Tried their drink mix first time last weekend and I am sold. The 320mix was superb and surprisingly super easy on my stomach with zero gi discomfort even after the whole bottle at z2-medium intensity. But I guess no sodium Bicarbonate in the “normal” mix? Energy levels were steady and when blood sugar felt a bit low within 10-15min after a sip energy was back. Surprisingly I felt hungry (! Not lack of energy but actual hunger) instead of sickness which I usually feel 3h into a ride when using high carb drink mixes and was keen to eat bars even towards the end of the ride. Downside is for sure the cost - probably will only use these for races and very long rides rather than long ish training sessions.

Yeah, no sodium bicarb in their normal drink mixes. Cool to hear you've got on so well with Maurten's stuff. Agree about the cost and the use case - I do similar!

i have always had stomach issues with gels or food, always raced fasted because of this, until i tried maurten gels and believe me they are a one way trip...simply the best out there.

That's awesome to hear that they've improved things for you! Racing fuelled Vs fasted is a game changer

Well, Primoź Roglic uses it, so...I'll take a box! 🤣

Great video, as a suggestion, could you go one by one of each proved supplements?
@NutritionTriathlon Жыл бұрын
Thank you 🙂 great idea. I have gone through some of them in passing in other videos but I would like to go through them properly. I have quite a few other videos planned at the moment, but once I can I will cover the other supplements!

Hey man! great video. Question regarding the no-benefit for marathon or long distance event. If you take it for 400m repeats, and are able to perform better on those compared to without the product, wouldn´t that extrapolate then to marathon???
@NutritionTriathlon Жыл бұрын
Depends on personal physiology and whether those 400m transfer to faster marathon running. What does that individual specifically need to work on to improve their marathon time? More aerobic easy work? Raising their vo2 max? Improving lactate threshold? The answer isn't simple, and hence it's a difficult one and there isn't much evidence available. The answer is 'maybe' but not definitely, and so then you have to weigh it up against the risks (and cost) of taking the supplement.

Isn't baking soda sodium bicarbonate? If we took the correct dosage, would it give the same/similar results?
@NutritionTriathlon Жыл бұрын
Yep it is, and so in theory, yes! However, personally I'd feel a bit uncomfortable doing that or suggesting it. Issues around incorrect dosing, additional ingredients, baking soda vs baking powder or similar products. Feel like the risk with this one is a little higher than say making your own carbohydrate drink.

I take baking soda in water with pink salt before workouts and it is a game changer.

It would be very interesting if someone was to do a video where they repeated a high intensity session a week later to see if there were any significant benefits from taking Maurtens bicarbonate, or even with normal bicarbonate *wink wink, nudge nudge *
@NutritionTriathlon2 ай бұрын
Haha, this is a good idea! The big problem if I were to do this myself would be the placebo effect - it's too easy! There was a study that did look at Maurten's bicarb system in cyclists, but it more specifically looked at GI distress/reduction. You can read more about it here: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10866843/ As with most studies, there were some pros and cons, but it does suggest a clear benefit to Maurten's bicarb and a better buffering capacity, but the effect on performance needs to be investigated further!

Couldn't I just mix in some baking soda with my Maurten Gel 100? Let's find out XD
@NutritionTriathlon8 ай бұрын
I'm not sure it will work mixing it with the gel, as the gel is performed as a hydrogel. But let me know you get on 😊

beta alanine made the list. would it be benefical for marathon and marathon training?
@NutritionTriathlon Жыл бұрын
Same sort of thing as sodium bicarbonate. Helps with shorter, higher intensity intervals and not specifically to long distance running. There's a potential it could help with long term training adaptations, but it isn't clear cut
@CraigConleeАй бұрын
@@NutritionTriathlonwhat do you suggest for marathon race?
@NutritionTriathlonАй бұрын
Honestly I'd just focus on nailing the basic nutrition. Carb loading, race breakfast and then race fuelling. Get those right and you'll get the biggest benefit
@lwrncl832916 күн бұрын
beta alanine seems beneficial for 400-800m runners

How long before a race should i take this, and is a 10k race suitable to take it??
@NutritionTriathlon7 ай бұрын
Yeah this would be suitable for a 10km, but there isn't loads of data to support its use for an event of that timeframe. It might help a bit though. Maurten advise consuming 90 minutes before your intended start
@theandroids6 ай бұрын
Maurten , the Apple of nutrition. lmao Ridiculous prices.
@NutritionTriathlon6 ай бұрын
It is very expensive for what it is! There was a recent research paper showing that this product did essentially completely remove any side effects - but I'm still not sure it quite justifies the price!
@theandroids6 ай бұрын
@@NutritionTriathlon Indeed. It definitely dosent justify it, especially since the majority of other brands don't have side effects on people and there are so many to choose from. Marketing is a powerful thing.
@NutritionTriathlon6 ай бұрын
That's not exactly true, at least if we're talking about sodium bicarbonate. A huge reason that more athletes don't use it is the significant risk of gastro upset. If we're talking about gels and drinks, then yeah
