Did you know how to pronounce Hoya ‘Michele’?

@@finestracheride It is easy for you! 😂 I mispronounced it the first time, but the second time around it was better. It is better than when people pronounce it ‘Michelle’ as in Michelle Obama. I also probably could have thought of a different Michelle.

good morning: I myself have a very very very old hoya...when i was very young over 50 years ago I took a clipping off of my dads hoya that he had taken from his great great grandmother that had the plant since 1825!!!!!! my hoya was so massive but last year i decided to cut her way back and instead of her climbing up trellis i exposed all the woody thick stems and let her hang vines instead. OMG it was like a rebirth of her old stems because they were exposed to more sunshine and water from misting the new leaves that appeared all over the stems was a miracle in the making. soooo beautiful. she looks like a new young massive plant. there was many many leaves that fell off of her while i was untangling her from trellis and i stuck all the leaves in a basket with soil and now that basket is massive in just one year.!!!!! I feel i have one of the oldest hoyas in the world!!! and love her dearly. thanks for your videos..

There are a lot of plants that start to decline for no apparent reason after 2-3 years and the reason often ends up being that the potting mix becomes too compressed and loses its airiness. Sometimes simply an old potting mix that condensed from top watering is the culprit.

Thank you for the interesting information about Hoya. I’m going to put my Linarius out in the fall to see if it’ll bloom- I’ve yet to have a blooming Hoya here in Las Vegas. It maybe just to dry. But one of my houseplant students gave me cutting of a carnosa that she states blooms a lot. It’s rooting up and going to be potted up soon. I’ll post about it (would love to get some of your feed back over on my Chanel 😁) thanks for the video

Some claimed that too for thomsonii and lyi, but moving them into window with natural light only didn't help at all. :) I also know a hoya collector with a very big collection who had linearis for many years, and it never bloomed for them, despite many other blooming. I think we still have a lot to learn about them 😄

My oldest Hoya Krimson Queen is about 10 now. I decided she wasn't thriving so I pulled her out to repot. There was zero soil. So I choose a slightly larger pot, added soil and now I've got new healthy growth. Funny thing, she has never stopped blooming.

I use Monios T8s in a 60cm length, as they come in a set of 6. I arranged my Milsbo into three shelves and put two lights above each shelf, but with the bottom half being one shelf area, and the top half being two shelf areas. Immediately, the growth and coloration were stunning, but after about four weeks I realized the two upper shelves were simply getting too much light (the plants told me - they were growing down), and I reduced them to one bulb per shelf instead of two - this seems to have helped. The bottom area seems fine, with the lights 45-60-ish centimeters above the plants. And then, my incrasatta Moonshadow developed black spots and had to come out of the cabinet. I hope the spots stop but they have not. Now, I am struggling a bit with the hoyas in coco husk which may be a terrible medium for indoor growing, for me, because I can't figure out the watering with this medium given the high humidity - luckily it's only a few species but the krohniana can't keep new leaves and they're always raining down to the bottom of the cabinet due to watering issues. It's a learning curve I hope to master soon, and perhaps the krohniana doesn't need to be in the cabinet as it seemed easier to water consistently in my 30% humidity home.

I have seen very mature Hoya carnosa, Hoya australis, and Hoya pubicalyx. I rarely see any other species well established in conservatories or greenhouses. These 3 species are also probably the most common ones to find for sale around me- so perhaps the more common hoya we see are the ones that don’t have to be restarted as often?

Ahhh I have a theory for unexplained Hoya deaths !!! I was thinking about it in relation to hydro culture but it could be the same for soil. I was talking to someone who is very knowledgeable about growing plants of the smokeable kind if you know what I mean. They were saying that it’s extremely important to flush your plants using a product like Florakleen that will dissolve the salt buildup from the nutrient solution. If the salts builds up on the roots it will cause a nutrient lockout which means the plant will longer be able to take in nutrients through those roots and will suffocate to death. Flushing using tap water is not super efficient, mine is around 200ppm. Using ro or distilled water would be better but I’ve noticed I significant difference using florakleen and you can use it in soil too(not sponsored 😂). I’ve definitely had plants in leca die this way. My guess would be that it happens with soil too just after a longer period of time. Anybody has any insight on this theory ? 😅

Hi Miro 👋🏼 Love your videos!! My question is , I watched an older video where you said as much as you love the look of the glass cabinets you did not think they were practical or optimal for housing plants. You mentioned fans inside not being adequate for air circulation and other reasons. What made you change your mind on this opinion?
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants 2 жыл бұрын
That is true! I am still unsure if the fans are adequate long term and it would be optimal if there was real exchange of fresh air as more serious enclosures for plants have. However, hoyas don’t seem to mind and it seems they thrive in there. I am not sure how larger leaved plants would do in there long term or even some of these hoyas, so I will still change the setup one more time that will allow for more airflow and so plants won’t be as crowded, but it will have to wait. There are still many disadvantages to having this cabinet and there are more cost-effective solutions in my opinion, but I also had to get it to try it out :) I was too curious. Also, I did attempt to hire a carpenter to make a glass cabinet that is much larger than this one but he quoted me over 100 euros just for the door frame with no glass which I thought was outrageously expensive so I decided to give this a go. I am liking it more though than I thought it would but I am still waiting to see how plants will do in it long-term. Hope that answers your question!

@@BasiePlants Thank you so much Miro for sharing your thoughts!! I was so curious what your reasoning was . I too have thought many times about finding a beautiful glass cabinet but have had the same concerns as you mentioned. I will be curious to hear your thoughts long term on this option!! I really value your thoughts as it is evident that you research and do your homework on all things green!! 💚

What I noticed about sudden hoya death 💀 is 1. When you let them to dry too much and then water, they get root rot. 2. When winter comes and days are darker and shorter, and you think that’s all right, I will water less and will be fine- ( grow light is too pricey bla bla bla) then they get root rot too and die around Christmas… Yes please hoya wish list!!
