A masterpiece of 20th Century French chamber music, Ravel's Piano Trio would, some might say, be better left alone and not tampered with. However, this sterling orchestration by Tortelier is really rather good and puts a whole new complexion on the piece. To my ears, he has used the Ravel of "Ma Mere L'Oye" and "Daphnis Et Chloe" as his starting points. The sound is wonderful, the Ulster Orchestra rising to the challenge brilliantly. And, of course, the Chandos engineering is characteristically top-notch.....

Wonderful arrangement! We can hear Daphnis sound sometimes in it.

Dave Hurwitz sent me. I LOVE the piano trio, and by considering this as s separate work, I find it quite lush and lovely as well. Perhaps Ravel may have also approved...?

This is interesting. I've always known this piece (okay, "always" is a slight exaggeration!) because the original Trio versiont features in one of my favourite films, "Un Coeur en Hiver" (with the delicious Emmanuelle Beart and the always watchable Daniel Auteuil). Auteuil and his business partner run a violin repair workshop in Paris for elite musicians; Beart plays such a musician.

This rhythm comes from Basque Country. We know it as Hernando’s Hideaway.

As orchestrations go, this is top notch. My problem with this (as is my problem with Ravel's own orchestration of his own music) is that the intimate quality of the original is lost. It is very difficult for orchestral music to achieve the same level of intimacy as chamber/solo works. While I enjoy this orchestation, give me the original please!

The fact is that virtually all of Ravel’s music is orchestral in character, something which he knew all too well. I applaud the efforts of informed composers and conductors trying to find the orchestral essence of the works left unorchestrated by the master himself. This is one of the most authentic attempts I have ever heard in my life! Chapeau, Maestro!!

Listening to this reminds me of the almost inhuman, flawless genius Ravel had for orchestration. Very noteworthy try but no subtlety nor relevance to the original.
