I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

I love using the tube! I even fish it top water and suspended. Now that I’ve caught your attention lol. Let me explain I stuff the tube with an ear plug with a small treble snugged up the centre. For suspended I’ll add split shots between the ear plug and the treble. Depth depends on the size of split shot. I use this for bass and pike. Pike seem to prefer the white colour

Absolutely slayed on tubes this year. Mostly shallow flats and grass. I dedicated so much time to it pretty much 75% of my fish came off the tube this year. How weight affects fall rate and different heads affect how it falls, when to go light/heavy. The fall you get from a 90 degree line tie vs a 60 degree vs flat eye. They are every bit as versatile as a senko. There are very few situations you can't modify a tube to work in.

Yaaa! I caught you in the afternoon. I've fished the Stupid Tube some and had some success with it. Back 20 years ago when we were fishing tubes more, I used some weight from Lindy that went up inside the tube. The have two holes in them that you threaded a OWG hook through and then T-rigged it in a similar fashion to the Stupid Tube. I don't know it they still make those or not, I still have some. They made the tube spiral down real good. Thanks for reminding me of a great technique.

Not just bass... I've caught decent pike on a 3" tube as well. I've also modified the bait by inserting an old school Berkeley craw inside the tube, giving it added bulk and a more complex profile with the protruding claws. Fished on an external football jig. Works great.

That's the reason why I never really gotten into fishing a tube -- because it is so snaggy and at a $1.25 a jighead it could cost a fortune if you're fishing on snaggy bottoms like I do on a regular basis. I have always looked for a way to fish the tube without an exposed hook and now I found it. So, thanks for uploading this video! I have inserted a bullet weight into the tube and used an offset hook to rig the tube Texas style so that it would be less snaggy, but it doesn't work because the weight get in the way of the hook and prevent the hook from reaching the top of the tube. This wide-gap tube jigheads solved my problem! Thanks!

They make cylinder type weights that go up inside the tube and one side has a large opening to Texas rig the tube. They don’t get in the way it is completely weedless but I do miss a few fish here and there. They still spiral on the fall.

Thanks for the description on how to rig it. I had tried this but did not do a good job of locating the location of where the hook needed to exit the head of the tub so my attempts made a really messy presentation and I wasted a bunch of tubes in the process. I was trying to exit the hook too high up in the tube head and when I went to rotate the head inside the tube I'd tear the head. Now I have a better understanding and will be using this in the future.

After your last video about tubes, I decided to give tubes a try. I was going to try to catch some smallmouth on one river, but they were removing on of the dams, so everything was closed off. I switched and went to the spillway at the local reservoir even though there isn't any smallmouth there. I left the tube on just for the heck of it. I ended up catching 4 channel cats in about 20 minutes.

Great video! I just rigged a tube with a EWG hook Texas style…. I put a 3/16 tungsten bullet out in front and pegged with a bobber stop. I put a foam earplug in the back behind the hook and the tail of the tube stands up and dances around in the current. You can twitch the rod and have the weight “pecking” the rocky bottom for sound. Also, you can slide the bobber stop up however far you want and it will float up and suspend off bottom sort of like an adjustable Carolina Rig. 👌

I’ve watched this video several times. Great information. As I read through the comments I see the foam earplug trick? If I threaded an earplug up on the shank of the hook and pushed it up the hook shank wouldn’t I be filling up the gap on the wide gap hook and making the EWG hook less effective? It’s amazing how many modifications fishermen come up with to catch more fish.
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 2 жыл бұрын
It would fill the gap and can interfere with the hookup, but in my experience doing it theres not enough lost fish for me not to consider doing it. I have a video coming out in a few days on ways I fish a tube.

I use ewg swimbait hooks on Zman tubes all the time in salt water, sometimes drop shot, sometimes t or c rig, but never with weight in the actual bait. They naturally float so I take advantage of that, if you skip the weight along the bottom you get great action, you can let it suspend and twitch, lots of options. Another advantage of just an ewg hook is it pulls the bait straight from the nose, so way less snags than having the eye on top of the head. I will give this rig a try though, honestly wasn't aware of these, there are definitely times a jighead is the best option.

After seeing a video on the stupid tube about 3 yrs ago, I went to the lake to try it out for the 1st time. I was bank fishing an area with with some moss down in the water and it worked well. I was using a medium light spinning rod that i took my drop shot off. I got the 1st one hooked but he came off about halfway. I did catch 2 largemouths after but i hammered the hook set and that probably worked. I think i need to use a medium fast rod next time. Stupid tube was a success!

Love your videos. With winter almost upon us, I'd love to see your take on winter storage for summer fishing gear. I recently decided to make rod storage for the wall and there are so many options, both verticle and horizontal. I prefer verticle as I feel it is less stress on the rods than hanging with 2 contact points horizontally. What are your thoughts? What about gear storage for those who don't have a dedicated room in the house just for fishing? (Such as only a small corner of the garage or shed)

Matt. I purchased a few tubes of different colors. I want to take two tubes, cut them in half, and mix them to end up with a hybrid “frankenstien” tube. What can i use to glue them back together?
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Melting them works the best, but there are plastic glues like mend-it that will work.

I prefer tube jig heads that have a teardrop shaped lead weight because it seems to make the tube spiral better. I prefer the tube hooks with a line tie that is horizontal to the hook. I don’t know why but it works better

I do like this rig. Any tricks to fishing it deep with a 3/4 or half ounce weight besides Carolina rig? I just bought about 500 Yamamoto tubes for practically nothing. So i will be fishing tubes for largemouth and smallies for the next 20 years.

Do you have to cut them off everytime to re rig if the tube falls off? How would you put another tube on when its on the line?

Ppl in the south fish these differently- we're lazy and don't like having to retie to put on a new tube so we just Texas rig or Carolina rig them I like to push a piece of a senko into the head to give my hook more plastic to bite into and hold it in place- helps it not tear out if you start cracking the tube. Or- we take the end off a set of foam ear plugs- I'm sure everyone has hear of this trick- soak it in scent and push it up into the head- now the tube wants to float a little, it's soaked with scent, and your hook as more to bite into. Really I shouldn't make it sound like I have a lot of personal experience with this- I've seen guys do it a ton though. It works, they catch a lot of bass doing it.

The trouble I have with the stupid tube jig is thin walled tubes that tear to easily when setting up the jig itself like Berkley powerbait, I find that Strike King tubes are a perfect soft plastic tube for this presentation

i actually prefer thinner tubes for better hookups IMO

I think the Stupid Tube is far superior to a Texas Rigged Tube. I’ve only fished it a few times, but the action is so much better. I learned about this rig from Zona. I kicked myself for not figuring it out on my own. Once you see the rigging it’s obvious. Thanks Matt.

I always thought tubes would be great for saltwater because they look like a little squid. I tried them a little without luck but I bet they would work still when squid are around.

I tried the stupid tube. Recently I tried the trokar tube hook with a tungsten weight in front of the tube. I like the trokar hook plus I Recently saw a video about slitting the side opposite the hook so you get better penetration like a swimbait with a belly slit.

I need to spend more time with the tube, one of those techniques that I've managed to overlook and just never really delve into. I from the southeastern US which doesn't help- it's not very widely used down here- not even for smallmouth. But I have several packs and several different types of head- including the stupid tube heads. I caught some nice large mouth on them drifting them in creek mouths a couple seasons ago but- that's the only tube fish I've ever caught.
