I started this from scratch with different people and different production 3 different times and they were all good in their own way but it never really felt like it had found it’s DNA until, after sitting on it for 2 years, my friend Owen Lewis and I went into the studio and live tracked it with a 5 piece band and it came together immediately. Who knew all it needed was 6 dudes in a room jamming for a few hours. Thank you so much to every person involved in the making of this record all along the way. This song is definitely making me feel a lot. Sadness. Awe. It is a work of art and there is a lot to unpack here. Getting happy instead of giving into suicidal ideation, but here "getting happy" is a metaphor for drink (or any other sort of unhealthy coping mechanism). And the discordant and intense undertones in the music paired with Matt's emotional vocals all saying he's not happy, but actually quite bitter. I feel like I can close my eyes and see a story in this song, and I can feel that bitterness and sadness and frustration. I love it. I can relate. It's why I love your music. It's amazing.

The bitterness takes it a step further, because "I'll just 'Get Happy' instead" could sound like a scoffed remark in response to someone telling the singer to suck it up, or that they need to get over themselves. Why are you upset? Just make yourself happy!

I was more under the impression that "he's" mocking other's advice for him. If you've ever been ACTUALLY diagnosed with depression some folks don't understand what that actually means and will say things like "you just need to have a better outlook", "have a better attitude", "why not just be happy?" So he's basically saying in response to that advice "yeah I'll just 'get happy' 'like you said'. I can't wait till tomorrow so I'm sure just suddenly 'getting happy' will be the immediate fix." Using sarcasm to illustrate how much harder it is to cope and feel better than some folks think.

It's bitter either way, but I think the story here is drinking to escape your problems and being told something along the lines of "that's not the way. you need to xyz to be happier" and then being bitter about it and mocking about such clueless, useless advice because just "getting happy" is not that simple. But definitely mocking the people who say stuff like "just cheer up"
