My son is in AF. Learned to fly in civil air patrol and held several leadership roles in ROTC. Earned a slot for pilot training. Took his AF physical just before college graduation and did not pass color blind test. Vision was good, just did not pass a few of the color slides. That ended the pilot path. No waiver was granted. He moved into maintainer, air advisor, and now instructor. I recommend getting a color blind test early if you want to be a pilot.

I would add 4: believe in your self. That said, it also means honestly evaluating your abilities, to learn where you need to work harder, and never let your "ego' exceed your abilities. From a guy whose callsign was "Mother" because I was told I worried about everyone but myself.

My son has been offered by the USAF Academy via football...this video is great to help him better understand the process. He has always loved military aviation (we fly DCS together a lot). He's weighing all his options, but the opportunity to go to Colorado Springs through football and possibly represent his country as an aviator is definitely at the top of the list. Thanks for this video!

Military is the only profession where first one has to make it a career & eventually it becomes a way of life. Its hard work, alot of dedication & one unique approach for joining the military I personally feel is the determination at a very early stage in life. That is the best way to get prepared for it mentally & physically. Loved this video & looking forward to the series. ❤

When I was in Highschool back in the mid 80s my dream was to become a fighter pilot, but in my senior year I talked to an Air Force recruiter that told me I could not become a military pilot with corrected vision. So was this true back in the mid 80s? Has the requirement been changed since then from natural perfect vision to corrected vision? Just curious.
@D3mon_gigglz2 жыл бұрын
I was an F-16 Crew Chief when I started out in the USAF. I wear glasses, and after talking to my Squadron Commander about my career goals, he sent me to the squadron flight doc to ask that very question. As far as in the early 2000's, you could have corrected vision (glasses) and still be a fighter pilot. Obviously, if they were the thickness of coke bottles...probably not, but he told me over half the pilots in my unit wore glasses. Laser eye surgery was still a relatively new process and there were some types of procedures that, at that time, would have been an automatic disqualification (I don't remember which). Either way, it is still very likely to still be a pilot with corrected vision. With the help of my Squadron Commander and Maintenance Officer, we set out a path to get my college finished and hopefully get me on the path to becoming a pilot. Half-way through finishing my degree, I was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes (Type-1)... There was nothing I could do to fix that. My AF career aspirations were over just like that. I was set to get an incentive flight in one of our Squadron's jets at Red Flag in Las Vegas, which would have been the closest thing I would have gotten to flying an F-16 (aside from trim pad engine runs after replacing an engine), but every jet broke so dang hard that month, our 2 D-models became hardline flyers. NOBODY got incentive rides that TDY. *sigh*

I’m 21 with no degree. Do I still have a chance? I’ve been thinking about this for the past 3 years and have always been wanting to jump in but have heard some things about recruiters trying to just fill positions to make their quota. I’m just a little lost on how things all start and where to get a good foot in the door. I also have no military family so any experiences and suggestions help!

I remember in the early eighties (before top gun) while in college, military recruiters (Navy) were at the college job fairs pushing not just OCS but they trying to entice you with AOCS. I was a criminal justice major at the time and really thought about it. I believe it was a six-year commitment at the time. The only reason AOCS sounded enticing is because of watching WW2 movies about flying and especially after constantly watching TV sign off High Flight (T38) in the early 70's kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6XJfJ2rl619bcU. Even though I had a fun career in law enforcement, I regret not joining. The reason is because when 911 occurred, all the officers that were in the reserves got called up to serve, which I also wanted to do. I realized later that I could have had a law enforcement career while being a reserve after I did my six years if I didn't make the military my career. Whether I could have qualified to become a fighter pilot or any other type of pilot in the Navy is a different story, but not being able to serve the country after 911 was my only regret. Videos like this are really helpful for the younger generation to show you have multiple options in your life.
