Story has it that Max Weinberg first met Conan on the streets of New York, outside Carnegie Deli. Conan hadn't even begun his TV show yet, but offered Max Weinberg an audition. Max assembled The Max Weinberg 7, and the rest is history. It's kind of amazing how that band just gelled with the show and each other, and guys like Max, La Bamba and Pender became larger-than-life characters, expanding beyond being musicians.

My favorite bit with Max was back when they were on NBC and Max was the leader of the Conan band. Conan came out one night to his intro music, and he looks over at Max and says, "Wait. Why are you playing "Dude Looks Like a Lady?"" Max just looks at him and shrugs

I know I'm a year late but it was widely believed that Joel had either retired or simply didn't want to move to Los Angeles. However more recently, Joel has said that he was not invited to join the Tonight Show as apparently NBC would not pay for both Joel and Andy. It seems Conan had to pick between Joel and Andy, with Conan picking Andy.
