Do you think that the horses appreciate what you're doing? Like, do you ever get the sense that they're thinking, "Thank God the farrier's here; my frogs are itching something awful." (Or something like that. I don't know how horses think.)

some horses have like super sensitive hooves so its uncomfortable but still satisfying just like trimming your nails, but for most horses without diseases like navicular, its very satisfying, my horse falls asleep

Why do you burn the hoof with the horseshoe before nailing it on?

I would guess that he is doing it that way to see if the shoe is sitting properly on the hoof and it's not leaving any gaps. Because it would be uncomfortable to have your feet tilted because of the height difference on the shoe.

the term is hot shoeing, it burns and chars the hoof where you can see exactly where the shoe is on the hoof, its like a little liner to make sire its fitting properly
