It's Lewisia Rediviva (Bitteroot), in a field of penstemon roezli. So named for Meriwether who first collected it. When the collected specimen finally arrived a few years later on the east coast and water was added-voila- rediviva. (It revived). Important food of the first peoples. Love that area and those rocks.

You can't walk along picking up "littles," get you rock pick out. The whole mountains out there are jasper. Clear the top soil away and swing your rock pick. We got two types from Richardson's Ranch years ago. Right under our feet. Fire jasper and something else, the name escapes me.😁

Maury Mountain! Wow you guys did really well!! We were back there in June and didn't get a lot of stuff but there are loads of tiny pieces everywhere it's crazy. It's harder to hunt with tiny humans in tow though haha! Also PSA to folks going out there, we got a flat tire in the parking lot there, probably from a sharp rock based on what the tire guy said. So be prepared!! Lots of nice places to camp in the Ochoco NF too.
@largent45 Жыл бұрын
That was some beautiful material and it looked very abundant out where you guys were! The Maury mountain is pretty well known material. I would have expected it to be harder to find than that. The stuff you found was pretty amazing! Thanks for sharing your finds and for showing how great the material was. I definitely want to see you guys go back again! Thanks Jared and Sarah!

While green and brown are probably the most common, there is also red, gold/yellow, and if you're really lucky, there is a seam of purple as well. I've been there many times. Looks like you did pretty good.
@CurrentlyRockhounding Жыл бұрын
I didn't know there was any red or purple out there!
@spetkovsek57 Жыл бұрын
@@CurrentlyRockhounding The red is fairly common. It's usually a green crust where it meets the surrounding host rock, but has lots of red inside. I've only found the purple in one seam. I've managed to find it twice, but haven't been back for a number of years, so who knows if it's all been dug out.

Just had to watch the video. So I was something like 3-6 miles from the bank of the Columbia River Rock Hounding! Believe I was finding serpentine. Hey I can tell you that flower is a bitterroot. Edible if harvested before they bloom. Back to rockhounding, I was thinking the specimens found turned out to be greenstone. Then I was harvesting pegmatite, believe to contain tourmaline crystal. Now I will mention the rock I brought home, I was cleaning it. Left it in tap water overnight. Moss grew out of it when I left it overnight to dry out. Would that rock be an agate??? Miles from the Columbia River bank up and over some plateaus to this spot. So there was no running water here for eon.

My understanding is that according to the National Historic Preservation Act, anything over 50 years older should be evaluated for significance. Most cans won't be significant, but that's the age where that starts getting considered.
