The sanctuary rises on a spur of rock (260 m) on the left margin of the river Marecchia, in a strategic position between Montebello, Pietracuta, Verucchio and San Marino.
His name brings us back to the ancient Romans who called him "Saxum Jani- Sasso di Giano" and probably there must have been a pagan temple dedicated to him.
Saiano formerly belonged to the territory and parish of Pietracuta, Diocese of Montefeltro. Then passed to the parish of St Peter of Montebello. His name frequently appears among the lists of castles that passed from one to the other lord.
The presence of the castle of Saiano is confirmed in a document of 1186.
The Clementini in volume III of the history of Rimini, says that in 1370 he owned it Galeotto Malatesta, who held there a castle with 6 pay equal to 15 guilders per month and contained 10 fireplaces, with the tower cylindrical strategic place of sighting and reporting, since the tower allows a visual triangulation between Verucchio-Saiano-Montebello-San Leo.
But the most important part of the complex is the Church, destination of pilgrimages and place of prayer seems since 1300. In 1356 there is talk of a sacred place where the Madonna of Saiano is kept, venerated and celebrated every year. A document of a Bishop around 1570 shows that "Saiano boasts not an ancient but very ancient Marian tradition!".
Inside the Church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, there is a statue of the Madonna in plaster (XVI century) placed in the high altar with the child sitting on his lap, almost wanting to separate from his mother to come to us his brothers.
Tradition tells that when the Madonna was transferred to the church of Montebello, miraculously several times in the morning was found in Saiano.
In the side chapels two frescoes of the end of 1500 (on the right the Madonna and Child and on the left Saint Anthony abbot).
There were two tombstones in the sanctuary: one remembered the grace received after the drought of 1893, the other remembers the restorations made in 1926 and is located in the floor before the entrance door.
For some time the sanctuary was abandoned and almost destroyed the statue (it seems on Easter night of 1967). In 1973, after the restoration, it was placed to the veneration of the faithful in the Church of Montebello.
Finally, after long years of restoration work, on August 15, 1996, the Shrine of Saiano was inaugurated by H.E. Mgr Mariano De Nicolò Bishop of Rimini.
The Sanctuary is particularly dear to the people of Valmarecchia and remembered for many graces received, in particular those related to drought and motherhood.
