Katelynn gets 5 stars! Never any hesitation for the assignment, smiling positive attitude all the way through with proper technique on gas and brake. Couldn't help but recall these are the types of situations where Lizzy shined as well so I bet she would be proud of Katelynn. Awesome teamwork, recording and editing. Peace!

Matt, as an ex-Heavy Tow Truck operator a suggestion for you for next time........ put a shackle and snatch block down low off your rear bumper and run the tow cable through that to give you the lower pulling angle when coming over the edge onto the road area. This is something we do with Heavy Tow Trucks to assist and keep angles down lower than our booms... I hope this helps in the future... A great recovery and great to see the vehicle come up and be recovered in one piece otherwise it could have been very bad.... well done.

I'm thinking that his boom might be sticking out too far and make it too hard on the wench line to come down and back to the rear. I was thinking the same thing, but it looks like that would be a hard bend for the line.

@@davidnorthrup3674 I gotta say I agree with ya david seeing how long of a distance the wreckers winch lines would have to go back towards the back bumper (I'd say around 4 to 5ft) I think it would put too much stress on them.
@gregparrott
@gregparrott 2 ай бұрын
Your suggestion sounds good fir minimizing the risk of the pickup truck tipping over. But there's a possible benefit of keeping the winch line's path up high. As can be seen in a couple instances, the wrecker's left rear tire is both digging into the road and going sideways. With the winch line's attachment point to the wrecker being up high, it increases the weight on the wrecker's left rear tire, 'planting' it on the road, reducing its tendency to slide.Admittedly, that advantage for the the wrecker, comes at the expense of a disadvantage for the pickup truck's stability, Either way, I would have thought it would require two MUCH LARGER vehicles to make that recovery.

Something the Wrecker could use, in particular for situations where sideloads act on it like this, is feet. Like two stabilizer legs that take it off its suspension and put the load on directly into the ground. Wouldn't even need to be hydraulic, basically an A frame, but to spread the load. When not in use, it could be stowed away inside the arm. It's basically just linear items.

Must say, this has been one of my favorite recoveries yet. The technicality was insane. The wrecker's 4 wheel steer definitely played a big role in its stability. Matt used his knowledge and the capabilities of the rigs excellently. A tool that could come in handy with recoveries, especially for the banana and morrvair, would be steel portable ramps or chock blocks for when you need lift or bracing while winching. Depending on the ones you get, you could even use them as a redirect point, which could also make getting that downward pull-point a breeze. Having been heavy self-propelled artillery, there were only 2 ways to get lift on a track for maintenance: the M88 using its crane or pulling up on chock blocks. Those things never failed. Even when we had to railhead the tracks for deployments, we used the same ones on the wood bed of the train cars. We had to use tanker's bars or sledgehammers to remove them because they dug in so well. Just a thought.😊

I have to disagree. The radio tower call where the lady in a Jeep with a manual transmission that wouldn't climb any further and maybe had an issue with brakes. She was nearly at the top. That one had my palms sweating, and my heart rate was up like I just jogged to the top. She was at such an angle that when she tried to release the brakes the Jeep started rolling, and she couldn't get it turned around. I'm pretty sure Matt was able to drive it out. They made multiple comments about how dangerous the trail was and how nobody should be driving up. I'll post the link if I can find it.

I'm sure y'all love random advice... When you have a 4x4, automatic transmission, and no lockers, you can fake it a bit by jamming the brakes as hard as possible, then floor the throttle and gently ease up on the brakes to modulate wheel spin. The brakes give some friction to the wheels that are up in the air and direct a little more torque to the ones with grip. Doesn't work in all situations but could keep a wheel from digging in. Great video! Brave Katylin!

I have a buddy who bought a 2017 GMC pickup. It had all kinds of "safety" features. He asked me to drive his truck one day to help him with traction control. I won't get into to much about the computer BS. But as I was driving down a lease road. Some sort of safety braking applied itself. The truck literally pulled me off the road to the right, from hitting a puddle. It did it again to me on the ride home. 100 percent convinced the truck was defective. Buy 2018 he had hit multiple ditches, and the final incident pulled him into a ditch where he hit an approach and launched the truck only to have to come down nose first. Another friend with the chevy version, but same vehicle never had that problem. New crap is just that. Crap. MORR is doing it right with old stuff!

I believe what you are refering to is called "Stabilitrak". Basically, if you get into a sideways skid, it applies the brakes in order to straighten you. Depends on a lot of sensors, the computer, and the anti-lock brakes. It is a disaster waiting to happen. I had a 2015 GMC Acadia with stabilitrak. We were at the Charlotte NC motorspeedway during Christmas. They put up a "drive through" Christmas light display at the track. Part of the course you are actually on a portion of the speedway. I got too far up the bank and the stabilitrak engaged. Had to pull over to the side and shut the ignition off for a short period of time to reset everything. Stabilitrak is a bad idea and a royal pain in the @$$.

@@JLewis1979 I don't know much about those systems, but I thought maybe the vehicle thought it was going to rollover due to the angle it went off the edge? I've no idea if that would trigger it tho, just a casual observer
@russellv6234
@russellv6234 2 ай бұрын
Your guess is wrong. Regardless of pretensioners, being at an angle like that will activate the ratchet mechanism and it can only spool in at that point. Once you get on level ground and give it a shake it will start working again. Same thing as rear seatbelts do for carseat installations.
@DJ_Underwood
@DJ_Underwood 2 ай бұрын
This is accurate, we can see all side curtains went off due to angle, there is a sensor typically under the center console or seat that is for detecting rollovers. I have set one of these off on accident tightening my center console in my old truck with an impact drill, cost me over 3 grand for 5 new seatbelts, new airbags, and new headliner.
