Fun fact: Tampere is often called Manse here in Finland, which is short for Mansesteri or Manchester as it is known in English. This is because it was seen as the Manchester of Finland with all the industry back in the day.

You should go to Tampere in the summer, its an amazing vibe with all the lakes, beaches and the nature. Plus the days are so long its so lively till very late at night which is surreal.

I flew to Tampere from Seattle few years ago (to Helsinki by plane and then by train to Tampere). Näsinneula was inspired by Seattle's Space Needle and it's definitely noticeable. Revolving restaurant serves seafood, meat, veggies and other stuff. It's not cheap but it's definitely worth the money :) God I miss that city, so many good memories. Nothing but love from the US of A to Finland!

I live in Tampere and this video somehow reminded me of something about one of the buildings. The building can be seen several times in this video; it is the big yellow building that has a tower at the corner, it is in the middle of the picture at 6:52 and later at 8:23. It has businesses and offices on the first two floors but the upper floors are residential. About 10 years ago, I was looking to buy a new apartment and, just for fun, I was browsing all kinds of apartments regardless of whether they were within my price range or not. At the time, the highest floor of that building was for sale, and they had pictures of what it looks like inside. In this video you can see that right under the "cone" at the top of the tower there's a row of small windows. They are actually at the floor level of a round room that is part of that apartment there. So whoever bought it now owns their very own tower top with a cone :D The apartment was really grand anyways, with two different balconies and surprisingly large windows to the other direction (towards the inner yard, which is a private area). The price was more than one million euros though, so my budget was missing a zero there, but I liked looking at the pictures of it anyways.

The old factories that have been converted look stunning - reminds me a lot of the architecture you showed in your Liverpool videos. The views from the tower were pretty cool - the shot of the double decker train from above was cool - I love those trains over on the continent. I like that you're back in Finland again - was it because you enjoyed it that much on your last visit or a combo of that and cheap flights or something else?

You're right about the Liverpool connection, they're very similar to the docks and other waterfront buildings! Ten out of ten for observation 😄. Agree that the trains are great, I did manage to ride a few whilst there and they were very comfortable and quiet. Yeah there were a few reasons for heading back to Finland, I did really like my last trip so it was wonderful to get back and explore a slightly different area. When I travelled there were a few destinations with £10 fares and I did find the price very appealing, however Tampere stood out because it was a new route that Ryanair were offering from London Stansted and it was somewhere I knew nothing about - didn't seem very touristy at all and I liked that! Also, quite often with new routes if they're not very successful then they get dropped at the end of the season so I decided to get there whilst I can. In the end it was between Tampere and Zagreb (both new routes and both offering £10 fares). The flight times for Tampere were more suitable for me and so I went for it! Glad I did, it was a short but really enjoyable trip.

A nice video of a nice town; Tampere is a city of progress and especially lovely in summer. It is worth mentioning that the current prime minister of Finland Sanna Marin started her political career here, and back in 2013 was chosen the chairperson of the city council at the age of 27. A video 'Olipa kerran raitiovaunu' of a council meeting about the dark red trams shown in the video went viral and increased her popularity, as she seemed to be the only person in the room in her right mind.

Tampere tammela born and raised👊🏻 it's an old working-class neighborhood east of tammerkoski, near city center. There was lots of industry back in the day, mostly known by it's shoe factories. That's why it's known as The capital of shoemakers.

There were 6 shoe factories in tammela neighborhood. The brick buildings are stil up and nowadays they are used as apartment and office buildings. My childhood/early adulthood home is next to one of them, my parents still live there. There are lots of brick and other old buildings in tampere. Sadly the city has deconstructed lots of them and build new modern buildings to replace them.

Tampere has also its darker side as it was the epicenter of Finnish civil war 100y ago. However, nowadays it has gained lot of good reputation as a city where different political parties try to solve problems together instead of arguing.

It´s really cheap to fly to Tampere and Helsinki with Ryanair from London. 10 pounds one way. Air bnb´s are from 25 pounds per apartment and three star Omena hotel is 65 euros for two for a night in Tampere.

Hi Anel, yes the flights when I visited were incredibly cheap - £10 each way on Ryanair. In fact a few days after I bought them they went down to £5 each way - Doh! I found accommodation a little bit more expensive than that, the cheapest hotel I could find was the Hotel Citi Inn near the train station which to be fair was a great place to stay. I think it was about £55 a night including breakfast. If I remember correctly the cheapest airbnb I could find was around £40 a night once all the extra charges were included. The expect the deals will change with the time of year etc.

Thank you Zarniwooper, I was hoping for an outdoor observation area when I got to the top but sadly it was closed for renovation (so the lady in the cafe said). That meant I had to film through the glass trying my best to avoid the reflections etc. Not ideal but I would agree that the view is even better in the flesh. They re-opened it for a while some time ago, but had to close it again for the same reason. I'm not sure if it's closed right now for renovation or idiocy.

Another "Great Views" video. You have so many it's taking me quite a while to go through them. I just set it on popular this time for the sorting. I'm always happy to explore along with you the different parts of Europe. I lived for years in SE Asian countries for work, but never went to Europe. I like that The Finnish wisely recognized the "good bones" and therefore repurposed so many of their industrial structures. Here in the US some industrial structures have been repurposed but many, e.g. auto-industry factories in Detroit, Michigan, which definitely had good bones were let go to run down and eventually were demolished.😢 Do you know what type of powerplant supplies electricity to the public transportation, the trams, is it Coal-Fired there?

Yes it's a really clever way of keeping important historical buildings that are no longer needed for their original purpose, shame they knocked all those factories and plants down in Detroit - I mean everybody has heard of the auto-mobile industry from that part of America so it's a sad loss for America's heritage. Not too sure about the power plant unfortunately, coal possibly?

@@MattWhitingsEurope It's a type of low sulfur coal that can be burnt more cleanly with substantially less environmental impact using our gas-fume-scrubbing/lime-shower capture systems. There's also coal-gasification. Natural Gas is better and even more abundant here and even easier to clean the post burn gases than clean coal or a higher sulfur coal.

It certainly was quiet! It was nice to visit somewhere that didn't feel all that touristy - bit like I was discovering it. I'm sure it will get more popular in the future - I hear plenty of people visit the Christmas market but I was a few days early for that.

The civil war was fought pretty hard at Tampere and there are a lots of bullet holes etc. on many of the old buildings. It's somehow creepy to look at them. I think there is still a dried blood puddle of a fallen red guard soldier left in the floor of Tampereen Teatteri building to remind of the horrors.

Ah Tampa Bay, that brings back some great memories of watching my idol Springsteen play at the MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre (back then it was the Ford Amphitheatre) & also watching a big wrestling event at the Amalie Arena (back then it was called the Ice Palace). Fun times!

Å is just "o". This alphabet is actually from sweden originally. Usually Ä and Ö are difficult ones for foreigners.

Fun fact for you: The Finnish civil war in 1918 actually ended in the city center of Tampere for most part. Tampere was a red city as you could probably guess from the working class people. The whites who had helped from the Germans surrounded the city and one of the most brutal fights if not the most brutal fight of the war happened in the city

I was really interested in the city's history and would have loved to of delved in a bit deeper if I'd had a bit more time. Really really stupid question from me, I always wondered it but never was brave enough to ask as I didn't want to come across as stupid. So the question is, you know how the rapids keep flowing down I to the lower lake, how does it never eventually run out of water? Is there an eternal internal water source or something? The same way mountain streams keep going down forever even if it's not been raining for a while. By the way this city reminds me partly of Vyborg near St-Petersburg. It looks like an interesting place to visit. I can't believe it was only £10 to get there. The industrial left over buildings and the locomotive are fascinating! By the way, I was so brainwashed (very subtly) as a child that I thought that I loved Lenin with all my heart (as a human being). When I was a child growing up in Russia, even some school children books were about the life of Lenin when he was a child (made up stories).

That's amazing Olga, I will definitely visit Russia at some point - St Petersburg looks spectacular from the photos I've seen. Wasn't the city previously called Leningrad? It sounds like you had a lot of Lenin-based influences as a child?! Flight price was incredible - £10 there and £10 back, I don't know how they do it. Yes as far as the lakes go I think you are right in that the top lake is constantly being topped up by hundreds of streams and rivers that flow into it from higher land, these are almost never ending because of rain and storms - I hiked many mountains where the hiking trail is close to a stream and thought the same thing - where the heck does all that water keep coming from. water comes from huge area and mostly it is rain water so without rain it will eventually dry up, they do regulate amount of water passing trough dam so lakes water level does not go too low or high.

There is similar arhitecture in Vyborg as the national romantic or jugend style of architecture flourished at the same time as these cities grew rapidly, and old wooden buildings were replaced by bigger buildings made of brick. Your story of Lenin was quite interesting. The Lenin museum in Tampere is worth visiting.

Part of the reason Tampere looks like Vyborg (Viipuri) is that it used to be a Finnish city as well before WW2 :)

I dont understand why nearly all English speaking people have so much problems to pronounce finnish words. In Finnish laguage you highlight the first syllabel, not the last. So the capital of Finland is not helSINKI. It is HELsinki. Allso not tamPERE, it is TAMpere, and FINlayson.

@@MattWhitingsEurope I laughed a lot at the Turku pronunciation. Surprisingly my Finnish friend from Turku was used to that. I wasn't because I never learnt it any other way than the original. Anyway, in Finnish the spellings are pronounced as they're written. Just like Indian English, and Japanese, Finnish also has phonetic spellings. So you can just pronounce everything as you read. For example Turku would be TOOR-koo. It is actually given on Wikipedia. Yet I appreciate your effort to show us Europe through your eyes. I have liked and subscribed and looking forward for more. Let me know if you are gonna come to viborg. I live here and may help you out if possible. 🙂
