the rwby beach episode would be: - ruby and oscar splashing jaune - nora trying to smash a watermelon with magnhild while ren is buried up to his neck in sand next to said watermelon - weiss is floating on one of those bitch princess floating lounge pool chairs drinking some drink - blake obviously sitting on a towel, under an umbrella, reading a book - not sure what yang was doing beforehand but she would definitely be the one trying to get blake to swim with the others - somehow weiss gets splashed or capsized from her bitch princess floating lounge pool chair by ruby - laughter ensues

1:55:50 you have it confused here. The maiden powers were an idea Monty came up with after Volume 2 and wanted to add. The Relics were part of the plan since before volume 1 since each relic is in the logo for each academy. Shade Academy has a sword, Haven has a lamp, Beacon has a crown(the wreath around the axes), and Atlas has a staff. Also about the eyes, Kerry admitted that they shouldn't have given Mercury grey eyes but also clarified that true Silver Eyes have two little tick marks in them which started being in a thing in Volume 3.

It's always interesting to hear from fans who were actively part of the fandom back then. I've watched RWBY since the trailers but I never really was part of the fandom until after Vol4. So things like the relationship between Yang and Blake I took at face value that they were friends and partners. When I was watching vol 3, never once did I think the relationship between Blake and Yang was a romantic at all. I always took the team RWBY was like a sisterhood more than anything romantic.

The point of defending the tower is to protect the CCT. Destroying beacon tower eliminated the ability of kingdoms to communicate, leaving the In fear and suspicion just pointing the fingers at each other. Also Oz is actually less powerful than the maidens, he gave his powers away they're right. He said that in V5
@plarpy4 жыл бұрын
also you were correct with the tower being a communication thing. the reason they don’t want the tower to fall is because it keeps communication between the kingdoms and they need to make sure they can keep kingdoms in communication in times of turmoil. trouble in communication between kingdoms and like the rwby magic wifi stuff comes up in later volumes and ironwood plans to make the arena the new communications hub after the tower fell.

Honestly the more I hear about RWBY and its writing from this podcast, the more I get the impression that it's less like a tv show and more like an animated novel someone is publishing chapter by chapter as they write it over the course of seven years, and as a result they get good but they still started it like, seven years ago and so the first parts are just really clunky.
@shingshongshamalama4 жыл бұрын
Your assessment of Winter this volume is real interesting to me because personally, she kinda rubbed me the wrong way from the very beginning. The abrasiveness and the casual physical abuse, however comedic at first glance, strikes me as a bit too sincere. She gives me the distinct impression that she's not just bad at emotionally connecting with Weiss, she's actively _avoided_ doing so because she's internalized her own past domestic trauma in an unhealthy way. The more the show goes on and the more we see of her, the more that mildly overbearing big sister figure who just pushes Weiss to make her stronger starts looking like a young woman who can't escape what her father did to her and is pushing Weiss down the same unhealthy lifestyle she found herself on. I mean, she swapped an abusive father for a borderline-fascist daddy figure to whom she is unflinchingly loyal even if it means compromising her own ethics. Winter isn't a good person.
@amiablereaper4 жыл бұрын
I agreed with you up until that last sentence. Winter is *tragic*, and she sees and interacts with the world in a deeply fucked way, but I can't call her a bad person. She's not evil, she's just wrong. A big part of the end of v7 is her facade beginning to crack, trying to find a compromise in the irreconcilable. I think she will, in time, split from ironwood and try to do the right thing.

When I was watching Volume 3, my engagement with the show was low, and I was watching sporadic episodes during lunch breaks with my friend, who was forcing me through the show. I was happily along for the ride, and I think my enjoyment of the project purely came from the rare moments I got to spend with my friend and the reprieve from my busy school life. RWBY became synonymous with the few moments where I could catch a break, turn my brain off and enjoy the cringe dialogue and fantastic sakuga that came with the early volumes. Then the pandemic started. I was 3 episodes from the end of volume 3 when I was suddenly stuck at home, and while I hated (and still hate) being cramped in my house, I finally had room to breathe for the first time in what felt like months. And it was in those quiet moments of tentative peace, where I finally felt like I had room to catch my breath where I watched unequivocally the best part of RWBY I had seen so far. I explain that bit only so you can imagine how I felt when I say that got me immediately, thoroughly invested in the show, to the point where even when I became disheartened with 3 out of the 4 plots of Volume 4, I still held out hope for the series to get that good again. And with parts of Volume 6 and Volume 7, it did. When I watches the end of Volume 3, it felt like all the many, many loose ends of RWBY’s plot had been tied together into a cohesive whole, and for the first time since starting the show, it didn’t feel like a mindless excuse for good fight choreography, it felt like a story. A good story, one with the intrigue to not only keep me in my seat, but to teach me something, to make me think, contemplate the way I saw the world at large, the ways some of my personal favorite shows with similar tones to RWBY. Volume 3’s end genuinely shocked me, and I think that was because before that point I really just assumed the showrunners where only running with the “rule of cool” so to speak, just having fun with their creations and not really raising the stakes, so to have a true, well-implemented underlying plot felt so damn good. Penny’s death and the Yang/Mercury was when shit started to hit the fan, but the earlier hints in the previous fights that something was oh so slightly not right were done so well, and truly earned that “oh shit” moment from me when I finally realized that this cute adventure shonun rip-off sakuga romp was about to get… real. And the final battle was excellent, the battle animated excellently as usual, but the moment that really sold the show to me was Pyrrha’s death. So I’d predicted Pyrrha’s death earlier in the season when the maiden plot line was introduced. That, plus the blossoming romance between her and Jaune and the blatant foreshadowing in the intro made me convinced she was going to die. I said as much to my friend, who immediately reassured me time and time again. “Relax, no one dies in Volume 3.” My friend is a bold-faced liar. I would kill and die for her. But her constant blatant lying to my face actually helped in my enjoyment of the series. It helped lull me into that false sense of security, even if she did spoil 4 volumes early that Penny wasn’t dead as a way to further suspend my disbelief. I remember the battle between Cinder and Pyrrha, the moment where I was certain that Pyrrha had to die, but refusing to believe it, because “no one dies in Volume 3.” It took what probably would've been a slightly sad, but not too compelling death of a really likable side character into something that I really felt on an emotional level. (moral of the story? Watch tv with bold-faced liars who will break your trust while strengthening your friendship)

Grimm Eclipse actually IS canon. It takes place between Volumes 2 and 3. You play as Team RWBY in Story Mode (or JNPR if you bought the DLC) and the story is about them taking on a deranged scientist named Merlot who's been mutating Grimm. It's not important and definitely doesn't need to be known but it is in fact canon and is where the Lucus Naturae song originated. Also it's not that great of a game... Like... At all... It's very much a generic third person action adventure game where you fight Grimm mobs in levels with the occasional gimmick and that's it. Very low replayability. It does have a online multiplayer "Horde" mode but it's basically fighting Grimm waves and protecting bases which barely anyone plays 😅 And yes, in Volume 5, Ozpin did mention that he was much less powerful than he used to be after giving so much of his power to the maidens and then giving Qrow and Raven the ability to turn into birds. There's also the fact that while yes, Cinder just got the full power, she is already a skilled fighter and has been training with half the power for some time now so she has an alright grasp of it.

I may be the weird one here (mostly because I'm a Blacksun shipper and I have troubles talking about this). But with the scene about Adam and Yang, I feel that it wasn't meant to be a set up for any romantic implication whatsoever, but more of a way to showcase the insecurities and flaws of both Yang and Blake, with Yang jumping into the action without thinking, trying to be a hero and suffering the consequences of her rushed actions, and Blake being incapable of helping and getting the people she cares about involved with her past, that's why I think this scene wouldn't work at all if it was Sun the one who defended Blake. I don't have any problems with people shipping Blake and Yang, but I feel a lot of shipper see this scene more as Yang coming over to protect her girlfriend and that the creators made this scene with that intention in mind, instead of more indeep moment for both of these characters. Great podcast btw, I already looking forward fot the next one :D

@TheThunderbirdRising4 жыл бұрын
If I can be a spoilsport for a while, all the discourse around *that* scene with Yang and Adam is a clear example of shipping clouding basic media analysis. Adam says "I'll destroy everything you love." He says this surrounded by Beacon burning down, and students are dying and Grimm are overrunning everything. Then Yang shows up and he says "starting with her." The clear textual reading of the scene is that Yang is part of the "everything" that Blake loves about her life. It's not like Adam says "I'm going to kill the one person you love...her." And its definitely not like Adam is implying Blake is in romantic love with the concept of Beacon or her life right now. The "everything" is the most important part of the line, because it puts Yang in the same category as every other thing Blake likes about her life right now, and not in any specific romantic way. Especially with the vol 4&5 knowledge that Adam was definitely implying that he was going to go after Menagerie and her parents as well. But, you know, people who are already inclined to ship the two of them hear the word "love" in the same sentence as them and any larger context of the scene goes out the window. I shall now await my crucifixion.
@pixelwishes52114 жыл бұрын
Nah people shouldn’t crucify you. I was pretty convinced that Bumbleby was platonic up until that scene. As a writer that’s just how I would write a scene if I was setting up a narrative with romantic coding. So that’s probably why I view it that way personally. But I’m always interested in reading other peoples takes so thank you for your thoughts!
@cobaltmnemosyne37574 жыл бұрын
My only issue with that is that the emphasis is still put on Yang as an emblem of everything Blake loves. Even if it isn’t romantic, it still establishes the foil relationship between Yang and Adam. It takes the relationship between Blake and Yang and makes them central to each other’s stories. The writers specifically chose to have Yang as the person who gets hurt over everyone else because it would impact Blake the most, because she best serves as this symbol of Blake’s new life. The wording isn’t directly “they are in love”, but the scene as a whole establishes these characters as inexorably linked and highly important to each other. I mean you’re right that it’s not outright romantic, but you’re disregarding that there’s more going on that creates a very interesting dynamic that people would find shippable.
@TheThunderbirdRising4 жыл бұрын
@@cobaltmnemosyne3757 Yeah, I totally agree. Blake and Yang clearly have the strongest connection of team RWBY up to and including that scene, and it makes sense that the two of them would be used together with Adam. And if it proves one thing, it's that Blake does love Yang, its just whether in a platonic or romantic sense was yet to be established. But it's when people point to that scene and go "Blake and Yang are clearly in love and super gay and Bumblebee is canon" that I have to take issue. It's very clearly letting preconceived notions of what their relationship is like cloud what is actually being said in the scene. Also I just have a general problem with shippers ignoring the concept of close friendships possibly existing. Like "really good friends wouldn't possibly support each other and show affection and put themselves in danger for each other. The only option is that they are in *love*" It just ends up being really limiting in what stories and character dynamics can be shown, if everyone assumes that any close relationship is automatically romantic
@TheThunderbirdRising4 жыл бұрын
@@pixelwishes5211 Honestly the way I've always viewed Bumblebee as a ship is that their relationship is 100% platonic for the first three volumes, and then once they were separated during 4&5 that they realised how much they really cared about each other. So it doesn't really start being romantic until the end of volume 6 and volume 7. (And I've shipped BB from the start of the show)
@MrRemicas4 жыл бұрын
@@cobaltmnemosyne3757 It's also because with Yang losing an arm she can't accompany Ruby to Mistral, making the whole team separated. Though personally I didn't take Yang's feeling for Blake as romantic until V5 when she framed her issue with her more for not being there than for having left. Blake on her end doesn't show anything until her blushes in V7.

I would say that the show got worse after monty was gone. I think it's slowly improved since then, but I don't think him being there would have stopped M&K from learning how to write something. If monty had stayed maybe the fights we get would be anywhere near as good as the ones we used to get. The two biggest animation leads left the action show. I'm glad that the writing has improved somewhat, but visually the show has pretty seriously suffered in many respects. And that's why I'm there. I like good writing in action shows, but a show with terrible writing and fabulous fights is much better in my book than a show with mediocre writing and mediocre fights.
@cobaltmnemosyne37574 жыл бұрын
Listen, volumes 4 and 5 are rough. The fight choreography drops drastically in quality, and the writing doesn’t live up to the hype of V3. There are some interesting moments and ideas, but the show really does suffer for a while. Volumes 6 and 7 are starting an upwards trend though.
