This scene shows how awesome and loyal Rooster is as a team mate. He will never leave you, always has your back, takes one for the team, sacrifices himself to save your life. “That should be us down there” -teammates who didn’t have to do push ups because they lived thanks to Rooster “Now you know a little something about Rooster” aka now you know he’s willing to risk his life to save yours.

I love how Hangman And Rooster parallel Maverick and Iceman's character flaws, but instead of Rooster being Mav and Hangman being Iceman, Rooster is more like Iceman (both overly causiouse and hesitate) and Hangman is like Maverick (goes rogue and lacks teamwork). It's a nice switchup I appreciate.

According to a couple of actual fighter pilots, who talked about this movie, this part is probably the only accurate part of the movie, in the sense that whenever they do dogfighting training exercises, the old guys always kick the crap out of the newer guys. Something to be said for experience.

Although I admit its not super obvious, and its not much of a twirl of the F18. Somewhat subtle I guess, but it does twirl a little.
