I purchased a set of MAVIC Ksyrium UST's last year after doing my own research and watching GCN. I had been very frustrated with the Schwalbe Pro 1s tubeless tires. The Schwalbes were next to IMPOSSIBLE to mount onto my HED Ardennes II's which were "tubeless ready" provided you installed rim tape. The Schwalbe beads are massive and difficult to seat let alone get onto the wheel. Once on, you can get "wheel hop" due to unseated beads. Have to tell you I couldn't be happier with MAVIC UST. I have not experienced any trouble whatsoever in mounting or removing the Yksion tires. I have to point out however that the tires are not long lived but they are grippy (as one might expect is the tradeoff). Anyone thinking of taking the plunge to tubeless my advice is don't use wheels which require rim tape to seal the spoke holes. I've found this system to be a ticking time bomb failure point. Eventually the sealant will get underneath the tape and cause the adhesive to fail and thus leak sealant/air so bad that it will not self-seal. Go UST. That's my 2 cents.

Lol. I had the exact same issue with my dt swiss tubeless. Hit a pothole and ripped the sidewall. It was nearly impossible to get the old tire off without levers, and when everything is covered in sealant. I'm on the fence since they never once flatted in the 5000 miles I put on up to that point

The Great Falloni hi, thanks for watching my video and leaving a comment. Tubed tires definitely leave me with a sense of security, I know I can always fix them, but tubeless is a better technology with a better ride feel, and now I have zero sense of security on a long solo ride.
@davidide15255 жыл бұрын
One advantage to tubeless that is not often mentioned is, not unlike a tubular tire, air can only escape through the puncture , so it probably will stay on the rim long enough to stop. I went tubeless I 2011 after a 50 mph rear blow out on a steep descent. Tire came off the rim immediately and wrapped around the brake , I catapult over the bars and the aftermath was quite grim. I ride tubeless and will put up with some minor hassles for the gains. Oh, try carrying a smaller tube than you would for the same size in a clincher. It makes it easier to get in and going and you only need it to get home. I subscribe and really like your reviews and ideas .

"...and you only need it to get home". How do you repair a punctured tubeless tyre that has not sealed so you can go tubeless again? Thanks.

My Mavic Yksion USTs developed bubbles on the sidewall of the tubeless tyre within 600km and Mavic are finding all sorts of excuses for NOT replacing the tyre. I'm wondering if they are now getting too many of these defects to replace them all. I wonder if they should be recalling these tyres until they fix the problem. I wouldn't recommend Yksion UST Tubeless to anyone.

Bruce Chastain - cycling stuff Hi Bruce, thanks for watching my video and taking the time to leave a comment. Despite all the benefits of tubeless, knowing what I know now, I'm not sure if I’d buy tubeless again, but the ride quality is absolutely amazing.

Agreed. It's one of those technologies that when they work, they work awesome, but when they don't, it's catastrophic. Even with a gashed tire, you can repair it with a tire boot (or even duct tape or whatever you find on the side of the road), put a new tube in it and you're back on the road. I think they're best left to racing or to near perfect road riding. When I built my first custom bike, I went over board with the fancy schmancy stuff. I just built my 2nd and have a much stronger and more reliable bike that isn't as finicky about tuning. I want to spend more time on the road than in a shop.

Do you know what's the difference between the SL and standard model UST? Is it just the hubs?
@mizzorian4 жыл бұрын
SL is super light and UST is their tubeless system
@ayowser014 жыл бұрын
@@mizzorian I figured it out. I ended up buying the standard model. You're right: the sl has lighter spoke nipples, hub and qr. Also the hub uses their id360 ratchet system, which is theoretically superior.

Looking at Cosmic Pro Carbon UST Disc. tires getting a bad rap and cassette wobbling some people mention. Have you put different tires other than mavic on yours? Can you go wider or is it ok to go to 28mm instead of 25mm they provide with purchase? Price is right on these- just a bit nervous on ditching the mavic tires after they wear out. Appreciate any thoughts.
@bodoprobst5 жыл бұрын
What tyre width were you using when you had the mounting issue ? The rim width is 19mm internal, so 28mm tyres should be the choice as they roll faster than 25's, have more grip and corner better

Just had to replace my tyres. Exactly the same experience too. Firstly, they were utterly welded on! The glue obviously turns into some sort of superglue after about a year. It took my at least an hour to take them off, having to cut through some weird cotton fibres that had appeared and breaking my two carbon tyre levers. Finally used a screwdriver and even then struggled and got some scratches on the rims. All the advertising saying they are easy to take off is bullshit. I like the actual wheel though.

I have these and they are in the shop. One tire with blisters, and both wheels have issues. One, the rear is now chunky and not spinning freely. Two, the front hub is loose with play. Caution on getting these. Also, if you do have to get the tubeless tire off, forget it, it will nearly break you.

Hi Thanks for posting this well considered review. I was planning to make the same purchase, particularly after I too watched the video that demonstrated how easy it is to fit the Mavic tubeless tires on to the Mavis UST rim. Ummmm, your video demonstrates a very different outcome. What a drag, and what a disappointment on your planned ride getting cut short. Watching everyone struggling to fit the tire was almost painful to watch, and an entire hour, maybe Mavic is not ready from prime time. You did not mention if when removing the tire caused the sealant to flow out and make a mess, was that the case in this instance? Anyway, thanks for posting all the great content.

e 511 keV Hi, thanks for leaving a comment. Yes, the sealant was everywhere, from the puncture through us changing the tube, it made for a slippery experience. I do love this wheelset and after 3000 miles this was my only problem. I did have a sidewall blow out with tubed wheels as well and I needed to take a cab home, so in the end I do think its a good investment. I'm going to shoot a video with a local bike shop about what to do when this happens, should be up before Christmas, in case this wheelset is on your Santa list! Best Kevin

I've been running Mavic Comete UST for over a year now and have had zero issues. Last summer, I did a 210 mile ride from Seattle to Portland and had two punctures which self-healed. Given the ride was over 10 hours long and I was on a tight schedule to complete it and am glad I didn't have to deal with punctures. The Mavic UST tires are actually made by Hutchinson, using the high-end "11 Storm" compound - so, they are being made by a tire company in France (vs. cheaper compounds in China/Taiwan). For me, the upside of the UST system outweighs the downside.
