After reading the ingredient lists and seeing the price of fuel packs, it made me investigate homemade versions. I'm settling on Cyclic dextrin as a base, avoiding Maltodextrin. Adding some flavour, sweetness and electrolytes with a bit of powdered sports drink is progressing quite well.

Nice! If it's working for you and you're hitting your fuelling requirements then that's the most important thing

I’m a very reluctant convert to the Maurten bandwagon. They’re so expensive but they’re the only thing I’ve found to date that I can stomach while running at race pace. I’d love to find a cheaper alternative.

Difficult isn't it? Not sure how feasible this is for you and you may be doing this already but just keep your Maurten products for very specific run sessions and racing, and trial some other products and lower doses during other training runs where your carb needs and risk of GI issues are lower

@@NutritionTriathlon Yup, that's exactly what I'm doing. Keeping the Maurten for the race-pace sessions and supplementing them with some different gels and carb/electrolyte drinks. Thanks for the advice, James. I really appreciate that you always respond to comments on here :)

Many thanks, James, for your considerations. This is a question I was asking myself and you helped me solve: I am going to keep with SIS Beta Fuel gels, as they are perfect for me. Best regards from Barcelona !

Trialled Maurtens to see what all the fuss was about. They made me extremely unwell. Back to my trusty haribo and SiS gels.
