I wish I had seen this a few days ago. I was just at the same spot. Unfortunately it was raining pretty hard and was on the cool side. I enjoyed the hike but found it a bit challenging as I am in my mid 60's and have had several knee surgeries. Got some ok photos but I should have grabbed some filters and taken a tripod with me. Great stuff as always Matt and kudos to you and your wife for taking your young son on all these amazing adventures.

Long exposure of clouds can be tricky to line up movement of the clouds with the subject in a scene (like a wood dock). Photopills calculator is great. Definitely saves the day for really long open shutter images. KASE Looks amazing!! Those filters are sick

Very nice. I use the same filters. My experience is that you dont need to calculate. Easier to just try different ND and find the right shutter speed

Thank you. These filters are pretty nice. I forgot to mention that I could add my lens hood over these filters cause of their small profile which is a first for me. It is great to hear how others approach long exposure photography. Anything longer than 60 seconds and the calculator comes out for me to dial in the best settings 🙂. I take first photo without the filter and then just count the "clicks" . 6 stops and 18 clicks and so on... (camera settings 1/3 stops)

That makes sense and very quick too. Once I make my first long exposure after changing my shutter, I start playing around with other settings like my aperture and/or ISO to change the shutter speed more (or my depth of field). Very quickly, the "click" technique gets overwhelming, especially with 16 stops for a 5-10 min long exposure. This is great feedback though...perhaps I overcomplicate things lol. Thanks for sharing!

Your just a mathematical genius and your sense of light on the landscape is within your minds calculations to predict the perfect timing 😲. But in all seriousness, you could just do some math and make the calculations without a calculator. My mind is weak.

That is the most convient filter system I have seen to date. Great pictures all around. I think the landscape 3 Stop image was the best in my opinion.

I heard a lot about KASE filters and how convenient they were and I was pleasantly surprised at a few more details that blew me away like the labeling you can place on the KASE filter kit. It's the little things that help too. And I forgot to show in the video that my lens hood could fit overtop of the filters which was a huge plus. Thanks for the feedback on my 3 stop image! Cheers

I have been using Kase Revolution filters since they came out and love them. My camera also allows me to take long exposures up to 60 minutes without doing calculations. Keep up the great channel!

It came with the filters and KASE pouch. I agree, well done on their part to include it. There are extra labels incase some get lost.

I've been using B+W filters for several years, but the 'magnetic' appeal is getting quite tempting. When you're balancing on rocks in challenging conditions, screwing in and out filters just gets frustrating.

I've done some long exposures during the mid day at a light house on the ocean. Used long exposures during sunrise and sunset as well. I changed over to the Kase filters like yours about 6 months ago. I use them alot more than my old nonmagnetic ones. I've dabbled using aperture priority and just throwing the filters on with good success on shot under 30 seconds.

Shoot mid day all the time with LE. That’s just cause I always over sleep and miss softer light. 😂😂

Thank you for this very timely video! When starting the video, I was thinking about asking you how you use PhotoPills, and then you showed it. And, I have been thinking about getting a set of Kase filters, and you just convinced me to get them. A question I have is, what are the pros and cons for getting a set of 82mm or 95mm with adapters for my other lens vs 77mm. I use a Nikkor Z 100-400 mostly (77mm), but also have a 67mm and a 62mm. Your insight would be appreciated! Also, a video dedicated to your PhotoPill use would be great! Thanks again!

That's fantastic feedback! I'm thrilled to hear that the video was helpful and timely for you. Regarding your question about filter sizes, it's a common dilemma. The choice between getting a larger filter size with step-up rings or multiple filters in different sizes ultimately depends on your shooting style and budget. Opting for a larger filter size, like 82mm or 95mm, with step-up rings allows you to use the filters across a range of lenses with smaller filter thread sizes, like your 67mm and 62mm lenses. This can be convenient and cost-effective in the long run, as you only need one set of filters for all your lenses. On the other hand, getting filters specifically for each lens diameter, like 77mm for your Nikkor Z 100-400, will allow you to use a lens hood (best to confirm this, but I was very happy that my 70-200 lens hood worked with the filters). However, it is more expensive to invest in multiple filters for different lenses AND you have to carry multiple sets around instead of a pack of step up rings. Consider your shooting preferences, budget, and how often you switch between lenses when making your decision. I hope this helps!

Thank you so much ..... I had not thought about the lens hood. This changes my thinking a bit. The 100-400 us the largest lens I have, but would like the 180-600 one of these days, and it's 95mm. That's about $200 more, and would interfere with the lens hoods o the small lenses. I'll have to sort this out ..... thanks so much for your help!!

I like the long exposure version better. I have the previous version of these Kase magnetic filters, Wolverine I think they're called? I'm usually just using the polarizer, I gotta get back to some of these long exposure shots!

I’ve used 16.5 stop filters, during the middle of the day, for very long exposures to remove moving people from my compositions at places like Arches National Park. I also used the same filter for the eclipse, but with much shorter shutter speeds, obviously. One thing you did not cover was how to choose filter size, especially if you have lenses with vastly different filter sizes. Mine range from 67 to 95mm. I chose two sets, a 72mm set and an 82mm set. 72mm fits my most used lenses (20-70, and 70-200), and I can use a 67-72mm stepup ring for the 67mm lens. The 82mm will cover the rest:(16-35, 100-400, 24-105j, except my 95mm 200-600 lens. I rarely use a filter on that lens. The 82mm can also be used to stack filter on the wider angle lenses without creating too much vignetting. Some caveats: 1) You cannot use a lens hood on a lens with a stepup ring. 2) It is difficult to remove a magnetic filter with a lens hood on. 3) if you have a wide angle lens (less than 24mm) it is useful to get larger filters with a stepup ring to eliminate vignetting caused by stacking rings. You can stack a 3 stop and 6 stop to, effectively, get a 9 stop filter, for instance.

Thanks for sharing Matt, educational for guys like me ! I currently use NISI's 112MM filters, as they fit the Nikon Z 14-24mm, Z 24-70mm, and Z 70-200mm, using the NISI lens hood. On and off is easy as well. The 330 second long exposure is a gorgeous shot, well done ! If I was to critique anything, it would be music choice. I think Van Morrison's "Into The Mystic" would have been more appropriate. Cheers,

Nice video, where did you get the 16 stop Kase Filter? Did you stack the 10 and 6? I don't see the 16 on the Kase website. About to order a 82mm kit for my S 24-70 for my Z9. Any discount codes available or do you have a link so you can get credit?

Long exposures are so beautiful. So let's say u don't have a 15 stop. Stacking filters can allow u to make it a 15 stop?

Correct! I was stacking my filters in the video for a few shots. I didn't have a 16 stop filter so I stacked a 10 stop and a 6 stop. I could also add a polarizer too. There is a small risk of vignetting the more you stack but I bare noticed it because of how thin the filters were and how close they are to the glass of the lens.
