Max Chandler-Mather talks negotiation on Labor's housing scheme and what the Greens will push for

House prices and rents are out of control and all Labor wants to do this year is introduce a scheme that will “help” 0.2% of renters buy a home, while making house prices more expensive for the 99.8%. House prices have already skyrocketed 28% in the last 3 years, forcing millions into housing stress or homelessness. That’s unacceptable.

I'm an upper income individual. I went to 4 townhouse inspections today, all of which my best offer was almost 40k too little. The same offer that would have got one of these properties just 3-4 months ago is now that far short. There is no saving a deposit fast enough when this is the rate it's going up by.

don't owner occupiers pay no tax when they sell? it is also adding to the huge amounts spent on upgrading to a new home. maybe a tax on amounts over a threshold should be applied to limit the amount home owners benefit from property growth.

conflict of interest? i saw an abc reporter accuse greens of this same thing but greens are voting to end negative gearing!!! if you own multiple homes and vote in your worst interest then its not a conflict of interest drrrrr

At least put capital gains consessions back to what they were before the 50% discount. Let people deduct the inflationary effect over the time they've owned it, not a flat 50%. The 50% discount makes no sense and has been catastrophic

I just praised Max but its so sad that the only party that appears to have a decent housing policy is intentionally ignoring the impacts of demand on housing from 30 years of mass immigrantion. The vast majority of immigrants are not propping up construction or nursing. They are the exploited uber, Deliveroo drivers, cleaners and low paid workers for the wealthy. They are Australia's version of the US Mexicans. Shame on you Max for not addressing this big issue.
