THIS PLACE:
Dedicated in 1914, Rosehill Mausoleum was designed by architect Sidney Lovell. It is the largest mausoleum in Chicago and has two levels, the lower level being partially underground. The interior is constructed almost entirely of marble. The floors are Italian Carrara marble. There are many small family-owned rooms with heavy bronze gates. Some of these private rooms feature stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany among other artists. Notable internments include Aaron Montgomery Ward, his business rival Richard Warren Sears, Milton Florsheim and John G. Shedd, philanthropist and president of Marshall Field & Company.
THIS CHANNEL:
_________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

There’s no stained glass like Tiffany. Absolutely gorgeous! Sadly it looks like the ceiling is being pulled down by that gorgeous light in the Straus crypt, or there is water above the crypt causing plaster to start to loosen. 😢

How wonderful! I live several blocks away from Rosehill and it is very beautiful. Those are indeed original Tiffany windows that decorate the "creme de la creme" of Chicago's deceased upper class, back in the day. You also may want to check out May Chapel. It's actually really creepy!, it is said that there is still one unburied casket in the crypt behind it that no one ever claimed. Maybe the cemetery finally buried it, but it was still there in the late 80's. Maybe Potter Palmer had it buried, he owned Rosehill and sold it in the 90's I believe. Thanks for the tour!

Those stained glass windows are SOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL!! I once took a trip to a place that manufactures and cleans stained glass windows!! Some of the windows in the Cathedral where I volunteer and attend were being cleaned there, and the volunteers went on a field trip to see how they get cleaned, and how stained glass is actually made!! It was ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING to see!! Thanks for the video, Ron!! Take care, and stay safe all!! XXXX

Hi Ron, your at my favorite cemetery cause I live only 10 minutes away walking distance. Just love the stain glasses in those private crypts. Since you been going there have you ever walked up in the middle section of the hallway stairs.? Can't remember but believe it's on either main floor or second floor. You'll find section upstairs with glass urns. It has many interesting people of that era. It's one second I've always enjoy. There's these long couches very bright upstairs. That you will enjoy reading many fascinating names. I called it the private room. Hope you seek it out if you haven't yet.

The stained glass is just beautiful but I'm sort of torn between loving it and yet trying to justify the expense that went into it all and it just sits there and at this point in time probably visited by few. There are these vaults worth thousands of dollars vs tons of unmarked graves without even a flower.

@@ghostcityshelton9378 totally agree and I guess the rich just want that status symbol out there for eternity. I remember years ago a boy committed suicide and his mother was devastated and posted on fb and people all agreed to take his ashes all over the world. The mother put ashes in little bags and mailed and then the people would post when and where they released him. I think this would be a great final way to go.

Tom Mix died in a horrific car accident on October 12, 1940, 50 miles North of Tucson, Arizona. He was driving a yellow Cord Roadster car. He was going 80 miles per hour and he came into a road construction site and crashed. He had a lot of money and traveler's checks on him. There was a funeral for him in Glendale, California in the Little Church of the Flowers where many family members and friends and fans were in attendance. Among them were western stars Buck Jones, Harry Carey, William S. Hart, Gene Autry and Gary Cooper. On Dec. 5, 1947, 300 fans gathered in a spot just a couple hundred yards north of the crash site where a stone monument was erected to Tom Mix Gene Autry and Ed Echols spoke at the ceremony, where tears flowed freely as "Empty Saddles in the Old Corral" drifted out across the quiet desert.

I couldn't help but notice all the damage from roof leakage in some of these crypts. Why was that not cleaned up? The broken cement piled in front of one of the windows made me cringe. It could have broken that beautiful stained glass. These families paid a fortune to be in this mausoleum and look at the damage. So sad and disrespectful. They truly are forgotten if no one is taking care of their final resting place. I saw benches and chairs for one to sit in during visits and wondered how long it had been since anyone sat there. Since anyone cared to even go and pay their respects. No matter how lovely the place is (and this one was stunning) it doesn't matter if no one cares. This was such treat to see all the Tiffany glass, they are treasures to be sure. Like you I loved the ships. As a fan of JRR Tolkien I couldn't help but think of his lore proclaiming all souls sail into the west to a far green country with a swift sunrise. It was his vision of heaven.

Many of those are definitely real Tiffany Studios windows, a few of the best will even be signed by L. C. Tiffany. I grew up near a twin of this mausoleum, by the same architect, and if you can get close you can often find the signatures in the lower right corner.

@@reynemayer2942 Oh Reyne, you are fortunate! Tiffany was the most amazing artist. I had a family heirloom antique large hanging lamp that depicted different types of fruit on it. my mother often said that it might be a Tiffany, although we never found any signature on it.

Thanks for your work. Tom Mix the movie star is in the incomparable Forest Lawn in Glendale California and he has one of those brass plates in the ground with his signature on it. This is a very elegant mausoleum, it does need some upkeep.
