You like to say that fighters were just as capable to be great concerning skills at an earlier stage than they are when they actually do it. Justin actually evolved. He literally used to use his forehead as a defensive tactic. He didn't change what wasn't broken. He lost 2 in a row early in UFC and implemented change. Justin beating Poirier seems to be where everybody is doing their MMA math, and that's fine, because it makes sense. Here's what erases any doubt that Justin doesn't beat Max, the Fiziev fight. Justin went into that fight fully knowing he was being used as a spring board for the up and coming Fiziev. Fiziev's striking was being categorized in the best striking to ever exist in MMA. Not just the UFC. And with Justin being the stubborn bite the bullet and stand and bang until victory or defeat, nobody was expecting that fight to end with Justin getting his hand raised and Fiziev looking like a beat piece of meat, and showering Gaethje with praise and admiration. That coupled with the Dustin victory, added to everything we've ever seen out of Gaethje has my money on him. As far as reach is concerned, I still take Justin because of his ability to throw leg kicks inside clinch distance. I think that his leg chopping abilities put other fighters on the defense and that's perfect for him. That being said, Max ain't scared of standing and banging, so I can't wait for this fight. For me it's the best thing MMA has coming up.

It's interesting to hear that comment about how hard Gaethje punches. I'm not a striking expert by any means, but it seems like he throws his left hand off of his right foot, using his left foot to pivot by landing it just before the punch lands, generating extra force. And vice versa. This effect is like a steel ball bearing at the end of a bullwhip and makes him very mobile and able to get his hands to the target quickly. If you watch his fight with Dustin, you can see the difference. Dustin throws his left hand off his left foot, it's like a battering ram, but there's slightly more reaction time for the opponent.
