@@MaxAfterburner Hello Max afterburner, They said F 111 and F14 were a joint venture of Grumman and General Dynamics and the original design was based on F14 mock up model . Then two companies went their own way but the variable geometry wings ,tail wings ,engine power plant should be the same (interchange parts). I am going do it with Hasagawa 1/72 tomcat F 14 and F111 Aardvark and inter change the common parts.

The model looks fantastic, we Australians still have a soft spot for our old F-111's. I live in a regional area of Australia and still clearly remember a beautiful sunny day in the 1970's when I was in the schoolyard and a pair of these beauties flew overhead at awesome speed. I remember my introduction to the F-111 was via a RAAF 50th anniversary poster when I was a kid. The F-111 was the pride of the fleet back then and remained a favourite with Aussies for decades. I’m sure we all felt a little bit safer with the Pig in our arsenal. I went on to be stationed in air-defence with the army so we exercised with F-111’s quite often. Seeing them in action has been a fond memory my entire life. A great video and build mate. I particularly liked the use of the templates. As others have said. Thank you for showing respect for the crew. For the aircraft, and for our country.

Another beautiful build. I remember seeing these Aircraft when I was much younger at Airshows in Oz. F-111 & Dassault Mirage were the aircraft of the day. But it was the F-111 that were always making headlines for all the wrong reasons. I think 7, F-111 crashed killing 10 aircrew. Sometimes the fancy escape module saved the pilots. An aircraft well ahead of its time in design but also a very complicated aircraft to keep flying. Lots of issues with the avionics which had many of these aircraft stuck on the ground waiting repair. Lucky when they were in service they were never needed to defend the country.

The RAAF sometimes flew the F-111s over the mine where I worked in Central Queensland. They used the flat terrain and the spoil heaps of the open cut mine to test their ground-following radar systems. There were some great shots of the mine taken from the onboard cameras. Every year for many years they did a dump and burn display at night for the Riverfire Festival in Brisbane.

@@MaxAfterburner I learned that the Navy tried to use the F-111 but it couldn't land on carriers after several attempts so they contracted Grumman to develop the F-14 Tomcat. I always liked the swept wing design of both aircraft. I wish there was a 5th generation Stealth version.

Years ago I worked for Grumman Aerospace modifying F-111's into EF-111's. It was a slick looking plane but it was a true nightmare to work on. When the last EF-111 took off from the factory it proceeded to have a main gear tire blow out ( the U.S.Air Force was told to replace it the day before, but did not want to spend the money for a new tire ). It proceeded to slide into the woods at the runways end. The crew was fine but the plane was "bent". No great loss to the workers. Love your build video, great format !

G'day, I was in the RAAF when our F-111s finally arrived. We had to lease F4 Phantoms for nearly a year until the 'Pigs' turned up. There was great controversy down here over the cost of each F-111. It was nearly four times more than any aircraft we'd purchased up to that point. Fantastic to see them at air shows down here. I used to work at our air shows 'herding' the crowds around and keeping them away from getting too close to the aircraft. I remember doing the first available F-111 kit down here. They were a 'hot' aircraft. Happily, they spent all their time in the RAAF without firing a shot in anger. Our pilots really liked them. The ground crews not so much. A lot of them got sick after having to get into the fuel tanks to do vital repairs. It's wasn't a good outcome. Cheers, Bill H.

A great tribute to a great aircraft - thank you from an Aussie. I loved the stats you gave - concise and accurate. The model as finished is quite "dirty" for an empty crew space...they would have closed her up a lot more before leaving, maybe even tucked the wings. Thats in the interest of showing what she looked like on rollout - which is great. I saw this jet in airshow mode and will never forget her. I was driving a bus to the Sydney Olympics on the opening night in 2000 across the M4 overpass at Granville when one did a dump and burn over the arena. I thought the aliens had landed! I could feel the thunder through the steering wheel.

Beautiful job. I used to be a crew chief on A/C 0382 at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho for 6 years. I loved that plane. I won crew chief of the month twice and got to fly in my own plane. I noticed that you painted the speed brake black and red in squares. The F 111 I crewed and worked on, the cut out where the main wheels retract to, that indention was black while the rest of the speed brake was red. One thing about that speed brake. Those indentions where the most comfortable to lay on for your back. I wqas engine run qualified and also taxi qualified. What a great pane the F 111 is.
@MaxAfterburner2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, I was using some reference photos for a few of the F-111s where they painted what looks like a red cross pattern and the central "bar" would travel through those indentations on the inner surface of the speedbrake. The F-111 sure was a large aircraft and probably a lot of work for you guys to maintain. Thanks for your service and for sharing your background with it! 😇

Just a small note, When the RAAF retired the f111's, the super hornets took over initially as a stop gap for the strike capability, but are now a more permanent solution along with growlers. Primary air defense remained with the F/A18 A/B's until their retirement in 2021, and is now done by the f35. F111's had an initially rocky introduction, with cost overruns and several losses mostly due to mechanical failure in vietnam. Once these were sorted it was such a capable aircraft the soviets made sure they were included in talks since they were stationed in europe. The f111's also served extremely well in the gulf war, where they destroyed more thanks than any other aircraft, along with fantastic strategic bombing on factories, airfields and other high value targets. If you look on youtube there are many 'gun cam' vids of f111's guiding LGB's through buildings, hangers etc.

Outstanding build, Max - well done 👍 - I hope mine turns out half as good 😅 More on that in a moment... My fond memory of the F-111 was from the 70's - 80's. I lived near a large valley near Lismore (NSW) ... as a little bloke, I could hear them coming, usually at night, flying by terrain radar I would assume. Going straight over our house at about 200 feet I'd guess. All you would see was the two big burners disappear down into the valley on their way back to Amberley. Just awesome. I recently visited Evans Head Aviation Museum, which is located far north coast of NSW Australia. They have a F-111C on display - A8-147. Tim was an excellent guide. Anyhoos - they're struggling a bit financially, so to support them a little, the the family bought me a model kit - same as the one here - 1st one I've done since I was about 10 😉 Anyway - I'm starting to do my research for my build, A8-147 & the one in Darwin I saw (A8-113) have gloss black nose cones, not matt - Can someone in the know confirm that for me ? Thanks in advance & happy model building 👍 ...
@MaxAfterburner9 ай бұрын
Hi TheQuinny67, so glad you enjoyed the build video and that you have many great memories of the RAAF F-111Cs during their active times. While A8-147 and A8-113 have glossy nose radomes now, they indeed have been highlighted like this from their original matte standard. Many aircraft museums paint their aircraft exhibits in a gloss finish to include the fuselage sometimes even though most active military aircraft serve with a flat paint coat. In fact, a retired F-111E near me is super shiny like a sports car in a dealer's showroom! Best Wishes on your build! 😀

Thanks for this and I am certainly going to use this to help me build the one I just ordered - though I hope I can come close to 50% of the quality of what you had done. I am wanting mine to serve as a memory of A8-128 which crashed near Tenterfield in 1987. Pilot was part of a family that my family was close to.

When I was in the U.S.Army back in 1982 while in Germany stationed at L.Clay Concern, I was standing outside of my motor pool building. I just so happened to look up at the gray over cast sky and saw a black dot off in the distance. Within seconds that black dot grew in size and flew over head about 200”, and in that brief glimpse I recognized it as a F-111. As it started to recede I was hit with a thunderous boom. The sight of this enormous jet going supersonic with full afterburners glowing a bright orange was one the coolest aviation experience of my life. This jet shook the whole base with everyone running out of the motor repair shop thinking that we just got nuked by the Ruskies.

Hi Ray, thanks! After overall poor viewership for the channel in 2020, this F-111C video may beat every one of them in another week or two.

Nice build Max! What's coming next? I remember an F-35 was an option a little while ago. I'd love to see a Zvezda Felon build, or even an F-117. I love the content of the video with the Aussie music adding to the excitement of the build. Keep up the great work!
@MaxAfterburner3 жыл бұрын
Hi Drew M, thanks! This F-111C surpassed every model I built in 2020 in terms of number of views -- and it did so in only 16.5 days. I have a model project in mind, but I may also have a viewer's choice election instead. I haven't decided yet. Also, I have three other videos in various stages of production, but I'm sure they won't do as well as the model project build videos. These will be released on Rumble first as each one is completed.

terrific kit and build much respect to Aussies flying it. If I recall correctly, the C was supposed to go to US Navy but it was too heavy for carrier operations and they passed on it and y'all picked it up. I remember the fuel dump and afterburner ignition during the Olympics. it was nicknamed whispering death in Vietnam, it has a whooshing suction sound just before it blast past you then a heck of a loud engine. there was no radome pitot probe? I was in USAF and worked on F-111E and F-111F (then moved to F-16s) as an avionics tech. it was truly an amazing aircraft which could do a job most other aircraft could not: day/night, all weather, low level and high speed deep penetration bombing. also, I was at RAF Lakenheath in 548th TFS for Eldorado Canyon and knew the two who were lost. thank you for mentioning them
@MaxAfterburner3 жыл бұрын
Hi bobc4d, glad you enjoyed the video and the information provided within. There is a pitot tube on the nose, it might be hard to see in the model images, but it's there. Believe it or not, I was also an F-16 avionics tech and I'm working on a project about that as one of my upcoming videos. Thanks for the stories and your service, sir!

Love the Pig and your build of it (especially the three colour camo - it’s a very distinctive look for the RAAF planes). I got to see the RAAF bring them over here (NZ) a few times for air shows and exercises. I was working in Aussie when they had their last flights but they didn’t make it to Moree unfortunately.

Top work as always. Was a sad day watching the stripped out fuselages being buried near an industrial area due to build up of asbestos and therefore could not be scrapped in the traditional methods.

What you say makes sense - although I thought it was because they had the ability to carry nuclear weapons and had to be seen to be destroyed because of some treaty agreement. Of course we never used them in that way. A great pity and a real shameful ending because of petty bureaucracy.
@tinmansscalemodels3 жыл бұрын
Asbestos can be removed. What was the major issue is the chemical used to seal the fuel tanks. In fact the major reason they were decommissioned was the legal action against the RAAF by the service personnel that had health issues due to the chemical
