It's used to get temperature into the tyres on warm-up laps but he fat-fingered it while upshifting in the start.

Going for the overtake was a safe call and he probably would have won if he didn't mess his brake balance up. And actually, braking behind Checo and locking up would cause a crash and a massive pile up, so Checo got lucky there, could have been race over for him if he was faster off the line.
