It's absolutely wild how Nickelodeon likely never cared much about this and were planning for it to be just another shovelware title with modest returns, but they accidentally threw their IP rights at a passionate dev who want to make a legitimate competitive game. Actually the devs said that they expected to have to dumb it down when approached to make it and surprisingly enough Nickelodeon was the one that gave them a surprising amount of creative freedom and specifically told them to make it competitive.

It’s hard to fly a bunch of voice actors living across the country to the studio to record lines in the middle of COVID lockdowns. Not that it’s not doable, but they are probably just cutting cost and decide to ship the game without voice acting all together.

The strafing mechanic makes it sound like the developers were big fans of Ryu and Ken in Smash, but despised their autoturn mechanic. Also Spongebob wavedashing and canceling his jumps with fast fall is terrifying.

Not just Ryu and Ken but the fact in general that some Smash characters have more attributes than others. The fact that in this game they went "all strongs can reflect" and "this strong against this strong causes dizzy" means they really want every character to have a chance at being good, rather than "oh Kazuya's kick can reflect because shut up."

Real Talk: I really, really respect the passion the developers have and the effort they are putting in. I just wish the game didn't look so cheap. To be clear, I do not believe this is the result of the devs, and is more about Nickelodeon not wanting to spend $100M on their version of Smash. I wish Nick put in a bit more budget to polish the graphics more, because everything else sounds just very cool.

Visuals are extremely cheap, music is the most basic I've heard in quite a while, sound effects are horrible. There's something to the gameplay for sure, but it's a shame that Nickelodeon clearly saw it as a cheap Smash clone to sell to the kiddies and not as a serious contender for the genre.

The main thing that gives me any hope for this game is that from the small tidbits I’ve seen from both the roster and their moves is that whoever’s heading the game seems to give a damn. @@youare5907 1) the game is likely not on a very large budget at all, seeing as it was entirely outsourced to a small but passionate developer and has a pretty small roster, and 2) they would have to contact a large number of voice talents from across the country to reprise all the roles from shows long out of production and some voices may even be retired or dead, or reuse poor quality clips from the shows/nick archives which they likely don't have access to anyways. Remember that Viacom is a very greedy company that often abuses copyright laws and moral standards, this is very likely a similar situation to Apex Legends's cosmetics where EA decides the prices and Respawn has no control over them

Its weird seeing a brand new liscened game that people are actually excited for and that the developers seem to be putting effort into, those are a rare breed nowadays.

I'd say they're more common now then they were at many other points of time. On average they're usually at least OK nowadays for many series, with things like the Samurai Jack game or Anime Fighters like MHA. Some that are great like a lot of the LEGO games, Mordor, and that upcoming TMNT game. And there's some that are genuinely critically acclaimed like DBFZ, Spiderman PS4, and (Sigh) Witcher 3. There's still a number of real phone ins like the other Nick games but nowdays the bigger problem seems to be high budget scams some major companies are releasing like Avengers or god forbid BattleFront 2 and 2077. There's a number of bad ones but the cheap cash ins have *mostly* moved to mobile and it's not actually a suprise to see a great one nowdays, they're not super common or anything but it seems to be an improvement from how things were earlier.

Catdog is brilliant because that character actually melds perfectly with the Strafe mechanic in this game. Both sides of the character are unique so you have to actually use the Strafe button very carefully depending on which side you need facing the opponent. So smart.

Small detail: SpongeBob's dizzy animation where it looks like he's absorbing water then shrinking is a "Pizza Delivery" reference! It was when the customer angrily told off SpongeBob about why he was getting pizza without a drink and SpongeBob keels over making this exact same animation, but he's crying, all while Squidward is trying to comfort him. Man, I can't wait to see all the other characters' unique animations and trying to guess the references!

I think the group making this game made Slap City which is one of the more appreciated and unique smash type games, and they know very well what kinda community this caters to with the wavedashing and stuff. Slap City seemed to have some pretty cool character mechanics too so they get creative. Good on them for getting to work on a game with established & known characters

The game is only featuring characters that are Nickelodeon ORIGINAL so shows such as Martin Mystery or Pelswick are out of the question Nicktoons such as... - Doug - Kablam - The Angry Beavers - Rocko's Modern Life - Action League NOW! - Rocket Power - Chalkzone - As Told By Ginger - The X's - Kappa Mikey - Catscratch - Back At The Barnyard - Fanboy & Chum Chum - Making Fiends - Penguins Of Madagascar - El Tigre - Pig Goat Banana Cricket - Robot and Monster - Sanjay and Craig - Purple and Brown And so on all of those shows and characters are Nickelodeon originals made for Nickelodeon and yes Nickelodeon still owns Doug they own their version of Doug and the original episodes of Doug that still air on Nickelodeon other channels.

@@cuteboy51 No, its been a trend in recent Nick licensed games. essentially, Nick just doesn't want to spend the money on getting the voices, which is really dumb. Its been a thing ever since Nick Kart Racers, and has even effected the Battle for Bikini Bottom remake. (THQ Nordic wasn't allowed to get Clancy Brown, etc.) Its pretty dumb.

Without the voices it makes me think there's a universal sound effects folder for all the characters, so it might take a really surgical coder to mod in character specific voices. If they do though I can see this being a heavy party game at events, with over the top sounds and better music.

This was my biggest worry, but there are at least some unique sound effects. Nigel having animal noises for attacks and things like April's camera noises or SpongeBob's bubble noises give hope that there will be at least a few opportunities. The big worry is not being able to add sound effects on getting hit per character since those are debatably the most important sounds to have voices for.

@Lydia No, it's best gameplay elements actually come from other fighting games, like normal block with things like pushback. Blocking low vs high vs mid to have less pushback, parries that work like Street Fighter, triangle jumping from Marvel Vs. Capcom. Even wave dashing works more like MVC rather than the way it works in Smash. Being able to reflect projectiles and even grab them on a base-mechanical level isn't from Smash at all.

This game is more mechanically sound than ultimate. If you were a FG player that was actually hyped for ult, you checked in on the most blanched engine in smash history. An absolute dearth of exploits and mechanics compared to all former iterations.

@@Zachary_Sweis I agree 100% but I have to be that guy and point out some things. Smash block has pushback and perfect guard acts to reduce it. Also, grabbing projectiles came from items in smash where they took being able to grab peach's turnips or link's bombs and gave it to everyone. Sidenote: I wish they could have made wavedashes more like smash since you were able to choose the length of you wavedash

You know, everyone keeps saying "The modders will mod in voices". Knowing the modding scene as well as I do, everyone who says that has no clue how modding works. How are you going to mod in a feature with nothing to go off of? This isn't a texture or model replacement, where you're replacing something that already exists. You're talking about ADDING a feature that DOESN'T exist. You have to make your OWN Voice engine for this. I mean, a year or so in? Maybe. Maybe. But you would have to have an external program launch along side of the game that reads the RAM Memory of the process. You then have to note what Character it is, and what state they're in, and what animation and what frame. You then have to play an audio file. The benefits of doing it that way would be it would be able to be used Online, as no modification to the game has been made. But that ISN'T easy.

Spongebob is the Mario; he's the all-arounder that everyone else deviates from in terms of power and such. He's the blank slate. Meanwhile, someone like Aang is probably the Link; the one whose series is generally regarded as better, and people LOVE it, but it's not gonna be the flagship.

I think that it’s worth noting that certain things are more popular in one place than another. If I recall correctly Spongebob is more consistently popular worldwide than Avatar is, just as Super Mario is more consistently popular worldwide than The Legend of Zelda. It’s just that because certain people live in environments in which something is more locally popular, sometimes they think that that something is more popular worldwide than it actually is.

tbf the other big problem with Infinite besides the graphics was the roster which can kill a crossover. Sure we got some cool choices like having an actual version of Mega Man back (I still remember my hype when X was the FIRST CHARACTER SHOWN), Jedah out of nowhere, Gamora, & Black Panther, but we also lost all the X-Men, kept reboot Spencer long after his game was just DEAD & not received well, & the DLC clearly originally planning for a 2nd wave with making the first wave be an uneven split of the 2 companies.

It gives me so much hope to see all these content creators get behind this game, it was already cool to see smash players like Tweek and Hbox already looking forward to it. I’ve been keeping track of this game real closely and it makes me happy to see how much you love the crazy stuff going on with the gameplay mechanics. That’s what’s been giving me the most hope for it too. Some of the stuff they showed in that video had been previously confirmed through the game’s official discord but not all of it. There’s also a few characters that have already been confirmed via official box art but just haven’t gotten full reveals yet. Aang and Korra from Avatar are in the game as well as Ren and Stimpy. The game is supposedly going to launch with a roster of 23 characters with more to be added as DLC down the road.

There’s clearly a lot of corner cutting going on, but it seems like they devoted most of their time to the actual mechanics and gameplay, and they seem like they’re really genuinely trying to make something fun. Hopefully they’ll be able to add in voices or better sounds and music later, or if this does well they could get a better budget for another game. But really this looks far better than what I would’ve pictured if I had just heard about the game.

I feel like they really didn't have very much money to make this, which is a damn shame. If nickelodeon gave them even a *little* bit more money, or sound clips from the show for voices, it would be way more sick. The sound design is easily the weakest aspect, but everything else looks super sick.

Something I kind of love about the gameplay too is that despite the budget, a lot of work was put into the animation to make it reference different moments in the show each character is from. Spongebob and Patrick are the best examples but i doubt they are the only ones.
