interesting point on the chamber. I've learned the "mae mawashi" for the most part of my life as a karate guy, just close to my black belt i've learned to do the mawashi with the traditional view. Now there's this detail on the knee. We truly learn something new everyday.
@SENSEIJASON2 жыл бұрын
Oss, it can be performed many ways, but I believe the full trajectory of the kick is achieved when chambering with the knee up to the side! Best of luck with your training!

Good detail sensei. I'm a shodan in Iwama ryu Aikido and also just re-taking Karate couple of years ago. I agree totally about the details.. shodan means you know the basics..then you learn the more details that make the whole difference in the effectiveness of the technique.

Very good Job, Master Jason Leung ... i'm practicing traditional (not sport) Karate for many, many years and i was taught to initiate the move of mawashi geri with that "old" preparation of kicking leg that You briefly showed in the video ( at 1':02") and it actually is a little bit hard .... After many years i found a school/association that tries to combine the modern biomechanics knowledge with the tradition of Shotokan, that should always be respected and that's the riight path to follow, imho ... And that's what Your videos are showing, too ... Thank You ! OSS

Cheers. I will try this. Yes my sensei told me to lift the knee sideways first too. I told him you have better balance and speed going thru the middle close to your other knee but guess I have to do as Sensei says😂. Hell either that or I rather do a Muay Thai kick to replace it

If you have knoledge about self defense and do karate traditional for many years, i recomended kick mawashi geri like it was a mae geri, circular movement but the point of impact is in front of you not on the side, because with minimun mistake you can break your toes because in a real fight people can move faster and this kick can be a dangerous fail, kick mawashi geri like mae geri and you have a solid and easy kick with the traditional form, i saw some japanese senseis do that!! And is the best way.

Jason thanks for the great work. I hope you will cope with criticism. I have 2. 1. Is , if the kick starts with the knee facing 90 degrees to the direction you facing, what if there is no space on your side . Or at that point if the opponent takes the space between your floored leg and your raised knee. Wouldn't it be better that the knee raises facing forward, where the opponent is, and in case the opponent rushes into you , the knee will stop them . 2. Are you not mispronouncing the word karate. Being an art you teach, would it hurt if you pronounced it as the originators of the art pronounce it. Karate , instead of karari
@SENSEIJASON2 жыл бұрын
First thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! To answer your questions. 1. The way I teach roundhouse kick basics are strategically taught that way so one understands mechanics and proper torque. But as you pointed out there is no one way to perform. Having the knee chamber from the side, you perform the whole trajectory of the kick. I like this wide looping way because it avoids clashing with your opponent in front. I do perform the kick with the knee chambering in front as well, but it is situational. Often times however, I end up shin clashing with my opponent if we both raise our knees to the front. 2. I pronounce karate, with an American accent simply because that is how it is recognized in America. I was born here. And frankly I could pronounce it truly Japanese, but on the KZbin platform many of my viewers are in America. If you watch Jesse Enkamp, or Dojo Waku they both pronounce it the same way. OSS, Jason 🥋🔥

I noticed in real speed you don't lift your knee to the side but somewhere in between? The slow-mo is great technique, but real speed / real life is different. ;)

This is because in practice we go step by step. In real time it is more blended in. If I had been practicing with my knee always coming up to the front I would not be able obtain maximum swing and power.

Not sure what reverse snap kick is .I loved keage ( snap facing kick ) we did it in shotokan .Another description we used was inside mawashi geri to describe keage to the head or body.AlA Billy Jack.
@John-ob7dh2 жыл бұрын
Just watched the video of the reverse snap kick .Yes we practised that kick ,only diff is when I do it i connect with the outside edge of my foot .I bring my knee up half way across my chest ,then snap it up to connect with Edge of my foot ,left edge of foot to left side of opponents head. Its not a very powerful kick but more a stunning kick ,which gave me a split second to deliver a fast chudan right reverse punch .In fact even if I missed contact ,the fact my foot was waving around in the other guys face hid my set up reverse punch from his view .Ha Ha.Great days 1972 to 1980 my license is stamped all the way through with the shotokan tiger .Sensei Enoeda.

I am just one who follows karate and trying to compare the method of execution of strikes and blocks; and being unlearned in Karate I might have a wrong notion of how to perform one technique as I perceived. In this video the round house kick is executed, first by bringing up the kicking leg on the side before flinging it as a round kick. This execution of bringing up first the leg on the side will retard the momentum of the kick as compared to a direct kick from the ground flinging the kicking leg upward to the target. I think a round kick should not be so "round" or circular but elliptical or oblong.

@SENSEIJASON2 жыл бұрын
Mawashi geri is a wide trajectory kick. Yoko geri is directly to the side.
if you pick your knee up out to the side like that people will see it coming from a mile away, talk about telegraphing!, it will get stopped kicked immediately even by an old guy like me ha
