Hi guys, my name is Jason Leung. I am classically trained in Shotokan Karate Do in the USA. I hold the rank of 4th Degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate. In this video I present to you guys "The Classic Kata" of Shotokan Karate. The karate kata or karate forms included here, are part of kata series currently in progress, in which I will be filming the various other Shotokan Style Kata. Kata performed in this video in order: 1. Taikyoku Shodan 2. Heian Shodan 3. Heian Nidan 4. Heian Sandan 5. Heian Yondan 6. Heian Godan 7. Enpi 8. Jion 9. Bassai Dai 10. Kanku Dai In my humble opinion the purpose of kata, may have been originally for self defense, but the way many schools teach it now, and specifically the way I was taught was never in this context. Many who have experienced this amnesia of kata application attempt to go looking in the past, diving into history (which is not bad), but at the same time, I thought, why look back? I thought it was much better to look forward into the future of karate. Nowadays, I don't try to contemplate cookie cutter applications or bukai of the karate kata of shotokan. Rather I use them to help me develop a higher awareness of karate principles and my technique. Now when it comes to self defense, I just straight up practice self defense, and there have been many concepts and applications that are widely taught in other disciplines and styles. I'm talking about judo, jiu jitsu, kickboxing, wrestling, boxing. In conjunction with my karate, I incorporate what I find useful in all these styles, and make an entirely new one. Now your question may be is kata still relevant? My answer would be yes, but only to those seeking a martial arts lifestyle, for those seeking perfection of character, and especially to those who abide by the laws of budo and bushido. If you just however want to learn to punch and kick, join a kickboxing gym. Kata to me is the bridge between the physical and spiritual in martial art, it is like a mantra that one repeats, or a passage that one recites over and over. This in turn reveals the multitude of secrets that are only unlocked by the great. Many will read this, but only few (the true martial artists of the world) will understand. Those are some bad ass moves - thank you for sharing! For gaining the level of focus, balance, self-confidence and muscle memory required to utilize any of these blocks or strikes in a real-world exchange, nothing comes close to Kata. You have to learn how to use any and all of them correctly in a controlled setting before doing so against a live opponent. Well done.
@SENSEIJASON4 жыл бұрын
Love that comment so much, and totally can relate to what you are saying that things must be mastered in a controlled setting before trying to figure it out in real time sparring or combat. Though sometimes getting hit is the best way to wake up and make adjustments.

I once had a training partner 10 years ago who did nothing but kata. He didn’t practice Kumite at all. And keep in mind he was a shotokan guy like me. I always asked him to spar when we’d meet up with our usual group but he would always say no, that he was either too busy, housing injuries, or just not in the mood. I wasn’t pressuring him or anything, just like a friendly sparring match as I would with a few others in that local meet up group. Then one day after a year of him telling me no, he finally said yes. When we started he just stood in his kamae looking real stoic and zen like lol. I ended up faking a punch low and came over the top with a mawashigeri to the head. What happened next completely blew my mind. He basically did a high block and swept my kick down and up like the motion in Bassai dai and I was completely shook!! After that day I never underestimated him again and realized the importance of kata.

I mean sparring at least a little goes a long way to make sure what you learn and practice is applicable for real fighting. Not for sport mind you but in case you need to defend yourself in any scenario, it’s good to make sure you understand how certain strikes or blocks or counters work to fully implement what the forms provide. For example, I learned there are actually ton of grappling in the forms and are meant to takedown opponents.

Thank you for this! As you, I learned all these traditional kata and several more.. I have to tell you, I don't like the way fighting looks in the current times of sport karate. However, watching you do these kata brings me back to the clean powerful roots of Shotokan. To a point, I really appreciate how you move through the knee keeping low and the same level as you step. It's the little things that separate great from good.
@SENSEIJASON4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the way the sport karate competition executes kata is more of a gymnastics routine and drama show. What I look to bring back to the table of shotokan and the karate world is the purity of basic training and fundamentals. These are the fundamentals that once made karate a force to be reckoned with. Unfortunately many martial artists and modern fighters almost look down at karate like it's a joke. I do not believe this to be the case. Because if you adapt your karate to more modern styles, by also incorporating them into your training you will become a very powerful martial artist. -Jason

Beautiful to hear, kata is one thing I hear many retired practitioners never forget and always remember. Maybe not remember every kata step by step, but the feeling of training and the memories of kata training will always resonate. I know the feeling you speak of, when my instructor would always say one more time, and we'd do the kata..then he'd say one more time, so on.. But those trainings built my foundation and my character as a martial artist that can only uniquely be developed through hard Kata training. Many view kata as a dance or impractical. To me, anyone who says this has not practiced hard enough. I believe kata has many benefits, however my view is that is most beneficial in bridging the gap between the physical and spiritual in Budo. It gives the practitioner a sort of essence that can not be developed any other way. Thank you for watching and God Bless!

Hello Jason, for this time, yours explains are more importants than vidéo. I agree with you, karaté is rich, kumite, kihon, Kata...when you grow , you understand the whole karaté. Before a kumite, you feel sensations, before a Kata , you get the spiritual wealth., it is a whole and when you know it, you improve. Thank you for your vidéo. Phil.
@SENSEIJASON4 жыл бұрын
OSS, yes Phil. Although the history of karate is fascinating, many become to scholastic and rather spend too much time theorizing about the “secrets” of karate. The only way to attain high level is to train. Kata kihon and Kumite. Bunkai for me is just trying to be creative or for show. Even Sensei Rick Hotton agrees with me that many people spend too much time contemplating the nature or correct bunkai of kata. He agrees with me that it is more of an exercise of the mind body and spirit.

Excellent presentation(s), thank you. Nothing like this was available in my time. I studied Shotokan in Santa Barbara, CA in the late 60's, finally reaching I-Kyu before reality got in the way... I was tested for I-Kyu by Yaguchi Sensei (AAKF/JKA, Los Angeles, under Hidetaka Nishiyama). I was assigned Bassai Dai for my black belt, but really wanted Kanku Dai. When I got to the main dojo of JKA in Tokyo (long story) to train for my black belt, the sensei asked me what kata had been given me. I hemmed and hawed, and eventually said "I don't know - I seem to have forgotten") He took one look at me and said "Bassai Dai". Oh well, what did I know? The teacher I started out with in SB (who eventually became a bounty hunter) used to say "If you want to get good in bar fights, you have to go into bars and choose guys off.... :) I remember everyone (including me) trying to get as far down the line as they could from Frank Smith during formal sparring in training sessions in LA... I am learning from your videos because I have always loved karate, but my school banned it for the girls, and when I transferred schools, it has no karate, and it will take my parents a while to be convinced that I need to go to separate classes for karate. I wish my school did karate classes, and I am desperate to convince my strict parents that karate is important. But while that is being settled, I will be watching this video and the rest of the playlist. Love your videos, you have inspired me.

Wow, I’m super happy my videos can help you during these tough times. It sounds like you’re doing a great job with training, most people from my experience do not have the drive you have to keep going. I’m sure if you kept it up you will be great one day! OSS! Jason 🙇🔥🥋

OMG. I was able to open that portal learning Kangku Dai. I could tell you things. That would be hard for you to believe. But they happen. And they still happen. Wow. I thought I was the only one who really understood the connection.

Yo, im so unlucky when it comes To Training Martial arts at Home.... I live in the highest flat, the Floor is loud as hell and I cant practice boxing, because it would be TOO loud.(Floor squeeking+Wall trembling) Alone the Taikyoku Shodan is VERY loud For the Floor:/ Is it possible To do Kata without kiai and loud stepping?
@SENSEIJASON Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can actually do it stationary from natural stance or horse stance. And if you want to do full stance just work on going slow and controlling your steps, don’t stomp on the ground, as your neighbors will be mad.
