The comfort of Debussy‘s music is out of this world, and irreplaceable

Gorgeous. Debussy would have been proud.

The complete "Images Oubliees" weren't published until 1977 but, written in 1894, they belong to the same period as "Afternoon Of A Faun" and early drafts of "Pelleas". The second part appears elsewhere as "Sarabande". Kocsis has shown admirable insight into Debussy's orchestral voice of the mid-1890s, his arrangements being very convincing. The first part, "Lent", is very beautiful....

I love how it's called "images oubliees" which means "forgotten images".... they are so beautiful, and the fact that they were hidden somehow makes everything even more beautiful

As I listened this morning, the Lent movement had me thinking of 20th Century British pastoral orchestral music which, I think, was strongly influenced by Debussy's way with poignant harmony. The man himself was something of an Anglophile so.....who knows?

Actually, the same could be said of the other two movements as well, even the brilliant and joyous treatment of the French tune in the third.

Vaughan-Williams studied with Ravel, didn't he, Max? And, yes, I hear Debussy's influence in so much 20th Century British pastoral, in both orchestral and chamber music, as well as in works for piano. If I were asked to choose the most revolutionary and influential composer of the 20th, I believe I'd choose Debussy over Stravinsky.
