Maulen (nr Königsberg) / Ostpreußenlied - Brigitte Tomsett

My mother grew up on a farm in the village of Maulen, near Königsberg, East Prussia, Germany, 1938-45. World War 2 didn't reach them until January 1945 when, after being held prisoner for 3 days, they fled across the Frisches Haff as Soviet forces took the region. This video is made from the handful of photos that survived from then, along with a couple of others from later on & a postcard of the village. To accompany this, I asked my mother to sing 'The East Prussia Song' (Land Der Dunklen Walder), a pre-war song celebrating East Prussia. At the end there's the opening line of 'Kinderstunde', a kids radio show she used to listen to then, & part of a song about pigeons! She was 85 y.o. at the time of the recording & not used to singing into a microphone, so forgive the occasional wobble! There's no political agenda here, just a desire to preserve these memories for posterity.
Meine Mutter wuchs 1938-45 auf einem Bauernhof im Dorf Maulen bei Königsberg in Ostpreußen auf. Der Zweite Weltkrieg erreichte sie erst im Januar 1945, als sie nach dreitägiger Gefangenschaft über das Frische Haff flohen, als die sowjetischen Truppen die Region eroberten. Dieses Video besteht aus einer Handvoll Fotos, die von damals überlebt haben, zusammen mit ein paar anderen von später und einer Postkarte des Dorfes. Dazu bat ich meine Mutter, „Das Ostpreußenlied“ (Land Der Dunklen Walder) zu singen, ein Vorkriegslied, das Ostpreußen feiert. Am Ende gibt es die Eröffnungszeile von 'Kinderstunde', einer Kinderradiosendung, die sie damals hörte, & Teil eines Liedes über Tauben! Sie war 85 Jahre alt. zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme und nicht daran gewöhnt, in ein Mikrofon zu singen, also verzeihen Sie das gelegentliche Wackeln! Hier gibt es keine politische Agenda, sondern nur den Wunsch, diese Erinnerungen für die Nachwelt zu bewahren.

@@PeteWorld2010 Auf den Spuren meiner Mutter : Habe ich vor einiger Zeit eine Reise nach Königsberg unternommen. Dafür habe ich Kyrillische Buchstaben und kleine Wörter gelernt, ein westliches Hotel und einen Flug gebucht. In Königsberg bin ich mit der Tram und Bus gefahren. Rauschen, Cranz etc. besucht. So habe ich meine Vergangenheit bewältigt.

Your mom sung the Song of East Prussia so beautifully from her memory. The story of what happened in East Prussia at the end of WW2 is one of the saddest that I have ever heard. I actually shed tears the first time I heard about it. It is my hope that the history and traditions of the people who once lived in East Prussia will be preserved for posterity for future generations.

@@patriciabrenner9216 I see you don't like facts getting in the way. My mother was a child at the time, as we're her sisters, & my grandfather was too old to be called up. They were simply struggling to make a living on a moderate sized farm a long way from the fighting, which only reached them towards the end of WW2. If you know your history, the NAZIs ran a severe police state & any sign of opposition to them carried severe penalties. As an English person who was very glad that Nazi-ism was defeated, I'm sure that that part of my family were good people who were engulfed in something horrendous.

Of course it's true that some/many Germans voted in AH but he then abolished democracy, controlled the media & it was suicidal to even hint at opposing the Nazis. The German side of my family took no part in WW2 as such, but had their home and livelihood swept away by the devastating consequences that AH's actions brought about. Best wishes to you

@@evagolischewski6654 If you understand that there was little more than Nazi controlled radio to listen to then, then a family of young girls with middle-aged farming parents wouldn't have too much idea of the evil that was going on. There was no freedom to express opposition to the Nazis. Many Germans only found out the truth after the war. for example, My mother has told me how shocked her mother was when she was told about the concentration camps.
