Max Webster wrote "Battle Scar" in 1973. It was one of the very first songs they created. They played it in the bars for a couple of years, then ditched the song until 1980 when they brought it back and started playing it again. Rush had always liked the song, and said that if Max Webster were to ever record "Battle Scar," they would be happy to play it with them. The two bands collaborated, stuffing all four members of Max Webster and the three members of Rush into a studio. They finished the song in two takes. Geddy Lee and Dave Myles of Max Webster both played bass, with Geddy of course doing the vocals with Kim Mitchell, who does the guitar solo with Alex Lifeson. If you listen closely to those guitar solos that you loved, there are two guitars going at once. They switch back and forth between lead and more of a rhythm/backing sound. Kim Mitchell is an amazing and very underrated guitarist. Two drum kits were placed in the studio for Neil Peart and Gary McCracken. Having two drummers makes the song so full and loud. There was also a little bit of keyboards on the song played by Terry Watkinson, who was a vital part of every Max Webster album except for "Universal Juveniles." This was the only song he played on. Max Webster is an amazing band. "Battle Scar" is definitely one of their heaviest songs. I suggest you try one of their 'Moon' songs next. "Coming Off The Moon," "In Context Of The Moon," and "Beyond The Moon."

I have never heard this song or of this band. I like it...A LOT. The music was SPECTACULAR. As far as the vocals go, I don't think I would have liked it as much without the Geddy collaboration. Even though it was unusual, I liked the contrast. But the music was the star. I could listen to that all day long.

All 7 of them in the studio together, double everything, and the Lead guitar was Kim Mitchell's with Liefson playing off of him. McCracken shared all the drum runs etc with Neil, as McCraken was world class as well and they pushed each other throughout the song etc. When they did this live together the song would go 14+ minutes at times and would get more and more hectic as they challenged each other, it was glorious and we got to see it multiple times a year as they toured together dozens of times a year or more.

Dudes you guys are one of the only to react to this song that I've come across. I've seen Max Webster twice and Kim Mitchell 5 times and have personally met him 3 times he used to frequent the town I grew up in. I grew up in a town outside Toronto and the members of Rush lived in the next town and we were playing in the park and heard music coming from the factories and we climbed on the dumpsters to watch in the window and saw them rocking out making the most impressive sounds we had ever heard. They saw us and came out and we talked about hockey ( cause that's what we Canadians do 😂) we talked about the music they were making and their cars they had beautiful cars and when we were done Geddy and Alex gave us guitar picks and Neil gave us drumsticks they were so down to earth and humble. I was lucky enough to see them live in 88 and 03 in front of 500,000 crazy Canadians at the SARS relief concert it was Epic to say the least. So I've met all these iconic guys ❤ Diamonds Diamonds ,let go of the line two bangers by Max Webster. Great reaction. Peace out ✌️ ☮️

Holy Moley! You guys did it!!! These guys are like Rush in that, if you have ever heard them, you love them. They are one of the most beloved bands in Canada, despite never making it in the USA. They had a hit in the UK with "Paradise Skies." Please stick with these guys. They made absolutely amazing, unpredictable stuff. Next to try could be - "High Class In Borrowed Shoes," "Diamonds, Diamonds," "America's Veins," "Toronto Tontos," "Lily," "Astonish Me," "Beyond The Moon," "The Party," "Let Go The Line," "In The World Of Giants," Drive and Desire," etc. etc. etc.

This song sounds 'primal' because the subject matter is the treatment of aboriginal peoples in North America by white men. There are references to being in jail, trying to fight back, 'understand the white man's fears', etc. Not really typical for either Rush or Max Webster, but a great collaboration.,

I remember that they would only play this after midnight here in the area I'm from. I was a kid and I stayed up late and would call Max, the DJ that worked the late shift, and request it all the time. This was underground here, at least in my area of the Country. It made me a hard rock fan for the rest of my life! Geez, I waited years and years before I really heard anything like it again...maybe until Pantera! There were groups that rocked like Aerosmith and their Rocks Album but just the power behind the whole song I never really felt again until the first time I heard Pantera. Who wouldn't love Kim Mitchell and Rush kicking ass like this?

You missed it a we bit. All 7 members of both groups had all of their equipment in the studio, double drums, double bass etc etc. They played off each other. The drumming was not just Peart, he and McCracken just went off challenging each other with runs etc., as did the bass's and the guitarist was dueling Kim Mitchell and Liefson. We got to see this live dozens of times a year, as they toured together all the time, big venues and small and all 7 would come together to do Battle Scar. The guitar that came in was first Kim Mitchell and then Liefson played off him. Live they would stretch this out into 10 plus minutes...

Thanks for spilling out all these details. (I was about to try, myself!)! This is important to understand! [and, just, the "dual band" format of this song... Not having all the parts "written out," but being together, in the same room, at the same time and improvising on each-others' playing!! Listening! and responding (which is what musicians, really., DO!)! 🤘🤘]

Finally!! I have been pleading with you guys and numerous other music reaction channels for more than a year to give Max Webster a chance. Truly, thank you. Now let the floodgates open and wash everyone down the rabbit hole that is Max Webster. Next up should be High Class In Borrowed Shoes followed by The Party, Hangover, Paradise Skies, A Million Vacations, Diamond/Diamonds, Let Go The Line, Oh War!, On the Road etc. Then you can find out about the brilliance of solo Kim Mitchell - Go For Soda (massive U.S. hit), Patio Lanterns, Lager and Ale etc. Knowing the catalogue of both bands, I can say this is absolutely more a Max Webster song tonally than a Rush tune. I love the juxtaposition of Geddy and Kim's voices. I love their individual tones and harmonies as such. They are iconic voices in Canadian rock. Geddy definitely went over the top with his screech on this one; it is not typical of him. I'm sorry you don't like that aspect but what would be the point of putting together two voices that are similar? You should want that difference. Do you like Simon and Garfunkel or the collaboration between U2 and BB King (When Loves Comes To Town). They work so well because the two competing lead voices are not alike at all, each bringing something unique tonally. BTW, nice stank faces guys. P.S. I am Canadian born and have lived there my entire life. I'm 61 and grew up with the titans of Canadian rock/pop music - Rush, Max Webster, BTO, The Guess Who, Triumph, Prism, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young, Loverboy etc. If you do a tribute to Canada week or month I'd be honoured to put together a series of Canadiana rock and pop tunes for me. Just let me know.

Kim is one of my personal favorite guitarists of all time (and, yes! I mean: EVER!) and utterly underrated! ...but he HAS gotten "his props" from within the musician/player community (over the years). One I tend to bring up (because the person offering his accolades is relatively well-respected, although, not well-known to the "general listener"🤷) is that of: Paul Gilbert. I have no idea whether you know who Paul Gilbert is, but he was a breakout from the mid-late '80s, "post-Edward Van Halen," G.I.T. & thrash-metal "scene." Gilbert is a highly-respected, virtuosic guitarist. He started the band Racer X and in the tail of the 1980s (into the early '90s), he was part of: Mr. Big (along with Billy Sheehan, vocalist Eric Martin and drummer Pat Torpey) ...so listeners of THAT time-period, at least, should have a cursory familiarity with Mr. Gilbert. ...anyway ("point being"🙄): Paul Gilbert has stated Kim Mitchell as a, personal, influence! and noted his vast variety and superb skill (in guitar playing). 💜💜🔥🤘🤘 Paul Gilbert ain't no slouch. (I've, also, heard the GREAT: Warren DeMartini [RATT] mention Kim Mitchell (among other players and plaudits).👍👍🤘🤘).

Max Webster had quite a few good songs. A couple I would suggest would be "Diamonds, Diamonds", "A Million Vacations", "Toronto Tontos", "High Class in Borrowed Shoes". Although they never did well outside of Canada they had success here especially in Southern Ontario. The lead singer Kim Mitchell did have a modicum of success in the mid 80's in the US with his album Akimbo Alogo which featured some really big hits here including "Go For A Soda" and "Patio Lanterns" which was constantly played on the radio.

Mitchell absolutely shreds the guitar solo in this song, which is one of the band's straight out of the gate rock songs. Then, Barenaked Ladies returned the favor by collaborating nearly 15 years later on Mitchell's re-recorded, re-relased version of the Max Webster song "Diamonds, Diamonds." So as many of the posters have already mentioned, Max Webster may not have had wide mainstream success in America, but their Canadian contemporaries (like Rush) and later stars (like Barenaked Ladies) clearly had great affinity for Max Webster as a band and Kim Mitchell as a writer, singer, and guitarist.

MAX WEBSTER RULES! 🤘🤘 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 -Pretty much "everyone" (who, ever, listens to this band, seemingly-from OUTSIDE of Canada, I mean!) ends-up starting with/only doing THIS, particular song (because it's a literal "band duet" with: RUSH and even Max Webster's keyboardist -who had LEFT the band by this point!!- came BACK to play on it with everyone!). 🤦🤦🙄(which is MORE than 'a bit' annoying -in all truth!-...BUT....) ...but MAX WEBSTER have a MESSLOAD of better, stronger, stranger, killer songs in their catalogue! 🔥🔥🤘🤘 ...From planet-scorching rock annihilators to cradle-sweet, emotionally resonant and powerful (even when somehow, somewhat "obscure") love songs, "ballads" and tributes! This band had and DID "EVERYTHING!" In the '70s and early '80s they were a stalwart (and pretty "legendary" in their own right) in Canada, ...they were regular touring partners with RUSH; and their [Max's] dedicated lyricist [Max Webster had a full complement of band members who were song-writers, but the primary (those who got the most material on the albums, in-the-end) were: Mitchell/Dubois [Guitarist Kim Mitchell; and dedicated lyricist/song-writing partner: Pye Dubois. (Dubois was not "per se" "an official band member" ...but in all of the ways that can be "noticed"/"designated, /"calculated," he was "the 5th Beatle" or (contextually): "the 5th Webster," in this case!😛)-) and Terry Watkinson (the keyboardist).], Pye Dubois co-wrote the lyrics/what the song was created from and inspired the Rush song: "Tom Sawyer" Yep! (He, also, co-wrote (and appears on) "Between Sun & Moon"....) Pye Dubois of the Mitchell/Dubois team, was a friend and compatriot of Neil Peart's and in fact, was one of the extremely few co-writers whom Neil ever had, on the lyrical front (perhaps the ONLY one -I might be "misremembering" things here 🤔🤔🤷). The entire Max Webster band were. ALL. top echelon musicians/players. Paul Gilbert (shredder god extraordinaire), even, cites Kim Mitchell's playing being an influence on his playing and style! Gary McCracken [the long-standing drummer -although Paul Keresy preceded him, on Max Webster's debut album (and he is no slouch, either!)] is, easily, in the class of Neil Peart or most jazz-fusion drummers you might want to name. He didn't get to "showcase" his chops in such obvious fashion, in Max Webster ...but: if you are a listener, you will hear them and notice his skill. Terry Watkinson is a spectacular and deft key. player; as well as being am excellent song-writer (He -or his material which Max Webster ended-up recording, at least!- tends to fall, mainly/largely, into the relatively wide parameters of: " '70s rock/pop-rock radio" style stuff and highly melodic, "lighter" SOUNDING (although, not always "lightly themed!") st music!). Dave Myles is an ultra-superb bass player and was around for about 2/3 of Max's career. He and Gary McCracken are one of the tightest, most deft rock rhythm sections you will EVER hear! ...Myles' predecessor: Mike Tilka: I always enjoyed his playing, but the common agreement appears to be that: he wasn't "quite as good" as Dave Myles was. Tilk, later, moved on to be a well-regarded Producer, in Canada (for Max Webster's label: Anthem ...and, later, others, as well) and nothing with him on it sucks! MAX WEBSTER *DESERVES* MUCH wider and more voluminous attention and notice!🤘🤘

Nope, they played this Live together all on stage many times a year as they played together all the time, or even at a Max concert, or the odd time even at a big Rush concert locally, they would all get together and play this one. 2 drum kits, 2 bass's 2 guitarist's with Kim's being the Lead Guitar and Liefson the rhythm.

@@ViewsFromThe502 It was Webster's Guitarist ripping it up, AND Webster's drummer ripping those early runs. McCracken and Peart were equals on the drums but Webster's style never let him loose like Peart's. All members of Rush, except the Vocals, were playing off the Webster instrumentation. Liefson was the rhythm guitar to Kim's lead , and Neil ran his runs back to McCracken. The bassists were also playing off each other, trading riffs Us Locals understand how good instrumentalists Max guys were, and we get why others thought it was the Rush guys taking over totally in the 2nd half of the song. We saw them do this live many times a year as they hung out on stage all the time in our area, and just imagine a 14 minute version where all the instrumentalists let loose back and forth.
