A battery works by applying electrical energy to devices such as an LED to perform its designated work. Actually, there is a chemistry involved on this. First, let us look at the structure of a battery. We can see that at one end of it is a positive terminal or the anode which in this experiment is the copper and the other end is a negative terminal or the cathode which in this experiment is the aluminium foil and in between these two terminals is an electrolyte. A battery works by performing an oxidation-reduction process. At first, oxidation process occurs when the ions of the electrolyte combines with the positive terminal of the battery that causes electrons to be released. Then, reduction process occurs by the absorption of ions and free electrons by the negative terminal of the battery. With the release of electrons, electrical energy is produced which could substantially power devices and the absorption of electrons creates a closed loop in order to create a circuit.
