainly for mid and sometimes high gain sound Unsure if i should put the alnico II or the p90 rebels in it. Think both sound really great. What would be your recommendation? The rebels or the alnico II? Or do you have any recommendations for another setup? Really nice playing and demos by the way 👍🏻
@mattrobinson
@mattrobinson 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks. It really depends what kind of tones you’re going for. I personally prefer the alnico ii’s. The rebels are good for what they do but make the les Paul very strat like. The alnico ii’s are thicker, warmer and more sustain. The rebels are better for clean and very low gain tones. Just make sure that if you get the rebels to change your 500k pots in your guitar to 250k pots because the rebels are single coils. I made the mistake of keeping the 500k in mine and it was way too bright ha ha

Ha ha I did. To be fair the stock pickups were actually good. A bit hotter and more modern, good for the heavier stuff. The toneriders have more of the classic tele sound that I wanted

@@mattrobinson I hear ya.. Im in the middle more like where you are...I expect that I would change the pups fairly quickly as one gets used to knowing how and what you expect to sound like.. However the Benton platform is pretty damn good out of the box in my research..Some problems here and there, nothing systemic... Hell you could buy three guitars and get your needs handled with minor mods.. My Maker getting close to needing a fret job and its killing me to accept that ugly..I wont even try that...Lolol..

Paul Vasey hey thanks for the compliment man, much appreciated. I have changed the volume and tone pots to CTS ones at the same time as the pickups but the pots didn't make much of a difference. The pickups made a huge difference on the other hand. The alnico 2's transomed this from an ok guitar to an absolute tone machine. Thanks again for the kind words
