Gotta love the drone. Either people love drones or hate them with all their heart 😄

100%. It’s best to be respectful for the people around you and of course the wildlife. The smaller drones are quiet which helps

Loved this trip! The drone footage definitely took it to the next level, well done Matt!
@MattShannonPhoto9 ай бұрын
Thanks, Kyle! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! The trip turned out to be more chaotic than I anticipated, but it's all part of the reality of being a nature photographer. While it can be frustrating at times to piece together a story for KZbin, capturing the spawn and drone footage made it all worthwhile.
@KyleWithTheWild9 ай бұрын
@@MattShannonPhoto I can understand the struggle as I too have been working on some projects to try to piece together stories! Definitely has its frustrating moments, but watching the story unfold with time I imagine is always worth it! :)
@MattShannonPhoto9 ай бұрын
Absolutely, it's reassuring to hear that others can relate to the challenges of storytelling in projects. Despite the occasional frustrations, witnessing the story come together over time is indeed rewarding and makes the journey worthwhile! Thanks for your understanding and encouragement! Cheers

Yes, it is all about the workflow. Especially when traveling with a baby. So many pampers and wet wipes stuffed away in pockets of my camera gear 😄

I was fortunate to catch a herring spawn off Neck Point Park in Nanaimo a few years ago - feeding frenzy doesn't do the sight justice. Great video - thank you!

It's great that you tried the OM-System, you're incredibly talented and now I'm even more happy that I switched to the OM-1 and it feels like you loved working with the 150-400. You will miss it after the loan for sure!

Nice work as usual! The issue you mentioned in 7:34 can be partially solved by using a longer mounting plate to center the weight properly. Another thing is that the weight of your gear might be slightly beyond the counterbalance capacity of 502 head. Maybe try out 504x, nitrotech 608 or sachtler ace xl (I used to pair this one with my old 500mm; highly recommended). The fluid head should be able to maintain the balance at any angle without entirely locked if the counterbalance and drag system are properly set.
@MattShannonPhoto9 ай бұрын
Thank you for your feedback and suggestions! You're absolutely correct about the issue I mentioned at 7:34, and utilizing a longer mounting plate to properly center the weight sounds like a practical solution. Admittedly, I'm working with minimal video equipment in the field, and I appreciate your understanding. While my setup might not be as elaborate as some videographers', I'm eager to enhance my skills and explore the world of videography further, including investing in professional-grade equipment. Your gear recommendations are valuable, and I'm sure they'll benefit others reading the comments as well. Thank you for your input!

Greeting Matt - Just stumbled on your channel and enjoy yoru videos. To chime in on the gimbal versus video head, I prefer the gimbal for both stills and video. Primarily it is a weight issue for me as the video head is heavier and with a carbon fiber gimbal, I can shed some weight while out in the field.

Fantastic video Matt. I know i said it last video, but again, this gets me so excited for the Island later this year (same week as your workshop apparently 😂). Love seeing that this is a family experience ❤️. I've considered a drone, but just haven't pulled the trigger yet. Hard to beat the unique perspectives they offer though!

Outstanding video Matt, it is great that you are showing off our island for its attractions and for it's beauty. You are going to love the 400-4.5, I have had mine for about a year and it is an excellent lens. It is excellent with the 1.4X and it is very good with the 2X as well. I use mine with the 800PF and the 180-600 and they cover my wildlife needs. I have never thought of going to Hornby for the spawn but next year I plan on spending a few days there. Thanks for sharing your experiences and I am looking forward to your next video. Maybe with any luck we will cross paths somewhere on the island.

Thank you for your kind words and for sharing your experience with the 400-4.5 lens! It's been a few weeks for me and I am in love! I'm hoping to go whale watching this month to test it out on the water. 800mm f/6.3 is what I looking at getting next. It sounds like you have the perfect kit!
@keithmacdonald48059 ай бұрын
@@MattShannonPhoto You will love the 800 f/6.3, to be able to have that kind of reach in a hand holdable lens is great. I just got back from 4 hours of packing that lens and using it only hand held and I am 75 years old so it tells you how usable that lens is. It is also incredibly sharp and takes the 1.4 X really well.

Another great video Matt. Question. -with the video head and then camera, would I need a stronger/bigger tripod? My current tripod is a travel carbon fiber tripod. It is not a Peak Design but similar to their small travel one. Thanks

Have you ever tried mft cameras (e.g.: OM1)? And another question: have you tried photographing a puma?
@MattShannonPhoto8 ай бұрын
Yes, indeed, I have. I've experimented with both the OM1 and Lumix, albeit briefly. They offer considerable reach when coupled with a lens suitable for wildlife photography. Personally, I have a preference for full-frame cameras. Regarding encountering a puma, no, I haven't, but I've had the privilege of encountering three in the wild. Regrettably, I wasn't equipped with my camera during those instances, but at least I lived to recount the experience. Pumas are notoriously elusive creatures, often remaining unseen unless they choose otherwise, as the saying goes.

I would love to try drone photography, but everywhere I live is a no-fly zone without special permission, and that red-tape barrier is too high for a non-professional.
