I beat her in a talent quest once …. Not because I was better; simply because our small town wasn’t ready for someone like Max. She was sending a message that they couldn’t understand…. “These boots were made for walking “ - I was just 12 yo but I got it…. They should have too. To me, that might, she won. I will always love and support her. She’s a musical genius!!’ Love you babe! Xxx

It's funny, when this song first came out it sort of blended into the background of 90s pop for me. I thought it was okay, but I was too young and didn't really pay attention to lyrics at the time. Decades later I went to a Cyndi Lauper concert and Max Sharam was the supporting act. She was really amazing and she did an acoustic version of Coma (which I now realise is closer to what it started out as). She was really darkly witty, intelligent and fun and I feel bad that I ever though she was just some generic pop star at the time, but in my defense the production on this song made it sound a lot more generic than the song really is at heart. So I came for Lauper but left with a true appreciation of Max Sharam and found a whole bunch of her stuff on youtube including her stints on New Faces. Just as an aside Australia seems to have a real tradition of pop stars with Operatic vocal training/skills: Kate Miller-Heidke, Katie Noonan and Max Sharam. It should be a genre: Popera! (or maybe it is).

l read a comment somewhere where it described this as 'Nostalgia that is dangerously close to becoming melancholy' and l couldn't agree more. This chick is from Benalla, Victoria and when Triple J wasn't thrashing this on the radio, l had it on CD. l luved this song so much because it was left of centre from everything in the 90's that was either Grunge or Rave. ln truth, l always thought she was Australia's version of Kate Bush ; extremely talented artist, underated, quirky, sexy and voted most likely to murder you in your sleep.
