Retired Chief John Kimani Chege, who was in charge of Lower Subukia location for many years, was a young man when the Lari massacre happened. Now 84 years, he says he used to see both Chief Luka wa Kahangara and Chief Makimei wa Kuria. On the day the Lari massacre took place, Chief Luka was reportedly warned by his policemen that he was about to be attacked but he ignored the warning. He speculates that perhaps the policemen had been recruited by Mau Mau, which would explain why they hid and never fired their guns. After Luka's death, his father was arrested and charged with murder, then hanged in Githunguri after their appeal was rejected. His father's business was destroyed and dairy cows confiscated by the colonial government. His mother was also jailed when she couldn't raise a hefty fine imposed on her when she was found guilty of taking the oath. The interview also provided insights into the role of relatives and the church during this difficult period. He also narrates how Independence Day was celebrated in Lari, and how the people of Lari bought land in Subukia after independence. #maumau #kenyanhistory #githunguri #africanliberation
