It really is a great shotgun. I shimmed the gap at the metal rail attachment to the forend with very thin brass shims and epoxy. Took a lot of the play out and made it sturdier. Mine is the 88 Security version holding two extra rounds and allows for a bayonet lug mount and end cap to be installed. I do have combat training in close - action bayonet fighting. And yes, there were plenty of times my training opponent bayoneted me along with a few slashes. Rubber bayonet still hurts.

you're welcome. I decided to shoot and post these videos because I wasn't finding REALLY good information on youtube for the Maverick 88 (mostly typical reviews) but there are some good disassembly vids. I had to call and email Maverick and Havlin...they were very helpful. I'm also new to the modifications and thought it would help others to share my mods on the Maverick 88. KZbin vids helped some...they just needed a little bit more detail. I'm glad the videos helped you. cheers.

I got lucky finding an unfired maverick 88 at a pawnshop for $119 out the door. If that wasn't good enough mine turned out to be one of the models with a forend nut like the mossberg 500. Apparently certain chain stores like walmart stock these from time to time you just have to know what to look for. It will save you money in the long run not having to switch the whole assembly. You can spot the forend nut sticking up without even having to handle the gun

I just found out that My Mossberg 500 uses the same forend as the Mav 88, with the rails molded into the plastic. I was thinking about swapping the forend for a nicer one, but I'm wondering if the Mav 88 forend is preferable to an upgrade in a couple of ways (besides cost) - it makes the gun lighter (no steel action tube) and it doesn't wear off the finish of the mag tube as much as a metal action tube would. Is the action smoother after you installed the the steel action tube?
@MrMnmn911
@MrMnmn911 11 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't use epoxy. I have seen a vid somewhere on yt by someone that drilled some holes on his original forend and just attached some picatinny rails...but I never found a vid on how it worked out. I really do suggest changing the forend. You're doing something to a weapon that fires an explosive bullet. I'd save the money and do it right. I wouldn't want it to malfunction on me when I needed it most...but that's just my humble opinion.

I put a 7 5/8'' action slide with a vintage walnut corncob forearm and stock, on my Maverick 88, it does not mare or scratch up the mag tube. it functions perfectly. the wood furniture added a little weight but that helps ease recoil, adding the wood furniture and the new action slide improved the look and function of the already good looking and great functioning shotgun.

Excellent instructional video. I plan to do this modification on my Maverick 88 as well as I think that long-term, a metal-to-metal connection between the rails and forend tube will be more robust than metal-to-plastic. One thing I'm curious about is wear on the mag tube. The original forend appears to have plastic-to-metal contact between the action tube and the mag tube. What can you tell us about the contact between the metal action tube you installed and the mag tube, and how that might affect the bluing on the mag tube?
@MrMnmn911
@MrMnmn911 9 жыл бұрын
ChicagoJohn The wear should be "normal". The new action tube is ordered is an original manufactured tube from Mossberg. This is what is used on their 590 model. The wear on the mag tube would be as it would be with other Mossberg products. I did decide to re-install the original 88 grip. If you haven't already please visit my main channel and check out "My Maverick 88" playlist. I posted a video review last year on all my Maverick 88 accessories after using it during a 6 hour Fighting Shotgun class. Thanks for watching and the thumbs up.

MrMnmn911 Following up, is there a reason you decided to go back to the original forend? I now have an action tube and extended nut for it, but haven't yet installed it. If it doesn't offer any advantages in terms of making the action less binding, for example, I'm thinking I'll stick with the factory molded forend for now too. Just curious as to your reasons for switching back to it.

I've been watching your video but am still having Problems I have a mossburg 500 and I bought the same forend. It appears when I put it in the threads don't come out enough for me to screw the cap. I have about 1/4 in left of space but I'm met with the same resistance I feel my action tube hits the end of the inside of the forend any ideas? Maybe wrong size I don't know
@MrMnmn911
@MrMnmn911 8 жыл бұрын
Hi. When you meet that last resistance, try tapping it with your rubber mallet, or something else. The rubber worked perfectly for me. They only cost about $3.00, so they are worth it, if you don't already have one. so, using a rubber mallet, or something covered with a cloth to prevent any damage to your new tube, hammer it past the resistance. I don't think you'll do any damage if you pound it all the way past. I just choose not to. Then with just enough threads showing, I screwed the end nut onto it. Using the "castle key", I then began tightening the end nut on and this is what will pull the tube the rest of the way through. If you don't have a castle key, a butter knife works great too. Please let me know if this helps. Thanks for watching and a thumbs up.

The plastic isn't molded OVER the action tube on the 88...the plastic IS the action tube. Notice how the action bars are pinned into the plastic on the rear, and the ribs molded into the plastic inside the tube.
@MrMnmn911
@MrMnmn911 3 жыл бұрын
There are various designs of the Maverick 88 forend. Some are molded OVER the action tube, some are fully plastic, as you've described. When I began making My Maverick 88 videos, I did countless searches on KZbin of this. There were many, many vidoes of people actually cutting the plastic molding off, and exposing the tube, showing owners that they did not have the buy the action tube and could simply cut off the molding, if they wanted to replace the grip. Some videos did show that that was not true with their model. Mossberg manufactured different tubes.

Hi 1wickekd2008 that is a tube end nut wrench, also called a castle key. It's used like a screwdriver to insert into the slots of the tube end nut so you can turn the nut to take it off and tighten it back on. They don't cost too much. If you absolutely can't afford one, you can use anything else you can find around the house. Some people use a butter knife which works perfectly. Thanks for watching and liking.

I ordered a magpul forend for my 88. Can I possibly cut off the plastic forend to expose the action slide so I don’t have to buy a 70 dollar action slide and only buy a ring for the slide
@MrMnmn911
@MrMnmn911 4 жыл бұрын
If you're completely certain that your particular serial number is one that was manufactured with the full slide. Some were, some were not. I've seen videos where some did what you want to do, and it worked. I've seen some where they cut off the plastic forend only to discover it was not a full action slide. I'd reach out to Mossberg customer service to make sure. They are very helpful. I mean really, really helpful. Hope this helps.

It's a pretty simple procedure. If you know how to clean your shotgun, you know that you'll have to remove the forend grip. Everything else is pretty easy. Just slide your new grip onto your new action tube assembly and then tighten the tube end nut. The reason I made the video is because I saw many conflicting comments on other videos saying this wasn't possible or that it was too hard to accomplish. This is not true. It's a very easy process. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I'm having a really hard time getting the nut to thread on. I got the tube hammered all the way in, and thread is showing on three of the four sides. But its that little bit at the bottom that I can't get it to thread on. Any tips?

Hi John, are you using a tube end nut wrench? I'm not certain why you can't get it to tighten all the way.

MrMnmn911 hey man thanks a ton for the reply. I made a Reddit post about it and included a photo album of my situation imgur.com/a/6eW8M It's hard to see but the little notch on the very bottom is the one that's not giving me room to thread it, the other three have room.

I'd try using the rubber mallet on it to see if you can get it to go the rest of the way. Looks like you have just a tad bit to go. Let me know how it goes, or if you figure it out. Thanks.

+John Smith I just did this work early this week and was having the same issue. I removed the tube again from forend. Then I marked the portion of the nut and tube where is it supposed to start threading. After inserting the tube on forend and trying again, it took a while but I finally got it smoothly. Be patient as cross-threading will render the tube unusable.

See the video description for the action slide you would need. I don't know if there is a wood forend for the Maverick 88. But any part that fits the 500 or 590 will work. I suggest you email Mossberg for specific information. They are extremely helpful.

In the end...it was not a good option for me. You can see my full review of all my Maverick 88 accessories after I took a 6 hour Fighting Shotgun training class. I have it posted in "My Maverick 88" playlist. You can watch from my main KZbin channel page. However I had already decided to remove this fore grip when I took the class and I explained why. Thanks for watching and liking. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Yes. I wanted the option of being able to change the forend grip with any grip I preferred. Having a action tube assembly that isn't "molded" onto the assembly will allow for changing just the grip any time I'd like without changing the entire action assembly.

You're welcome. Correction. I have the 20 inch barrel not the 18 inch barrel. However, please do check at the Havlin Sales website they have a very thorough instruction on which assembly to purchase. And you can always email them to ensure you're ordering the right one. And you can also visit the Mossberg website and click on the Contact Us link to email them with any quesitons. Both Havlin Sales and the Mossberg people are very helpful.
